LA CICOGNA BIANCA CICONIA CICONIA (Aves Ciconiidae) IN SICILIA: AGGIORNAMENTO A TRENT’ANNI DALLA COLONIZZAZIONE
Il presente lavoro sintetizza le conoscenze sulla Cicogna bianca nidificante in Sicilia negli ultimi
29 anni, dal 1991 (anno della prima nidificazione) al 2020. Per la raccolta dei dati sono state seguite le linee guida dell’International White Stork Census. Vengono presentate una cartina di distribuzione che illustra l’areale della specie attraverso un confronto temporale e alcune tabelle relative
all’andamento annuale delle coppie nidificanti in Sicilia (sia HPa che HPm), al numero dei pulli
involati e alla media (±SD) per nido. Dopo una crescita della popolazione nidificante, da una coppia fino a un massimo di 82 nel 2013, si è avuto un leggero calo e il numero di nidi si è stabilizzato
sulla media di 68 coppie nell’ultimo triennio. Vengono elencate alcune ipotesi sulle cause di questa
diminuzione, sottolineando il problema dell’impatto ambientale generato dalle linee elettriche.The White Stork Ciconia ciconia in Sicily: updating after 30 years of colonization. The aim of this
study was to analyze changes in population size, breeding success and nest location of a local White
Stork Ciconia ciconia population in Sicily from 1991 to 2020. We gathered all the available data and
field records regarding the species in Sicily and carried out several distribution maps outlining the
status of the White Stork in Sicily. Field work was then concentrated on studying and monitoring
the two most numerous colonies (“Piana di Gela” and “Piana di Catania”). During the 29 years,
population size (HPa) varied from 1 breeding pair (1991) to 82 breeding pairs (2013). The Sicilian
population of 2018-2020 is 64-71 pairs, i.e. 22.8% of the Italian breeding population. Many pairs
build a nest on top of medium voltage pylons. The highest numbers were noted in “Piana di Gela”,
which resulted to hold the largest colony in Italy. Censuses of breeding pairs showed a sharp increase
in the population between 2010 and 2011, with a modest increase in the following years. Since 2016 there was a decline in the number of pairs. Among the greatest risks is foraging in landfill and subsequent
resting spots on nearby power poles, which increases the risk of electrocution. During the
research, conservation measures (mowing of grasslands due to increase the food supply for nestlings,
creation of a mosaic of native grasslands and meadows, wetland restoration) were implemented. A
new protected nature reserve was established to safeguard the agroecosystems and wetlands of the
“Piana di Gela”
THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF POWER LINES ON BIRDS IN SICILY
Electrocution is a serious conservation problem worldwide for a large number of bird species
(BEVANGER, 1994, 1998; BIRDLIFE INTERNATIONAL, 2004; PRINSEN et al., 2011). Due to its wide
extension, it is necessary to seek methods that optimize the identification of the most dangerous pylons
(JANSS and FERRER, 2001; MANOSA, 2001), lines and the highest risk areas (TINTÓ et al., 2010; GUIL et
al., 2011). Actually, the data on bird mortality caused by electrocution and collision in Sicily are
deficient, however, a preliminary study suggests that the White Stork (Ciconia ciconia L., 1758) is one
of the most threatened species inside two Special Protection Areas (SPA) (ZAFARANA and BARBERA,
2016). The project C.L.E.S.A. aims at making a complete checklist of the species at risk, collecting
information from published articles and personal reports. Unpublished data were collected through a
request for information widely circulated among professional and dabbler ornithologists, local sections
of bird conservation ONG and wildlife services. A standard monitoring method was used to collect data,
monthly during the entire sampling period. First, we selected different transects randomly, and,
subsequently, we counted and removed all the birds found dead. A total of 152 cases were collected from
1996 to 2017, of which 85 caused by electrocution and 67 by collision. The 55.5% of the founded species
are considered as “Birds of Community Importance” (included in Annex I of the Council Directive
2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds). C. ciconia is the most species killed by electrocution
and Phoenicopterus roseus Pallas, 1811 by collision. These preliminary results suggest that this problem,
as well as having serious consequences in terms of conservation, could has serious economic
repercussions for human societies, as power failures, loss of revenue, necessity of repairs infrastructures
and cost of legal compliance (LEHMAN et al., 2007). The monitoring activities of the C.L.E.S.A.
volunteers have the purpose of implementing direct conservation actions for endangered species. The
synergy between power companies and C.L.E.S.A. will be basic to adopt the measures suggested by the
Conference of the Parties in Resolution 7.4 "Electrocution of migratory birds" (BONN, 2002) and the
current management plans for SPAs. This partnership will improve the effective field actions in Sicily
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
