    A refined loss evaluation of a three-switch double input DC-DC converter for hybrid vehicle applications

    In this paper, an accurate efficiency evaluation of an innovative three-switch double input DC-DC converter for hybrid vehicle applications was carried out. The converter was used to interface two storages, (e.g., supercapacitor and battery) to the DC link. A refined model was created in MATLAB/Simulink Plecs environment and it was used to compare the traditional four-switch converter (i.e., two DC-DC converters in parallel connection) with the innovative three-switch converter. Loss and efficiency contour maps were obtained for both converters and a comparison between them was performed. A prototype of the three-switch converter was realized and used to validate the simulation thermal model by comparing both efficiency and current waveforms obtained with simulations and experimental tests

    A New Modulation Strategy for Exploiting Discontinuous Conduction Mode in a Double-Input Three-Switch Bidirectional DC-DC Converter

    A double-input bidirectional DC-DC converter, with an innovative architecture, exploiting the use of only three switches, is taken into account in this paper. The modulation strategy proposed in the technical literature for controlling such a converter leads to a very low efficiency at low-load, because the converter is only able to operate in Continuous Conduction Mode when currents are low. A new modulation strategy, for exploiting Discontinuous Conduction Mode, is here proposed. The efficiency increase is evaluated with a MATLAB/Simulink Plecs simulation model. The control algorithm and the simulation model are validated with experimental results carried out on a converter prototype

    GaN E-HEMT based High Flatness Broadband Power Noise Source for Dynamic Identification of Mechatronic Systems and Batteries

    Still today the dynamic identification of mechatronic systems - in particular electrical machines - is often based on stimulating them with deterministic signals, being single sinusoidal tones, single steps or periodical pulse trains of fixed frequency the most common ones. Such methodologies were the most, when not the only, practicable ones when the instrumentation was limited to low frequency generators and analog oscilloscopes, at most. The modern metrological scenario allows to concretize way more sophisticated approaches nowadays, which can bring to Mechatronics more holistic and easily executable identification methods; like those based on flat noise sources traditionally used in Radio Frequency (RF). More in general, the adoption of SiC and GaN fully controllable switches demands that also Power Electronics become eventually permeated with the very different way of thinking peculiar of RF. Within the framework of such cultural and methodological evolution that Power Electronics must embrace, the paper describes the unconventional use of converters based on GaN switches as powerful high-flatness noise sources for broadband dynamic identification, here tailored for modern electrical machines and battery technologies. Indeed, owing to the much shorter raise and fall times, as well as much higher switching frequencies enabled by GaN, it is possible to greatly extend the upper boundaries of the frequency bands where desired spectra can be synthesized by commutating such fully controllable switches according to proper time-based patterns. The authors illustrate the use of a randomly PWM-modulated H-bridge employing GaN E-HEMTs as high-flatness noise source up to at least 200 kHz thanks to 1 MHz PWM carrier. Various selected experimental results from identifications of BLDC Motors and Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LiFePo4) cells are shown.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Medium Voltage Sensorless Induction Motor Drive for Subsea Applications

    In this paper, a MV induction motor drive for submarine oil pump applications is considered. The motor is usually connected to the inverter drive with a cable of tens of kilometres and sensorless control is a must since sensors can be replaced only with the use of submarine robots. For these reasons, instability phenomena can occur. To overcome these issues, a new control is proposed in this study, involving a compensated sensorless FOC algorithm based on the Luenberger observer. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is tested with simulations considering the MV drive parameters. Moreover, experimental tests are carried out on a small scale LV prototype
