    USE OF MODERN IRRIGATION TECHNIQUES BY THE FARMERS

    A Thesis Submitted to the Department of Agricultural Extension and Information System Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE (MS) IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMThe purposes of the study were to describe the selected characteristics of the farmers; to determine the extent of farmers’ use of modern irrigation technique and to explore the contribution among each of the selected characteristics of farmers with their use of modern irrigation techniques. The study was undertaken purposively in Kishoreganj Upazila under Nilphamari District. Validated and well-structured interview schedule was used to collect data from 101 respondents during 1st July, 2021 and completed in 30 July, 2021. Descriptive statistics, multiple regressions were used for analysis. The majority (65.34 percent) of the farmers had medium use of modern irrigation techniques compared to having 26.23 percent high and 7.92 percent had low use of modern irrigation techniques. Among 11 selected characteristics of the farmers three characteristics namely- education, training received and knowledge on agricultural irrigation of the respondents had significant positive contribution with their use of modern irrigation techniques but problem faced by the farmers in using modern irrigation techniques of the respondents had significant negative contribution with their use of modern irrigation techniques. The rest 7 characteristics namely, age, family size, farm size, annual family income, farming experience, agricultural extension media contact and attitude towards using modern irrigation techniques had no significant contribution with their use of modern irrigation techniques. Almost half of the farmers (48.51%) were illiterate to primary level education. Finding leads to conclude that, if suitable steps are taken to improve education level of the farmers, an appreciable proportion of the farmers will be encouraged to use of modern irrigation techniques. Increase in training facilities to develop modern irrigation techniques will minimize farmer’s problems. If the farmers gain more knowledge on modern irrigation, they will face less problems in use of modern irrigation techniques

    The Effect of Perceived Innovativeness of Student Response Systems (SRSs) on Classroom Engagement

    Students’ engagement in classes, especially in the large classes, is a challenge. Information technology (IT) is changing the way of learning in a classroom and use of IT in the education sector has significantly improved effective teaching and the learning process. Student response systems (SRSs) are one of such technologies that can enhance students’ engagement in the classroom environment. The purpose of this study is to understand how SRSs affect students’ motivation to engage in classroom activities. We hypothesized that innovativeness of SRSs, enjoyment and attitude toward SRSs can enhance students’ engagement in classrooms. We will empirically test the hypotheses. The study will help IS researchers and instructors to understand better how students’ engagement in the classroom environment can be augmented using SRSs.     Risk and Liability in Autonomous Vehicle Technology

    Autonomous vehicle (AV) systems failures recently caused multiple accidents that resulted in serious personal injury and death. These include a March 2018 accident involving a Tesla vehicle in autopilot mode that crashed into a divider on a highway, killing the driver. Another incident involved a fully autonomous Volvo XC90 sport vehicle, owned by Uber, colliding with a pedestrian, on a bicycle, crossing the road in Tempe, Arizona (Vincent, 2018; Kohli & Chadh, 2019). As a result of these mishaps, potential passengers and owners are now apprehensive towards AV systems technology. This research examines AVs from two perspectives: AV passenger perceived system risk, and AV owner perceived system liability. It develops an AV risk model that explains the attitude of passengers towards AV technology and an AV liability model that explains the attitude of owners towards AV technology. The study addresses the following research questions: 1) What liability factors influence the attitude of AV owners towards AV technology? 2) What risk factors influence the attitude of passengers towards AV technology? We conducted an online survey of qualified Amazon MTurk respondents residing in the US. Findings indicate that owners are sensitive to the liability involved in acquiring AV technology. They worry about who they let use their vehicle and consider legal repercussions when determining their perceived liability in the event that something goes wrong. For instance, virtual project rooms have been introduced by apps such as Facebook Spaces (Neubauer et al. 2017). Facebook also allows live-streaming of 360 degree videos and has an app in the oculus store that enables one to experience 360 videos and images using immersive VR glasses. Market volume worldwide for these devices are expected to increase from 9.6 million units in 2016 to over 110 million units in 2020 (Hartl and Berger 2017). \ \ There is clearly an opportunity here for other social networking companies to use the virtual reality experience to grow their user base, increase user satisfaction and user retention and give their users an enriching social experience unlike the experience on a traditional website or mobile app. However, there are challenges which companies will have to face when migrating their services to the virtual realm. Research which looks at the use of social networking applications in an immersive virtual environment is lacking. \ \ The purpose of this study is to identify the factors which influence SNS members to continuously engage in social networking activities within a virtual environment. \ \ This research addresses the following research questions: (1) What factors influence the reuse of social networking applications via VR glasses? (2) What social networking features are suitable for an immersive virtual environment? \ \ Expected contributions of this research are as follows. SNS Companies will gain knowledge about the various characteristics related to the users, social networking apps and VR glasses which play a role in determining the continued use of social networking applications via VR headsets.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
