The mucilage phenomenon in the Northern Adriatic - a critical review of the present scientific hypotheses
Aurelia polyps and medusae (Scyphozoa; Semaeostomeae; Ulmaridae) in the Northern Adriatic: their cnidome and ecology
Nematocysts play an important role in capturing prey; it was suggested that the feeding ecology of animals may result in cnidome variations. We examined nematocysts of polyps and medusae of Aurelia sp. 8 from the Northern Adriatic to detect differences/similarities in cnidome and habitats, and the results show that potential prey of these two phases of the life cycle are very different. Our observations on the nematocysts isolated from the marginal tentacles and oral arms of medusa have shown the presence of four types of nematocysts (in order of decreasing abundance): heterotrichous microbasic eurytele; atrichous isorhiza haploneme; heterotrichous isorhiza haploneme; heterothricous microbasic mastigophore (typeAI) and (A typeII). This last type is very rare (with a rel. freq. << 0.1%), and unexpected. In the polyps (tentacular crown and column) were found three types of nematocysts (in order of decreasing abundance): heterotrichous isorhiza haploneme; heterotrichous microbasic eurytele; atrichous isorhiza haploneme. The atrichous type is localized, being rare-absent in the tentacles, common in the peristomial area and in the column. Prey preferences of northern Adriatic Aurelia polyps and medusae are largely unknown. We attempted to elucidate their dietary habits using available information about stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios
Seasonal and inter-annual plankton variability in th Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic).
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Redescription of Pelagia benovici into a new jellyfish genus, Mawia, gen. nov., and its phylogenetic position within Pelagiidae (Cnidaria : Scyphozoa : Semaeostomeae)
This study provides new and additional data on morphology and a phylogenetic analysis of the recently described species Pelagia benovici Piraino, Aglieri, Scorrano & Boero, 2014 from the Northern Adriatic (Mediterranean Sea). Comprehensive morphological analyses of diagnostic characters, of which the most significant are marginal tentacles anatomy, basal pillars, gonad pattern, subgenital ostia and exumbrellar sensory pits, revealed significant differences from the currently known genera Sanderia, Chrysaora and Pelagia in the family Pelagiidae. A phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial genes (COI, 16S rRNA, 12S rRNA) and nuclear ribosomal genes (28S rRNA, ITS1/ITS2 regions), together with cladistic analysis of morphological characters, positioned Pelagia benovici as a sister taxon with Sanderia malayensis, and both share a common ancestor with Chrysaora hysoscella. Pelagia benovici does not share a direct common ancestor with the genus Pelagia, and thus we propose it should not belong to this genus. Therefore, a new genus Mawia, gen. nov. (Semaeostomeae : Pelagiidae) is described, and Pelagia benovici is renamed as Mawia benovici, comb, nov
Changes in the northern Adriatic ecosystem and hypertrophic appearance of gelatinous aggregates
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
