On the choice of the shunt circuit for single-mode vibration damping of piezoactuated structures
This paper deals with single-mode passive damping of piezoactuated structures. The problem of shunting in the best way a piezoelectric actuator is discussed, and a new passive shunt circuit, given by the parallel of an inductance and a capacitance in series to a resistance, is here proposed. For a su±ciently high piezoelectric coupling coe±cient, it is analytically shown to be more performant than the classical resistive-inductive shunt circuit, in the sense that it guarantees an higher exponential time decay rate of the free vibrations

Modelling and simulation of long-span bridges under aerodynamic loads
This paper deals with the dynamic stability of long-span bridges under non-stationary aerodynamic loads. Some generalizations of
classical models are presented in order to check the critical conditions both in the case of flutter and divergence for long-span bridges with particular reference to the cable-stayed scheme. Furthermore, a numerical model based on a finite volume
formulation of the flow problem around the girder cross-section is developed, able to simulate the steady and non-steady wind load
conditions on the bridge. Good agreement with wind tunnel test results is found for the Normandy Bridge design cross-section
models
On the pin-bearing failure load of GFRP bolted laminates: An experimental analysis on the influence of bolt diameter
This paper presents results summary of an experimental investigation aimed at evaluating the influence of the bolt diameter on the bearing failure strength of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bolted laminates with epoxy matrix, for different values of fibre-to-load inclination angle. In this study, three different types of laminates were tested: one of them is mono-directional while the other two are bidirectional, with two different stacking sequence. Reductions in the pin-bearing ultimate load was found to be linearly dependent on bolt diameter. A pin-bearing design formula is also proposed based on experimental results
Effective torsional stiffness of composite shafts reinforced by functionally-graded fibres
In this paper, a fibre-reinforced composite shaft is considered, comprising functionally graded, cylindrically-orthotropic, parallel fibres embedded into a homogeneous isotropic matrix. The aim of the analysis is to determine the effective torsional stiffness of the shaft and the shear stresses at the fibre-matrix interface. In particular, the main issue is to understand how these quantities depend on the grading features of the fibres
