Maurice Pennington Political Cartoon Collection
Maurice Pennington was a photographer and cartoonist for The Atlanta Inquirer during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. A talented multimedia artist, Pennington documented the boycotts, sit-ins, and the arrests of students, commenting critically on the political and social climate in Atlanta through cartoons - skewering local politicians, admonishing Black leaders for their accommodationist views, and reminding his audience of the incompatibility of segregation and democracy.

About Pennington ePress
Pennington ePress is the academic open press of George Fox University Libraries. Our mission is to publish academic works by authors who are affiliated with George Fox University, or who have work in research areas of significant interest to the university. In addition, Pennington ePress includes some public-domain, out-of-print books of relevance and interest to the university or Northwest Yearly Meeting.
Public Access: Full texts of works are published online in a public-access format, available free to users worldwide.
Analytics: The DigitalCommons is indexed by Google and Google Scholar and provides download statistics and readership maps to authors.
Processing Charges: Pennington ePress does not levy any author processing charges.
Print-on-demand: Some titles are made available as print-on-demand publications. Current publications available in this printed format will be available at the Pennington ePress storefront at lulu.com.
Style: Pennington ePress does not provide editing, design, and composition (typesetting) services.
ISBNs: All new works are assigned International Standard Book Numbers for both electronic and printed editions.
Cataloging: Catalog records for Pennington ePress are available via OCLC.
Readership: Pennington ePress can support projects for any size readership, and can serve as a platform for scholars whose works might not meet the financial requirements for publication by a traditional press.
Preservation: Permanent access to materials is ensured through the GFU DigitalCommons.
Copyright and Licensing: Works are published under a nonexclusive permission to publish agreement. The electronic works reside in the Digital Commons@George Fox University repository and remain at all times free to readers. Authors retain ownership of copyright, and may publish elsewhere without restrictions or limitation. In retaining copyright, authors are free to superimpose a license on their work in any manner they choose, including assigning a Creative Commons license.

Coupling constants and unification
The first part of this work gives a general background for the ideas involved in the research presented in this thesis. Coupling constants, Renor-malisation Group Equation, Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) and Super symmetry (SUSY) are briefly introduced. Following this, we analyse the unification parameters M(_GUT) and l/α(_GUT) as functions of the number of fermion families (F) and Higgs boson multiplets (S). Analytical and numerical solutions to the leading and next-to-leading order evolution equation for the couplings a, are obtained. This is done in the context of the Standard Model embedded in SU(5), SUSY SU(5) and L-R SO(IO). In all these GUTs, the first order analytical approach proves itself a useful probe to examine the structure of M(_GUT) and l/α(_GUT) in terms of the variables F and S. General trends remain the same after including second order corrections to the evolution equations. Recent precision data for the coupling constants allow more definitive conclusions to be reached. We find that restrictions on the unification parameters constrain F and S in such a way that SU(5) is ruled out by constraints on 5 (in agreement with previous results), F is severely limited in SUSY SU(5) and, unlike SUSY SU(5), an acceptable unification scenario can still be obtained when Higgs bosons are ignored in L-R SO(IO). The structures of the latter two GUTs are found to be very different although some features are common to both

Maurice Pennington Political Cartoons, circa 1960
These are three political cartoons by Maurice Pennington about segregation and the civil rights protest. The first picture, "Needs A Size 45.1 percent", depicts an Atlanta Black student with a sign attached to his leg saying, " 'Suit' of Inadequate School Facilities". The second picture, "Fire Fighter?", shows a fireman with a label saying, "Some of Us", trying to out a house fire with gasoline. The gas pump is saying, "Gasoline. Pump of 'Still Buying' ", while simultaneously two students (one woman and one man) are putting out the fire with water and attached to them is a sign saying, "Students". Lastly, the third picture, "It's All Right to Seat Them. They're Not Americans", illustrates a hostess uncertain about seating two patrons of color and her manager explaining it's all right to seat them. 3 pages
SPQR – Spectroscopy: Prospects, Questions & Results
Tremendous progress has been made in mapping out the spectrum of hadrons over the past decade with plans to make further advances in the decade ahead. Baryons and mesons, both expected and unexpected, have been found, the results of precision experiments often with polarized beams, polarized targets and sometimes polarization of the final states. All these hadrons generate poles in the complex energy plane that are consequences of the strong coupling regime of QCD. They reveal how this works
Progress in succession in the Pennington grove of Pinus virginiana
In 1932 the senior author reported on an ecological survey in stands of Pinus virginiana in Munroe County, Indiana, viz. the Pennington grove near Weimer Lake, two miles sw. of Bloomington, on highway 45, and the Christie-Freeman groves, four miles nw. of Ellettsville. At the time of the 1931 survey very little ground cover had developed in either of these groves. The repesent study considered only the Pennington grove. This stand has seen no decided cultural modifications since the 1931 survey. Periodic surveys were made in the stand by various groups of ecology students of Butler University. These surveys showed a definite trend in succession which now definitely forecasts replacement of the 100 per cent coverage of crown by Pinus virginiana. The invaders consist of a large number of broadleaved species. The forst floor, which in 1931 was almost bare, is today extensively covered by herbs and the seedlings of tree and shrub species. The authors made a survey in July and September of 1947 to define in quantitative terms the trends in succession in the Pennington grove
