Teacher formative assessment: the missing link in response to intervention
Response to Intervention (RtI) focuses on the assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring of student academic performance and social behavior. Despite requiring highly-qualified personnel for successful implementation, the implementation of Rtl has not focused on applying its foundational principles towards promoting teacher effectiveness through assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring of teacher classroom practice. Compounding this problem is the lack of availability of reliable and valid teacher assessments to apply in an Rtl model for teacher professional development. This chapter provides a rationale for applying RtI principles to teacher professional development and how teacher formative assessment can improve educator effectiveness, student learning, and social behaviors. The Classroom Strategies Scale (CSS, Reddy & Dudek, 2014), a new multidimensional assessment of instructional and behavioral management practices is discussed as an example of one promising tool for promoting teachers professional development within an Rtl model. We offer a synthesis of the theory, research, and evidence of reliability and validity of the CSS. The application of teacher formative assessment in job-embedded professional development/coaching models for schools is discussed. Transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing glyoxalase enzymes resist an increase in methylglyoxal and maintain higher reduced glutathione levels under salinity stress
AbstractThe mechanism behind enhanced salt tolerance conferred by the overexpression of glyoxalase pathway enzymes was studied in transgenic vis-à-vis wild-type (WT) plants. We have recently documented that salinity stress induces higher level accumulation of methylglyoxal (MG), a potent cytotoxin and primary substrate for glyoxalase pathway, in various plant species [Yadav, S.K., Singla-Pareek, S.L., Ray, M., Reddy, M.K. and Sopory, S.K. (2005) MG levels in plants under salinity stress are dependent on glyoxalase I and glutathione. Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 337, 61–67]. The transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing glyoxalase pathway enzymes, resist an increase in the level of MG that increased to over 70% in WT plants under salinity stress. These plants showed enhanced basal activity of various glutathione related antioxidative enzymes that increased further upon salinity stress. These plants suffered minimal salinity stress induced oxidative damage measured in terms of the lipid peroxidation. The reduced glutathione (GSH) content was high in these transgenic plants and also maintained a higher reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH:GSSG) ratio under salinity. Manipulation of glutathione ratio by exogenous application of GSSG retarded the growth of non-transgenic plants whereas transgenic plants sustained their growth. These results suggest that resisting an increase in MG together with maintaining higher reduced glutathione levels can be efficiently achieved by the overexpression of glyoxalase pathway enzymes towards developing salinity stress tolerant plants

Advancing instructional coaching with teacher formative assessment and input
With increased attention to teacher quality and accountability, instructional coaching has emerged as a popular form of teacher support and professional development in literacy and other areas of instruction. Despite significant interest from school personnel, researchers, and federal funders, there remains a lack of consensus around the key components and activities of instructional coaching. To that end, studies that use quantitative and qualitative methods can offer valuable information on the development and validation of coaching practices. This chapter briefly describes the Classroom Strategies Assessment System Coaching Model that draws on the adult learning and formative assessment literature. We offer key observations of educators' knowledge of and experience in instructional coaching from focus groups conducted with teachers in high-poverty, urban elementary schools. Design thinking for repurposing used packaging timber
Timber and wood based materials like plywood have been used for packaging from a long time. As a normal practice the used packaging timber in India is used for repacking, as firewood and low-end interior decoration purpose. Sustainable eco-efficient repurposing of used packaging timber forms the basis for \u84DESIGN THINKING FOR RE-PURPOSING USED PACKAGING TIMBER?. Used packaging timber from industries and warehouses is obtained by scrap dealers and sorted according to material, size, quality and quantity. The scrap dealers remove nails and screws and the material is sold in retail by weight to the user. Design Circle, Bangalore, India have been re-purposing used packaging timber and plywood from 2004 onwards. The packaging timber from scrap dealers is processed further to suit different product categories like toys, educational products, lifestyle accessories, physiotherapy products, play and furniture using regular woodworking techniques. Value addition to the material is done by glue lamination transforming the packaging timber into solid timber sections with expensive feel and look. The constrained availability of the raw material calls for design of low quantity and high quality production. The paper presents product examples for different sections of the pyramid, designed and executed at design circle, Bangalore. The paper points the constraints, fresh avenues, sustainable practices in raw material procurement and in product design. The paper emphasizes the importance of re-purposing of a renewable, sustainable, material like timber after serving its originally intended purpose

Female employment in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India and its two most urbanized districts (Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad): a 1991 census analysis, 1998
This research examined the relationship of female employment with three major contributing factors: ecological, motivational, and personal ability factors, in the state of Andhra Pradesh and its two highly urbanized districts (Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad). The 1991 census data were utilized as a major source. Specifically, the study tested the following six hypotheses: 1. Female work force participation rates vary by rural-urban residence, industrial categories, and National Industrial Classification (NIC). 2. Differential female work force participation rates can be observed by class of worker and occupational type. 3. Female workers vary by their educational attainment, age, and marital status. 4. The growth rate of female work force participation is significantly effected by change in industrial structure, time-period, and rural-urban residence over a period of time. 5. Female employment, especially in non-agricultural and non-household sectors, is significantly effected by education and urbanization, independently as well as combined. 6. The structure of female employment is the same between the state of Andhra Pradesh and its districts, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad, but the size of participation may vary. The results of the data analysis confirmed all hypotheses
