    No full text
In this article the author focus on the role of the independent midwives in Italy and Spain, where she conducted her fieldwork between 2010 and 2015. Emerging data show that in these contexts – where the medicalisation of childbirth dominates – independent midwives are today the keepers of the physiology and of the female knowledge relating to birth. A central concept is “respect”; around this concept orbits the midwives’ vision of the process and all the practices that are deployed during the caring process. To beand to dooutside the widespread system allow independent midwives to critically examine the assumptions and paradigms of scientific medicine, but also wider social processes. In this sense, a social, a cultural and a political role of the independent midwives was highlighted

    Prefazione

The text introduces the research conducted by Patrizia Quattrocchi on the knowledge and techniques of the body of traditional Mayan midwives, inserting it in the framework of the relationships between indigenous therapists and Mexican health institutions. Starting from this specific case of coexistence and, in some ways, competition between different approaches and resources for managing reproductive health, the author highlights the implications that the Yucatec example can have for a critical consideration of biomedical practices and the relationship between health care staff and native patients also on a much wider scale, that includes Italy and the western world

The article aims to examine the discipline of the “new” preliminary tax agreement introduced by Legislative Decree no. 13/2024 following the enabling law no. 111/2023. It constitutes the re-proposal of similar regimes, variously named and already envisaged by the Legislator in the early 2000s, The Author focuses on the qualifying profiles, such as the access conditionalities and the determination of the “agreed” taxable base, entrusted toa substantially probabilistic processing with respect to which, unlike what is established by the enabling law, the rules do not provide for any preliminary interlocution between taxpayer and tax Administration. The profile of greatest interest concerns the coherence with the constitutional principles in tax matters, in particular ability to pay, considering the taxation based on a consensual model; the taxpayer is in fact subject to taxation even if the income does not become effective. The article ends with an examination of the procedural outco mes of the occurrence of pathological events, relating to the termination of the agreement

Folate deficiency is not associated with increased mitochondrial genomic instability: Results from dietary intake and lymphocytic mtDNA 4977-bp deletion in healthy young women in Italy

    No full text
The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) 4977-bp deletion is a biomarker of mitochondrial genomic instability. It is frequently detected in a number of sporadic diseases, and it accumulates in many tissues during aging. Folic acid plays an important role in the maintenance of genomic stability in mammals. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to characterise the levels of the mtDNA deletion in the lymphocytes of healthy young women, taking into account folate intake, red blood cell (RBC) folate levels and the distribution of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene C677T polymorphism. Folate intake was estimated by a food frequency questionnaire. Determination of the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and of the mtDNA deletion was performed by real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis. A total of 476 women were enrolled. Low levels of deletion were found (mean ?Ct = 1.24). After multivariate analysis, results did not show any significant relationship between age, smoking habits, pregnancy status, nutritional status, inadequate folate intake, folate deficiency, use of folic acid supplements, MTHFR C677T polymorphism and mtDNA 4977-bp deletions. The lack of association between inadequate folate intake, folate deficiency and mitochondrial genomic instability was confirmed also considering reference values of folate based on DNA damage prevention. Our results indicate that mtDNA 4977-bp deletions are maintained at low levels in lymphocytes of young healthy women despite the wide range of variation of folate intakes and folate status. Future studies, carefully designed to address limits and methodological issues related to variation of this biomarker as an effect of different dietary patterns and of folate status, could provide further insight on the specific mechanisms that are acting in lymphocytes of healthy subjects under observed folate intake. © 2014 © The Author 2014. Seismogeochemical algorithms for earthquake prediction: an overview

    No full text
While the literature abounds with case histories related to geochemical precursory phenomena, only a few studies on definite seismogeochemical algorithms have been published so far. Currently, available theoretical algorithms are based on obsolete views of fluid migration processes that do not take into account the possibility of rapid and long-distance gas migration from the focal zone. Empirical algorithms are often based on a limited number of data and need validation for several geostructural environments. The algorithms of Sardarov (1981) and Rikitake (1987), for Rn and other geochemical elements, suggest that a definite relationship exists between geochemical parameters and seismic events. Their validation must be based on the verification of independence (maintained by the former author) or dependence (maintained by the latter) of the precursor time on the seismic data.JCR Journalope
