A Novel Paradigm to Achieve Sustainable Regeneration in Historical Centres with Cultural Heritage
AbstractHistorical urban centres have particular vulnerabilities both to natural hazards and to extreme climatic events. At the same time, cultural heritage is a significant driving force in the European economy, society and culture. This paper suggests that a novel paradigm, capable to tackle the issue of protecting Historical Centres with Cultural Heritage Value with a holistic approach, would allow a sustainable management of their values. Historical Centres with Cultural Heritage Value conservation needs to be integrated into wider urban -and metropolitan- strategies. Setting up a novel methodology for the analysis and management of risk of Heritage City Centres would promote a wider understanding of the social and ecological costs associated with the loss of cultural assets. This can lead to better informed clear and measurable targets and evidence-based decision making. The resulting strategies should help costly damage to valuable Historical Centres with Cultural Heritage Value assets, but will also lead to the enhancement of Heritage City Centres to ensure progressive resilience measures are implemented in the future in metropolitan areas
Attualità di un classico. Rileggendo "The Child Savers" di Tony Platt
The essay reconstructs the history of the different editions of The Child Savers by Anthony M. Platt, not sticking to a merely philological perspective, but trying to highlight the theoretical transformations that pass through it in its three different editions (1969, 1977 and 2007). This is an intellectual evolution that is closely linked to the political biography of the Author and with the modulations of his research. Both the stratigraphy of meanings that characterizes Platt’s work and the relevance of his perspective on the topic of juvenile justice are highlighted. In fact, more than fifty years later, his work continues to spark discussions among generations of scholars, as demonstrated by the papers published in this sectio
Engaging citizens in digital public service innovation ecosystems-insights from the Netherlands and Italy
Public agencies struggle with engaging citizens in digital public service innovation. The notion that citizen engagement in public service innovation can lead to more citizen-friendly digital services is widely accepted. Moreover, citizen engagement has also become an indicator of legitimacy; public service innovation without citizen engagement is more likely to be scrutinized on public values like privacy, transparency, fairness, and citizen control. Yet it remains difficult to engage with citizens throughout the various stages of innovation. Often, the hard question of how to balance system performance and public values in innovation resurfaces, and we cannot leave it to software programmers to answer this question. This short paper reveals how the Netherlands and Italy are engaging citizens in public service innovation. We found that in both countries, the quadruple helix approach is gaining support and citizen engagement is increasingly becoming the norm rather than the exception. Both countries are gaining experience with new citizen engagement methods like user-driven prototyping and living labs. We found that these methods increase empathy, creativity and reflection on ethical dilemmas. Following such methods also signals to policymakers that a democratic process was followed, ultimately backing a specific innovation direction. Other countries looking to enhance citizen engagement in public services innovation can benefit from the insights presented in this paper.Information and Communication Technolog
Finite Volume Morphodynamic Model Useful in Coastal Environment
Integrated coastal zone planning requires the support of engineering tools to perform an accurate analysis of the morphodynamics of the coastal environment. In this paper, a numerical 2DH morphodynamic model is presented as a first step in order to develop an adequate numerical model able to help in the planning and management of the coastal areas. It has been applied to some benchmark tests and the results are presented and discussed

Blastoschizomyces capitatus: an emerging cause of invasive fungal disease in leukemia patients
Blastoschizomyces capitatus (formerly named Trichosporon capitatum or Geotrichum capitatum) is a rare cause of invasive fungal disease in immunocompromised hosts. We retrospectively studied epidemiologic, clinical, pathologic, and microbiologic features of this infection during a 68-month period at the Division of Hematology of the University La Sapienza in Rome. Twenty patients with evidence of B. capitatus were identified: 12 were infected, four were possibly infected, and four had evidence of B. capitatus colonization but were not infected by this fungus. Pulmonary infiltrates were seen in seven infected patients; four of these patients eventually developed mycetomalike cavitations. Eight infected patients presented clinical and radiologic features of focal hepatitis compatible with hepatosplenic candidiasis. Of the 12 infected patients, two did not receive any antifungal treatment and died, five did not show any response to systemic antifungal therapy, and five received prolonged amphotericin B plus 5-fluorocytosine therapy. Of the last group, three patients achieved stable remission of their acute leukemia and were cured, and two improved but had an apparent relapse of B. capitatus infection after their acute leukemia recurred
