Extending the scope of a known furan synthesis - A novel route to 1,2,4-trisubstituted pyrroles

2-(Acylmethylene)propanediol diacetates, which cyclize readily under acidic conditions to give furans (76-84%) react with primary amines under palladium catalysis to give 1,2,4-trisubstituted pyrroles in moderate to good yields (39-53%). When glycine methyl ester is used as the amine, substituted methyl pyrrol-1-ylacetates (31-82%) are obtained

Nanotechnology for the progress of lithium batteries R&D

In this paper we report the strategy followed in our laboratories for the progress of lithium ion batteries. The results show that nanotechnology is a very promising tool for achieving breakthrough in electrode and electrolyte materials. The concept is demonstrated for the cases of metal storage and metal oxide anodes, phospho olivine lithium iron phosphate cathodes and solvent-free, poly(ethylene oxide)-based polymer electrolytes. A study on PVdF-based SiO2 - containing composite gel-type polymer electrolytes for lithium batteries

    No full text
Several gel membranes of the type PVdF/EC-PC/SiO 2 without and with electrolyte salts have been characterised by vibrational spectroscopy and by galvanostatic cycling tests. It is found that the structure of the PVdF matrix in the membranes depends on the gel composition and preparation conditions. At high loads of polymer parts of the PVdF chains assume a TGTG\u27 conformation typical of the so-called "structural form II". The formation of PVdF of form II is favoured when slow cooling rates are employed during the membrane preparation. In galvanostatic cycling tests in combination with a Sn/SnSb electrode, the present gel-type polymer electrolytes give results comparable to those obtained with the corresponding liquid electrolytes.

24.04.2014 | Josef Wachtler & Martin Ebner (Graz

A safe, low-cost, and sustainable lithium-ion polymer battery

    No full text
A polymer lithium-ion battery, formed by a Li4/3Ti5/3O4- LiFePO4 electrode combination and a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF)-based gel electrolyte, is presented and discussed. The electrochemical characterization demonstrates that this battery is capable of delivering appreciable capacity values at rates ranging from C/32 (160 mAh g(-1)) to 0.75C (130 mAh g(-1)), this being accompanied by a remarkable cycle life. In addition, because the two electrodes are based on common and nontoxic materials and operate within the stability window of the electrolyte, the battery is expected to be safe, inexpensive, and compatible with the environment. All these properties make the battery of prospective interest for application in the hybrid and electric vehicle field. (C) 2004 The Electrochemical Society
