Distribution of joints in the hinge-line culmination of foreland-verging overturned anticlines: An example from the Montagna dei Fiori structure in the Central Apennines of Italy

    No full text
The distribution of joints, veins and shear fractures in the Montagna dei Fiori overturned anticline is here reported. Two joint sets, longitudinal and transverse to the NNW-SSE anticline axial trend, and a conjugate system of shear fractures, are recognized. The transverse and longitudinal joint sets have a pre-folding development likely related to the foreland/foredeep flexure. The transverse joints were reopened during layer-parallel shortening along with the development of the shear fractures. Then, during syn-folding outer-arc extension and hinge-line culmination fold-axial parallel extension, both the longitudinal and transverse joints were enhanced and reactivated, respectively.© Cambridge University Press 201

Humor and Gender Roles: Does Age Make a Difference?

    No full text
Crawford's analysis in 2003 suggests that humor interacts with gender so that traditional social norms of femininity and masculinity may be reinforced or diminished. Yet age as a covariate was not considered. Assessment of the attitudes toward humor among 72 older women ( M = 72.0, SD = 9.8, range = 51–93 years) and 24 older men ( M = 69.8, SD = 6.8, range = 59–90 years) in 1996 by Vitulli and Parman suggest ratings on a Likert-type scale (anchored by 5: strongly agree and 1: strongly disagree) in which humor and gender interact. Moreover, a post hoc Scheffé test showed a significant sex effect on the female-oriented scale. Older women perceived humor as an important quality for women, whereas older men did not. Generational differences among studies on humor and sex underscore the need for contemporary research inclusive of age measures. </jats:p

Perception of Time: Variations in Verbal Content and Delay of Estimation

    No full text
Delay of time estimation results in consistently longer judgments than immediate estimation, yet confirmatory studies have relied primarily on numerical digits for interpolated material as shown, for example, by Vitulli and Rowe in 1999. The present study used three paragraphs audiotaped from a 1998 textbook in general psychology by Baron as stimuli presented for judgment of the passage of time. Among 218 undergraduate volunteers delay of estimation produced significantly longer judgments regardless of the verbal passage, and short-term memory scores varied as a function of content. </jats:p

Undergraduates’ Interparental Conflict Mediation Based on Conflict Valence, Intensity, and Resolution

Rogers ’20 Major: Psychology Faculty Mentor: Kelly A. Warmuth, Psychology Undergraduates may be more likely to mediate interparental conflict when perceived as destructive, rather than constructive. Participants were 161 undergraduates who listened to six audio clips of disagreements and reported their perceptions as if those disagreements occurred in their families. Key findings suggest that undergraduates were more likely to mediate conflicts as perceived intensity and negativity increased, but not as resolution decreased. These findings emphasize the effects of destructive interparental conflicts on undergraduates’ security

Obstacle Detection for Start-Inhibit and Low Speed Driving

The work described in this paper has been developed in the framework of the integrated project APALACI-PReVENT, a research activity funded by the European Commission to contribute to road safety by developing and demonstrating preventive safety technologies and applications. The goal of the system presented in this work is the development of a vision system for detecting potential obstacles in front of a slowly moving or still vehicle. When the vehicle is still, a background subtraction approach is used assuming that the background keeps stationary for a limited amount of time; thus, a reference background is computed and used to detect changes into the scene. A different approach is used when the vehicle is moving. The system, by means of inertial sensors, can detect ego-motion and correct background information accordingly. A temporal stereo match technique, able to detect obstacles in moving situations, completes the system. According to experimental results, the proposed algorithm can be useful in different automotive applications, requiring real-time segmentation without assumptions on background motion
