    Britannica encyclopedia is a prestigious name in the scholarly world. There was quite a commotion when Nature published a report comparing Britannica with Wikepedia - an online free encyclopedia. The report concluded that the number of faults/discrepencies in Britannica is slightly lower compared to Wikipedia. In response to this publication of Nature, Britannica waged a war on Nature. This article highlights the vast possibilities and hurdles for Wikipedia to grow into an authentic online reference source. It also highlights with statistics the strengths, weaknesses and growing popularity of Wikipedia. The author concludes that using online wikepedia as a reference source instead of costly encyclopedias like Britannica is both economically and strategically beneficial to Public Libraries and Schools

    To Formalize or Not to Formalize? Comparisons of Microenterprise Data from Southern and East Africa

    Why do firms choose to locate in the informal sector? Researchers often argue that the high cost of regulation prevents informal firms from becoming formal and productive. Our results point to a more nuanced story. Using data from surveys of microenterprises in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, we find that the labor productivity of informal firms is virtually indistinguishable from that of formal firms in East Africa, but very different in Southern Africa. We provide a theoretical model to explain this result, based on the key assumption that firms may evade taxes subject to a cost (or concealment cost) that is increasing and convex in the firm’s employment size. Consequently, the productivity distributions reflect the differences in concealment costs and the opportunity cost of formality. Greater enforcement of laws and better provision of services such as finance and electricity to formally registered firms in Southern Africa means that firms are more likely to register; those that do not are likely to be operating as “survivalist” firms. But in East Africa, weak enforcement of tax payment and no significant difference in access to services between formal and informal firms means that these variables do not explain the allocation of firms across the informal-formal divide. We conclude that in countries with weak business environments, informal firms are just as likely as formal firms to increase their productivity as they grow. Thus, interventions to increase productivity and lower the cost of formality may be helpful. But in countries with strong business environments such as those in Southern Africa, owners of informal firms are likely to be better off entering the labor market as wage labor.     Finding k Simple Shortest Paths and Cycles

    We present algorithms and techniques for several problems related to finding multiple simple shortest paths and cycles in a graph. Our main result is a new algorithm for finding k simple shortest paths for all pairs of vertices in a weighted directed graph G = (V, E). For k = 2 our algorithm runs in O(mn + n^2 log n) time where m and n are the number of edges and vertices in G. For k = 3 our algorithm runs in O(mn^2 + n^3 log n) time, which is almost a factor of n faster than the best previous algorithm. Our approach is based on forming suitable path extensions to find simple shortest paths; this method is different from the 'detour finding' technique used in most of the prior work on simple shortest paths, replacement paths, and distance sensitivity oracles. We present new algorithms for generating simple cycles and simple paths in G in non-decreasing order of their weight. The algorithm for generating simple paths is much faster,and uses another variant of path extensions

    Ramya Vijaya will present perspectives from her recent book “Indian Immigrant Women and Work: The American Experience”, co-authored with WWU Political Science professor Bidisha Biswas. The book investigates the work trajectories and related assimilation experiences of independent Indian women who have chosen their own migratory pathways in the U.S. Narratives about women immigrants tend to be narrow, primarily viewed either as family migrants following the path chosen by men, or victims of desperation, forced into the migrant path due to economic exigencies. This book widens the narrative by focusing on a group of independent, high-skilled women immigrants. Though they may be a relatively privileged and empowered group, their lives intersect with the gender constraints of labor markets in both India and the U.S., which provides a unique perspective to the immigrant assimilation narrative.     Conversion-type anode materials of transition metal oxides, sulfides and selenides MaXb (M = transition metal, X = O, S, and Se) are being heavily studied in the fields of alkali-ion batteries, including Li-, Na-, and K-ion batteries (LIBs, NIBs, and KIBs). This is because the conversion reaction of a MaXb anode is a redox process of multielectron transfer per formula, generating a large capacity and potentially leading to a high energy density of battery cells.
