    Cones and Cartan geometry

    No full text
We show that the extended principal bundle of a Cartan geometry of type (A(m,R),GL(m,R)), endowed with its extended connection ωˆ, is isomorphic to the principal A(m,R)-bundle of affine frames endowed with the affine connection as defined in classical Kobayashi-Nomizu volume I. Then we classify the local holonomy groups of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold. It follows that if the holonomy group of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold is compact then the Riemannian manifold is locally a product of cones.Fil: Di Scala, Antonio Jose'. Bernardo Antonio Vittone: acoustics and architecture in the XVIII century

    No full text
Contemporary critics have identified Savoy architect Bernardo Vittone as a major contributor to the establishment of the concept and experience of architecture as the "art of construction" in the 18th century. Vittone edited the first Guarino Guarini's publication , whose mastery of theoretical and scientific aspects he was never credited to have matched. Vittone's approach to architecture was mainly practical, his plans chiefly derived from the rules of mechanics and descriptive geometry. Experience was his main source of inspiration. Designs, plans, domes and vaults are but ways to achieve balance and harmony and so are precision and control of the relation between geometry and acoustics, architecture and music. In his book Istruzioni diverse concernenti l'officio dell'Architetto Civile (Alternative instructions on the civil Architecture) morover he included the second appendix the "Armonic Instructions", within a dissertation on the nature of sound, its propagation in open spaces, in closed ones and its relation with music. In this paper a commented overview is given matching his description of acoustics with present-day knowledg

On the nullity distribution of a submanifold of a space form

If M is a submanifold of a space form, the nullity distribution N of its second fundamental form is (when defined) the common kernel of its shape operators. In this paper we will give a local description of any submanifold of the Euclidean space by means of its nullity distribution. We will also show the following global result: if M is a complete, irreducible submanifold of the Euclidean space or the sphere then its perpendicular complementary distribution is completely non integrable. This means that any two points in M can be joined by a curve everywhere perpendicular to N. We will finally show that this statement is false for a submanifold of the hyperbolic space.Fil: Vittone, Francisco. Universidad Nacional de Rosario. Some Isoperimetric Problems in Planes with Density

    No full text
We study the isoperimetric problem in Euclidean space endowed with a density. We first consider piecewise constant densities and examine particular cases related to the characteristic functions of half-planes, strips and balls. We also consider continuous modification of Gauss density in R^2. Finally, we give a list of related open questions
