    Influence of motor units recruitment and firing rate on the soundmyogram and EMG characteristics in cat gastrocnemius

    The separate contributions of the recruitment level and of the firing rate of the motor units on the soundmyogram and electromyogram time domain parameters were investigated during stimulation of the motor nerve of the cat gastrocnemius muscle. Upon orderly increase in the number of active motor units at a fixed firing rate, both the peak to peak amplitude (P-P(max)) and the root mean square (RMS) of the sound myogram increased. At full recruitment the increase in firing rate from 2.5 to 50 Hz induced an exponential decline in the P-P(max). The RMS, however, followed this trend only from 15 to 50 Hz while showing an increase from 2.5 to 10 Hz. During simultaneous changes of recruitment and firing rate, the effect of increasing the number of motor units on the P-P(max) and RMS is dampened by the increasing firing rate. The peak to peak amplitude of the EMG compound action potential increased with the number of active motor units. Moreover, its amplitude was not influenced by the firing rate. The EMG RMS, however, increases as a function of the firing rate. The results indicate that both the number and the firing rate of the active motor units contribute to the determination of the soundmyogram characteristics. Moreover, the peculiar changes of the soundmyogram time domain properties, compared to the ones of the EMG, allow one to differentiate the influence of the motor units number and firing rate on the electrical and mechanical performance of the muscle when stimulated

    Force and surface mechanomyogram relationship in cat gastrocnemius

    The aim of this study was to compare the force (F) and the muscle transverse diameter changes during electrical stimulation of the motor nerve. In four cats the exposed motor nerves of the medial gastrocnemius were stimulated as follows: (a) eight separate trials at fixed firing rates (FR) from 5 to 50Hz (9s duration, supramaximal amplitude); (b) 5 to 50Hz linear sweep in 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10s (supramaximal amplitude, separate trials); (c) four separate trials at 40Hz, the motor units (MUs) being orderly recruited in 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10s. The muscle surface displacement was detected by a laser distance sensor pointed at the muscle surface. The resulting electrical signal was termed surface mechanomyogram (MMG). In stimulation patterns (a) and (b) the average F and MMG increased with FR. With respect to their values at 50Hz the amplitude of the unfused signal oscillations at 5Hz was much larger in MMG than in force. The signal rising phase was always earlier in MMG than in F. In (c) trials, F increased less in the first than in the second half of the recruiting time. MMG had an opposite behaviour. The results indicate that the force and the lateral displacement are not linearly related. The different behaviour of F and MMG, from low to high level of the MUs' pool activation, suggests that the force generation and the muscle dimensional change processes are influenced by different components of the muscle mechanical model

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Force generation performance and motor unit recruitment strategy in muscles of contralateral limbs

    The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the motor unit (MU) recruitment strategy of the agonist and antagonist muscles in the dominant arm differs from that in the non-dominant arm, The median frequency (MF) of the power density spectrum (PDS) of the electromyogram (EMG) was used as a tracking parameter to describe the MU recruitment. In 8 subjects the EMG was recorded from the biceps brachii and triceps brachii of each limb during isometric elbow flexion performed in a ramp fashion, Force was increased from 0 to 100% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) in 3 s following a track displayed on an oscilloscope. When comparing the dominant versus non-dominant arm we found no statistical difference in the MU recruitment pattern of the biceps brachii and the triceps. Because the dominant arm was not always the better performing arm, we grouped the data according to the ability of the subjects to track the ramp signal. In this case we found a statistically significant difference between the better and worse performing arm in the full MU recruitment of the biceps. A more precise and accurate control of the increase in force was obtained when the central nervous system selected a slower and prolonged recruitment of MUs in the agonist muscle.     Transients of the force and surface mechanomyogram during cat gastrocnemius tetanic stimulation

    The aim of the study was to investigate the time relationship between force and muscle surface displacement, detected as the surface mechanomyogram (MMG) by a laser distance sensor, in the transient phases of a tetanic stimulation. For this purpose the motor nerve of the exposed medial gastrocnemius of four cats was supramaximally stimulated at 30, 40 and 50 Hz for 9 s. Force was detected by a transducer connected at the distal tendon while MMG was measured after pointing the laser beam at the muscle belly. We found that the MMG always anticipated and trailed the force changes during the on- and off-phase of the tetani, respectively. Independently of the stimulation rate, the half-times of the two signals were: on-phase, about 76 ms for force and 33 ms for MMG; off-phase, about 83 ms for force and 132 ms for MMG. There are two main comments to make about these results. First, during the on-phase the shortening of the contractile elements results at first in a muscle geometry change with low output force. After this, when the slack of the elastic-connective tissue has been taken up, the tension is efficiently transmitted to the tendon. Second, the different force and MMG dynamics in the on- and off-phases determine a counter-clockwise hysteresis with more force produced at a given muscle surface displacement during relaxation. To explain the results, the possible specific roles of some components of the muscle mechanical model, muscle mechanical properties and intra-muscular phenomena taking place during contraction have been discussed

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
