Orthopedic injuries and their treatment in children during earthquakes : a systematic review
Orthopedic injuries commonly affect children during earthquakes, but reports about them are rare. This setting may lead to different standards of care, but guidelines are still missing in this field. A systematic review was performed to: (1) assess type and body distribution of pediatric earthquake-related injuries, treatment performed, length of stay, and complications; and (2) identify starting points to define standards of care. PubMed database was researched for papers (1999-2014 period) in agreement with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Statement. Inclusion criteria were: English, French, Spanish, or Italian language and data reported about orthopedic lesions in children (≤18 years old). Reviews, letters, commentaries, editorials, and single case reports were excluded. Two independent reviewers selected articles after abstract and full-text reading. Traumatic injuries caused child hospital admissions ranging from 46.9% to 100.0%; 16% to 53% suffered fractures. Lower limbs mostly were involved. Soft-tissue injuries affected 55% of patients. Debridement and external fixation (EF) were the most frequent surgical treatments. Amputation rates varied from 5% to 11%. This study revealed that field hospitals should be prepared to: (1) treat mainly lower extremities fractures in children; and (2) use especially EF techniques. The presence of orthopedic surgeons familiar with pediatric traumatology should be considered
Performance evaluation of astigmatic beam tracing in the application to picocell scenarios
Danazol suppresses both spontaneous and activated human lymphocyte-mediated cytotoxicity
Danazol is an effective drug in the treatment of endometriosis. Previous reports suggest that it can act by influencing the immune system. Thus, in this study we evaluated whether danazol is able to affect the expression of natural and activated cytotoxicity by human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). A cytotoxicity assay by 51Cr release was performed to determine the effect of danazol on lymphocyte cytotoxic response toward an erythroleukemic cell line (K562). A significant suppression of spontaneous cytotoxicity was observed when lymphocytes were pretreated for 18 h with danazol at the concentration of 5 x 10(-6) M. In addition, danazol could significantly inhibit both IL-2- and INF alpha-activated cytotoxicity at the concentration of 10(-5) M. Following 18 h exposure to danazol, PBL were able to completely recover their spontaneous but not activated cytotoxic potential upon further in vitro incubation (18 h) in absence of the drug. The biological significance of danazol as an inhibitor of immune function under experimentally defined conditions is discussed in relation to its possible role in vivo
Recent improvements in beam tracing
Ray tracing methods together with geometrical optics (GO) and uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) are usually exploited to model electromagnetic field propagation in complex environments, such as urban and indoor scenarios. Ray-optics models calculate the total field impinging on a receiver as ray field superposition. In particular, 3D ray-tracers require high-resolution, site-specific information, which hugely increase the computational cost. The overall accuracy depends on. the amount of detail in the scene that a ray tracer is able to handle, as well as on the algorithms in use for ray tracing, several of which have been proposed. The paper discusses some recently proposed ray tracing techniques
