QPO emission from moving hot spots on the surface of neutron stars: a model
We present recent results of 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of neutron stars with small misalignment angles, as regards the features in light curves produced by regular movements of the hot spots during accretion on to the star. In particular, we show that the variation of position of the hot spot created by the infalling matter, as observed in 3D simulations, can produce high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequencies associated with the inner zone of the disc. Previously reported simulations show that the usual assumption of a fixed hot spot near the polar region is valid only for misalignment angles Θ relatively large. Otherwise, two phenomena challenge the assumption: one is the presence of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities at the disc-magnetospheric boundary, which produce tongues of accreting matter that can reach the star almost anywhere between the equator and the polar region; the other one is the motion of the hot spot around the magnetic pole during stable accretion. In this paper, we start by showing that both phenomena are capable of producing short-term oscillations in the light curves. We then use Monte Carlo techniques to produce model light curves based on the features of the movements observed, and we show that the main features of kHz QPOs can be reproduced. Finally, we show the behaviour of the frequencies of the moving spots as the mass accretion rate changes, and propose a mechanism for the production of double QPO peaks

Jenergeticheskoe sotrudnichestvo Rossii i Evrosojuza: osnovnye napravlenija jevoljucii i sovremennoe sostojanie [EU — Russia energy cooperation: major development trends and the present state]
The article analyzes the development of EU — Russia energy relations through the lens of the evolution of three parameters: the political agenda (the Energy Dialogue), the institutional structure, and the legal modalities. The identification of these three aspects for assessing the evolution of EU-Russia energy relations is the novelty in the author’s approach. This study aims to identify the previous stages and assess the current state of EU — Russia energy dialogue, since they set out conditions for energy cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. This research is based on a political and legal analysis of various documents and employs various international relations theories (including integration theories). The article demonstrates that the EU and Russia have made a transition to the integration agenda manifested in the Energy Dialogue (its current goal is the creation of a common European energy market). The author describes the process of gradual consolidation of transgovernmental and transnational institutions, which leads to depoliticization of cooperation and mutual socialization of the partners. Finally, legal discussions on the development of common rules have become more constructive. In sum, the current situation in EU — Russia energy relations is favourable and positively affects cooperation in the Baltic Sea region
A Writer and a Witch: The Phenomenon of Mariana Romanova in Russian Literature of the 21st Century (2002-2021)
The author discusses the persona of the master of horror, Mariana Romanova (b. 1979), a controversial contemporary Russian writer, who, for some critics, is the “Russian Stephen King”. The author traces Romanova’s life path from the earliest stage of her fascination with extreme sports to her most recent literary, para-literary and non-literary attempts, in which she demonstrates her fascination with the esoteric second dimension, the results of individual experiments with her own consciousness, and her passion for the dissemination of the world’s mysteries. This article constitutes an abridged introduction to the subject matter and poetics created by Romanova, whose individual style bears references to the classics of Russian literature: the astonishing writings of Nikolai Gogol, the fluidity of Nadezhda Teffi’s storytelling, and the mysterious narrations woven by Aleksey K. Tolstoy
The effects of addition of mononucleotides on Sma nuc endonuclease activity
Examination of the effects of mononucleotides on Sma nuc endonuclease originated from Gram negative bacterium Serratia marcescens displayed that any mononucleotide produced by Sma nuc during hydrolysis of DNA or RNA may regulate the enzyme activity affecting the RNase activity without pronounced influence on the activity towards DNA. The type of carbohydrate residue in mononucleotides does not affect the regulation. In contrast, the effects depend on the type of bases in nucleotides. AMP or dAMP was classified as a competitive inhibitor of partial type. GMP, UMP, and CMP were found to be uncompetitive inhibitors that suggest a specific site(s) for the nucleotide(s) binding in Sma nuc endonuclease. Copyright © 2012 Julia Romanova and Maria Filimonova

Boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: A molecular set revealing the interplay between topology and singlet fission propensity
We demonstrate the relationship between the topology (the way in which the atoms are connected), open-shell character, and singlet fission (SF) propensity in a series of diboron-doped anthracenes and phenanthrenes. The study is performed by using high-level wave-function-based quantum-chemical calculations. The results show that the molecular topology plays a crucial role for the optical properties and, respectively, for the SF propensity of the studied compounds. The topology-derived correlations between the structure and properties are interpreted in the light of the Kekulé hydrocarbons concept and serve as molecular design guidelines for the discovery of new SF materials. Finally, several boron-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are proposed as SF chromophores for organic solar cells
