Indoor environmental quality, energy effciency and thermal comfort in the retroftting of housing: A literature review
Building retrofitted to be resilient in the face of future climates may present risks for the health and comfort of the occupants, due to the indoor environmental quality changes involved under current building practices. This chapter is a literature review of recent peer-reviewed papers from a variety of fields identifying such potential hazards. Three topics are investigated: building envelope, HVAC systems and occupants. In terms of the building envelope, resilient buildings currently lead to more airtightness and thermal insulation, which can create humidity problems, accumulation of air pollutants or overheating. HVAC systems, however efficient, can jeopardize the indoor environmental quality, through ducts, filters, noise and maintenance. Respiratory system, eyes and skin conditions can arise with certain retrofitting measures. Moreover, such measures do not necessarily lead to energy savings, partly due to the occupants and their behaviours and partly due to the technologies and their feedback. Human factors should be combined into the development of retrofitting technologies. Thus, interdisciplinarity is needed to develop resilient buildings that will be energy-efficient and also healthy and comfortable for their occupants and the technologies need to be researched as interdependent components to be synthesized in their performance to result in a single enhanced goal.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Indoor Environmen
How airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 confirmed the need for new ways of proper ventilation
Since the first outbreaks of COVID-19, research has focused on how to minimize SARS-CoV-2 transmission indoors. SARS-CoV-2 has three identified transmission routes: (1) direct transmission of virus-carrying droplets between people in close proximity, by coughing, sneezing or talking; (2) indirect transmission via deposited, or transmitted, infectious droplets via surfaces; (3) airborne transmission through virus-carrying, small, airborne droplets, also called aerosols, emanating from infected individuals. To reduce direct transmission from large infectious droplets, physical distancing of individuals is promoted, and for indirect transmissions, the cleaning of surfaces, washing of hands and sneezing/coughing in the elbow are advocated. For people who need or tend to come close to (possibly) infected persons, personal protective equipment is used, including facemasks and gloves. For airborne transmission, the use of ‘proper’ ventilation measures has been recommended to decrease the risk. In this chapter, the background of airborne transmission research is outlined and measures to reduce transmission are discussed. It is concluded that to provide pathogen safe, and comfortable, buildings in the future, we are in urgent need of both a better understanding of how pathogens spread within buildings, and reliable and resilient new ways of ventilating indoor spaces that are flexible, affordable, efficient and effective.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Indoor Environmen
An innovative model for a sustainability report in no-profit organizations
After a review of the literature, the research aims to build a sustainability report for NPOs through a set of economic, environmental and social indicators based on best international practice. Then the report will be applied to a voluntary service centre (CSV) which, in terms of function and organisation, over a wide range, contains all the social and economic environmental variables to be monitored in any NPOs. The findings appear to suggest an innovative model of sustainability report for NPOs with a significant set of indicators that offer a new disclosure of the activity carried on by the organisation. The work is tested only on a limited number of NPOs which can be extended in the future. Then, as there are many entities similar to CSV around Europe, it is necessary also to set up the model in other countrie
Board evaluation in Italian Listed Companies
In the last decade performance evaluation of the Board of Directors hasbecome a best practice at national and international level. Italy is an interesting areaof analysis given the high concentration of ownership that characterizes companies, including listed companies. In this context the choices of governance that affect thelevel of disclosure, for which the expectation is to have a low level of disclosure onthe practice of BE (Board Evaluation). The first purpose of this paper is to present are ́sume ́ on the state of the art in terms of BE for Italian listed companies at 31stDecember 2012, in terms of presence/absence of the practice of disclosure and itsmore or less extensive disclosure. The second objective is to highlight the modalityof adoption of BE and the third is to analyze the relationship between the quality ofBE (measured using as a proxy the disclosure on its setting up) and corporategovernance. The results reveal there are few companies that use board evaluationand that there is a relationship between BE adoption and good governance andbetween the quality of BE and good governance
The sustainability report in the the NPOs. An innovative model
The growing attention toward sustainability report pushed companies, private and public as well, to adopt instruments able to rate sustainability and environmental impact. Many tools can be used to evaluate social communication but the sustainability report is the most complete to explore, measure, understand and communicate the results under this aspect. Through the sustainability report is possible to supply a balanced vision of the sustainability performance of an organization and to understand all the positive and negative effects generated running the activity. To report the activity NPOs as well, has to disclose results and their connection with the surrounding community as social, environmental and economic impact. The voluntary disclosure of Triple Bottom Line information through proper tools, as the sustainability report, The sector vision of the environmental and social report, differently from the sustainability report, does not allow a complete disclosure on social and environmental activity carried on by the companies. Consequently is not fully represented the impact of these activities on the community. Nowadays NPOs use framework, which partially represent the sustainability activities. NPOs as well as for profit organizations have to introduce new reports keen to fill the information necessity of the stakeholder
