    Introduction

In this paper we present the main results of an investigation into the correspondence exchanged among the group of economists active and influential at Cambridge in the first half of the 20th century. Our purpose is to analyse them as a group rather than as individuals, by studying the relations between authors pair-wise. Our main interest lies in tracing the links between various theoretical developments, reconstructing the “referential context” from which certain concepts and ideas emerged. By referential context we mean the common language evolving from the professional and personal relationships established within a group, and self-validated when exposed to external influences. Since language and style germinate and grow in a network of intellectual and personal relations, the material to draw upon to this end consists of published and unpublished material but mainly of the correspondence. Our main point is that these Cambridge authors should be seen as a group rather than a school. The former term does not necessarily imply –as does the latter - adherence to a common body of doctrine, but it does convey the ideas of cohesion and sharing among its components. Rather than constructing a common denominator of the various positions, in this paper we look at the issues they disagreed about in the course of their interchange, which was carried out orally, in published writings and in correspondence. At the same time we look at what they shared, which in the main were values, lifestyles and approach to work. We suggest a metaphor to capture the gestalt of this group – a set of intertwining circles, each intersecting at least one of the others, none intersecting all the others

Sraffa and his arguments against 'marginism'

    No full text
The subtitle of Sraffa's most celebrated work, Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, is prelude to a critique of economic theory. Given that no later work was ever published by Sraffa, we are left to wonder what would have come after the prelude. This paper suggests that the core of the critique might have been the marginal method itself. By carefully distinguishing between published and unpublished work, we shows that Sraffa's opposition to the marginal method follows several threads, some of which were developed over a period of nearly 35 years, such as the belief that economic theory should use only measurable and observable magnitudes, the critique of the 'fundamental' symmetry between production and consumption, and the disagreement with the Marshallian concept of equilibrium. Although none of the arguments reached a stage that Sraffa considered satisfactory enough to be worth publishing, our reconstruction sheds light on his research programme and on otherwise rather obscure passages in his works. Essential oils of three species of scutellaria and their influence on Spodoptera littoralis

The recent literature about the essential oils of different species of Scutellaria have been reviewed (Skaltsa et al., 2000, 2005; Rosselli et al. (2007); Formisano et al. (2011). As far as we know, there is no report on the chemical composition of S. brevibracteata. Recently Raccuglia et al. (2010) isolated seven neo-clerodane diterpenoids from S. hastifolia, three of which showed significant antifeedant activity against Spodoptera littoralis. No studies have been carried out on the volatile constituents of the aerial parts of these two species, while the essential oil of S. orientalis ssp. alpina has been described (Formisano et al., 2011). Recently, the chemical composition of the essential oil of Scutellaria rubicunda Hornem. ssp. linnaeana (Caruel) Rech. has been reported, along with its effect on the feeding and egg laying behaviour of S. littoralis (Rosselli et al., 2007). As a continuation of our studies on species of Scutellaria (Bruno et al., 1996, 1998; Raccuglia et al., 2010), we describe the volatile compounds in the essential oils of S. brevibracteata, S. Hastifolia and S. orientalis ssp. alpina as well as their activity against the feeding and egg laying behaviour of S. littoralis

Produzione per gli dei nel santuario dell'acropoli di Volterra

The findings from the Etruscan sanctuary of the acropolis of Volterra reveal different aspects of production. These activities can be divided into two categories: the sanctuary as a client and the sanctuary as producer in its own right. The first category includes important phenomena, such as the arrival of foreign craftsmen to build the valuable coverings of the main temples of the sanctuary between the end of the 6th and the middle of the 2nd centuries BC. Other specialist commissions include services of fine tableware for ceremonial use, especially cups, which were produced by the flourishing local workshops. The self-produced items include objects manufactured inside the sanctuary itself, which were used for both the construction and maintenance of the buildings and for religious practices and the daily activities of the sanctuary: i.e. handmade pottery, loom weights, small objects and tools manufactured with moulds. New data relating to the production overseen directly by the sanctuary come from the manufacturing areas situated outside the religious space, where recent excavations have identified the partial remains of terracotta kilns as well as metal objects, tools and waste relating to production processes, such as slag and mould sherds

The paper illustrates the jewelry and body ornaments found in the Etruscan sanctuary of the acropolis of Volterra, made mainly of bronze, bone and glass paste and, in a smaller quantity, of gold, iron and semi-precious stone. Some valuable bronze jewels (pendents, pin, fibula) date to the late Villanovian age and they probably testify the existence of a religious site on the acropolis preceding the first stone structures of the sanctuary, built in the Middle Orientalizing period. Many accessories belong to women’s clothing and toiletry and they are connected to the worship of Demeter, revered especially in the western part of the sanctuary. A special case, to which the second part of this article is dedicated, consists of an engraved garnet gem showing the figure of Pan. The presence of this jewel in the sacred area can be explained with religious motives. The argument considers the presence of Pan and the Nymphs as deities belonging to Demeter’s cortege
