Complement-endothelial cell interactions: pathophysiological implications.
No full textThe function of the endothelial cells can be modulated by humoral factors present in the circulation and in the extravascular fluid, including proteins of the complement system. This review examines the multiple interactions between the complement system and the endothelial cells and their functional consequences on inflammation, coagulation and regulation of vascular tone. The implications of these interactions in the induction and progression of the vascular lesions occurring in atherosclerosis, ischemia/reperfusion and xenotransplantation and the possible therapeutic approaches in terms of complement regulation are also discussed
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textThe beta-arrestins (ARRB1 and ARRB2) regulate G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) dependent- and independent-signaling pathways and are ubiquitously expressed. Here we show that ARRB2 mRNA and protein expression is enriched in macrophages, and that it regulates complement C1q expression and cell survival. Basal and Toll-like receptor (TLR) inducible expression of mRNAs encoding the complement subcomponents C1qa, C1qb and C1qc was greatly reduced in bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMM) from ARRB2-deficient, but not ARRB1-deficient mice, while factor-independent survival of ARRB2−/− BMM was enhanced compared to wildtype BMM. TatARRB2(23), a cell-permeable peptide that contains the MAPK JNK-binding motif from within the ARRB2 C-domain, impaired ARRB2 interaction with JNK3, down-regulated C1q expression and permitted factor-independent survival in BMM, thus suggesting that this peptide antagonises ARRB2 function in macrophages. In addition, TatARRB2(23) transiently activated the phosphorylation of JNK and ERK, but not p38 in BMM. These data imply that ARRB2 acts to limit JNK/ERK activation and survival in macrophages, but is required for basal and TLR-inducible complement C1q expression. Given that loss of C1q function is strongly associated with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus, ARRB2 may act to limit the development of autoimmune disease
Is complement factor H a susceptibility factor for IgA nephropathy?
No full textThere is substantial evidence to suggest that complement activation plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy. Mesangial C3 deposition is seen in not, vert, similar90% of patients and polymeric IgA has been shown to activate the alternative and lectin pathways. In addition there have been reports of deficiency and mutations in the serum complement regulator factor H (CFH) in association with IgA nephropathy. In this study we have examined the hypothesis that CFH is a susceptibility factor for IgA nephropathy. In 46 IgA nephropathy patients we undertook genotyping of three CFH SNPS (rs3753394, rs3753396 and rs1065489). There was no significant difference in the allele frequency of these 3 SNPs between the patients and normal controls. In the same group of patients we undertook mutation screening of CFH exons 18–23 using direct sequencing and found no abnormalities. All the patients had a normal serum factor H concentration. In this small cohort of IgA nephropathy patients we have not found evidence to support the hypothesis that factor H is a major susceptibility factor for the disease

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
