Rainfall as triggering factor of slope movements in Southern Italy: Montalbano Ionico case record
The aim of this paper is to define the role of rainfall on landslides in Southern Italy by using hydrological/statistical approach. Among the villages affected by slope movements, Montalbano Ionico has been selected as example of shallow landslides. Its most recent landslide evolution is characterized by low intensity phenomena that can be classified as retrogressive and widening composite rapid earth slide - earth fall. Their high frequency and the caused damage imply a high risk degree. This study confirms how complex and how very diverse are the phenomena that govern the effects of rainfall upon slope stability. Nevertheless, geomorphological analyses focus on the importance of some previous instability marks to predict the future slope evolution by landslides; when these marks exist, the weight of unusually heavy cumulative rainfall on the successive landslide collapse is resulted 30% - 40%
Deep geoelectrical investigation to bound a coastal thermal outflow area
The coastal carbonate Apulian aquifers, located in southern Italy, feed several coastal fresh springs and constitute the main local source of high quality water. The Santa Cesarea Terme cave system is almost unique case of hypogenic coastal spring caves, located along the Adriatic Sea coastline and hosting spring coastal outflow of mixed groundwater (from 22°C to 33°C) mainly of thermal groundwater due to infiltration offshore, in the sea bottom, and pure fresh groundwater due rainfall infiltration.Thermal springs and the outflowsystem are strictly controlled by both the discontinuity network and the karst processes involving the foreland environment. Detailed geoelectrical prospecting were carried out to bound the upflow continental area of this system, considering the geoelectrical effects of deep water mixing with different salinity and temperature close the Adriatic coast
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Rischio di frana indotto dagli eventi di pioggia in Avigliano (Basilicata).
The urban area of Avigliano is widely affected by a conspicuous proneness to landslides which results in heavy damage to buildings and facilities. Some ancient, recent and current mass movements can be recognized which undergo periodica1 total or partial reactivation due mainly to the unstabilizing influence of repeated rainfalls. Landslides are also caused by earthquakes and by unwary human activities. This paper aims at ascertaining the true incidence of rainfall on the landslides occurring in the urban area of Avigliano, by means of rigorous hydrological and statistica1 methods. Five major landslides were selected based on the following criteria: good knowledge of the corresponding geometrical, geomorphological and evolutionary features, availability of an accurate database on landsliding, triggering causes, reactivations occurred in the last decades following heavy rains, availability of hydrological, geognostic, aerial photography and historical data. The role played by rainfalls in the reactivation of the investigated landslides was studied by applying hydrological and statistical empirical models previously used and checked by the authors. The probability grades of the daily cumulative amounts of rain were also determined broadening the concept of rainfall threshold. These grades may also account for hazard thresholds beyond which landslides may be individully reactivated.Published23-30N/A or not JCRope
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
