Islands’ Tourism Seasonality: A Data Analysis of Mediterranean Islands’ Tourism Comparing Seasonality Indicators (2008–2018)
Tourism seasonality as a tourist demand concentration in specific seasons is still challenging for Mediterranean islands’ tourism policies. Overtourism occurs during high tourist seasons, and under-tourism occurs during low tourist seasons, creating undesirable economic, social, and environmental effects on sustainability. However, the imbalance of tourism demand, specifically in fragile territories such as islands, needs specific policies based on scientific evidence. This article examines tourism seasonality dynamics in the Mediterranean islands, thoroughly analysing tourist overnights on island destinations. The adopted methodology uses a set of statistical indicators, such as peak factor intensity, calculated in a time series analysis from 2008 to 2018. The results of this article allow us to understand the importance of the Mediterranean islands to planning a resilient, sustainable, and harmonious tourism policy, using strategies to contain seasonal peaks and create new tourist demand in the low season months
Ecosystems Model Analysis for the EU Tourism Industry in Key EU Countries
The covid-19 pandemic has inflicted a notably harsher economic toll on tourism activities within EU countries compared to other sectors. However, accurately assessing these impacts has proven challenging due to the intricate web of cross-sectoral relationships in tourism economies across the industrial system. Drawing from the industrial ecosystem model recently integrated into the European Union’s industrial strategy, this paper aims to outline a novel configuration of the European tourism industry. The connections between the tourism ecosystem and other industrial ecosystems in four eu nations are delineated by analysing sectoral interdependencies. The findings highlight the diverse, productive links between industrial ecosystems and the tourism sector and the potential ramifications of a tourism market crisis on these industrial ecosystems
The travel and tourism industry has an increasingly central role in countries’ economies due to its ability to contribute significantly to the production of various economic sectors. Despite this growing importance, the literature’s attention to analysing the productive articulations that characterise appears very limited to date. This article presents an overview of the primary lit- erature on the travel and tourism industry and then conducts a quantitative analysis through the Satellite Accounting of Tourism in Italy. Tourism consumption and production in the years 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2019 are compared, and then the effect of the pandemic is analysed by compar- ing the data in 2020. Finally, some policy indications are suggested for strengthening and ex- panding the production connected to international and internal demand
Proboscideans from the upper Miocene localities of Thermopigi, Neokaisareia and Platania (Northern Greece)
In the present article, we study the proboscidean remains from three upper Miocene localities of Northern Greece: Thermopigi (Serres), Neokaisareia (Pieria) and Platania (Drama). The material from the Turolian locality of Thermopigi includes only postcranial specimens. The morphological features of the scapula indicate the presence of the deinotheriid Deinotherium sp., whereas the rest of the specimens are morphologically distinct from Deinotherium and can be referred to Elephantimorpha indet. The material from Neokaisareia consists of a partial skeleton of a single individual and is attributed to the mammutid Mammut sp. (M. obliquelophus?). This taxon is known in Greece from the early–middle Turolian. The Platania proboscidean belongs to the tetralophodont amebelodontid Konobelodon cf. atticus. The genus Konobelodon was already present during the Vallesian of the wider area, but the lower tusk of the Platania shovel-tusker presents some morphological and metrical differences from the Vallesian representative, yet it has also smaller dimensions in its deciduous dentition than the morphologically similar Turolian specimens. The type locality of K. atticus is Pikermi (Attica, Greece), correlated to the middle Turolian, but the known biostratigraphic range of this species covers the entire Turolian. Platania is possibly correlated close to the Vallesian/Turolian boundary and the possible record of this species could document one of its earliest occurrences
