The Italian Mobility Regime: 1985-1997
The paper deals with changes in absolute and relative intergenerational mobility patterns experienced in Italy during the period 1985-1997.
The analyses reported in it are based on data collected, respectively, by the National Survey on Social Mobility carried out in 1985 and the first wave of the Italian Households Longitudinal Survey carried out in 1997. Among the respondents to the 1985 survey all the 1,640 men and the 764 women in the labour force and aged 24-65 at the time of the interview were studied, while from the 1997 survey 2,593 men and 1,750 women, in the same age and labour force conditions mentioned above, were selected.
Intergenerational mobility processes were studied from the perspective of social classes formation and action. Classes of origin and classes of destination were coded according to a seven-fold version of EGP class scheme. Rates of absolute social mobility were studied using standard mobility tables, while the patterns of social fluidity were analysed on the basis of a hybrid version of topological log-linear models. Both absolute and relative aspects of social mobility were studied separately for men and for women.
The main results of the study are as follows. Absolute rates of intergenerational mobility have remained high and substantially stable during the period 1985-1997, with the only remarkable exception of men’s upward mobility, which increased by seven percentage points. On the contrary, the level of inequality in the mobility chances has displayed some more interesting and variegated changes. First, among both men and women, the intergenerational exchange between working classes not in agriculture and the white collars position has become somewhat more difficult in 1997 than it used to be in 1985. Second, the propensity to intergenerational immobility displayed by the sons of farmers and agricultural dependent workers has considerably decreased during the period studied. Third, the barriers separating the sons of agricultural working class from the white collars class have weakened. Fourth, the intergenerational movements between the urban petty bourgeoisie and the service class have become easier. All in all, the paper proves that in 1997 the Italian society is somewhat more open and fluid than it was in 1985
Quanto sono ‘scientifiche’ le scienze sociali? Una discussione intorno a ‘Making Social Sciences More Scientific’ di Rein Taagepera
In this focus article the book "Making Social Sciences More Scientific" by Rein Taagepera is discussed. The book proposes an innovative approach to quantitative modelling, the «quantitatively predictive logical modeling». In the first contribution, the originality of this approach is discussed, through a comparison with three traditional methodological perspectives: qualitative research; rational-choice modeling; empirically-oriented quantitative research. Then, the potential of Taagepera's approach is evaluated with respect to the problem of the relationship between concepts and signs. In this regard, the non-linear, theoretically-driven construction of mathematical models advocated by Taagepera could provide a far more accurate operationalization of the conceptual models developed in the social sciences, which often feature non-linear relationships. Finally, the possibility of integrating Taagepera's suggestion with the traditional quantitative approach - based on the generalized linear model - is discussed, by pointing out potential problems and possible solutions. In the second contribution, Taagepera's critique of the prevalent approach to quantitative analysis of social phenomena is illustrated and commented, along with his proposal to adopt quantitatively predictive logical models as the basic analytical tool of the social sciences. Then, it is argued that, though based on sound arguments, Taagepera's critique of generalized linear regression models is somewhat too severe, since it overlooks some of regression's analytical best strengths
Sociologica. Italian Journal of Sociology Online
Born in 2007, Sociologica" is an on line journal published in English which offer scholars and students the possibility to discuss quickly and seriously the more relevant topics of the discipline. All the articles submitted are subject to a peer review process. The journal publishes essays - usually followed by invited comments by experts - and shorter articles invited as contributions to edited Symposia. Special attention is devoted to the history of sociology, with the publication of articles which reconstructs past debates about books or issues.
One of the main aims of "Sociologica" is to establish a close dialogue between sociology and society, between sociological knowledge and public debate. This is the intention behind Forefront (Primo Piano), that is built with inputs by the journal's editorial staff and readership, who may react to articles published in the journal by posting their contributions on the website.
The international editorial committe - which includes many of the most influential and respected sociologists in the world - is a guarantee of the high standards of scientific value the journal aims to achieve.
