In this thesis with the title »Grayscale« I am discovering a world that is invisible to most people. Not just because it is tiny and hidden, but because our society ignores its existence. People do not know how to take their time anymore nor how to pay attention to nature. I wanted to show that in nature there are patterns that can be noticed in every flower, stone formation and sometimes also in all living creatures. Throughout history those patterns were used in arts and architecture in a way where they try to represent, as closely as possible, the world we live in. The practical part is based on handmade photographs, to which I later added graphic elements, in order to emphasize the mathematical patterns in plants. In the thesis I focus mainly on plants, because of their incredible variety of shapes, which are very pleasing to the eye. I explore the plant world from an artistic perspective, which is unconventional, and I try to bring it closer to the observer through my work
Poly (ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) nanoparticles (PECA-NPs) as possible agents in tumor treatment
Tumor eradication has many challenges due to the difficulty of selectively delivering anticancer drugs to malignant cells avoiding contact with healthy tissues/organs. The improvement of antitumor efficacy and the reduction of systemic side effects can be achieved using drug loaded nanoparticles. In this study, poly (ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate) nanoparticles (PECA-NPs) were prepared using an emulsion polymerization method and their potential for cancer treatment was investigated. The size, polydispersity index and zeta potential of prepared nanoparticles are about 80 nm, 0.08 and −39.7 mV, respectively. The stability test shows that the formulation is stable for 15 days, while an increase in particle size occurs after 30 days. TEM reveals the spherical morphology of nanoparticles; furthermore, FTIR and 1 H NMR analyses confirm the structure of PECA-NPs and the complete polymerization. The nanoparticles demonstrate an in vitro concentration-dependent cytotoxicity against human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cell lines (Caco-2), as assessed by MTT assay. The anticancer activity of PECA-NPs was studied on 3D tumor spheroids models of hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and kidney adenocarcinoma cells (A498) to better understand how the nanoparticles could interact with a complex structure such as a tumor. The results confirm the antitumor activity of PECA-NPs. Therefore, these systems can be considered good candidates in tumor treatment
Hallux Valgus Correction Comparing Percutaneous Chevron/Akin (PECA) and Open Scarf/Akin Osteotomies
Background: Minimally invasive surgery is being used increasingly, including for hallux valgus surgery. Despite the growing interest in minimally invasive procedures, there have been few publications on percutaneous chevron/akin (PECA) procedures, and no studies have been published comparing PECA to open scarf/akin osteotomies (SA). Methods: This was a prospective, randomized study of 50 patients undergoing operative correction of hallux valgus using one of 2 techniques (PECA vs open SA). Data were collected preoperatively and on 1 day, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 6 months postoperatively. Outcome measures include the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Hallux-Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal (AOFAS-HMI) Score, visual analog pain score, hallux valgus angle (HVA), and 1-2 intermetatarsal angle (IMA). Twenty-five patients underwent PECA procedures and 25 patients received SA procedures. Results: Both groups showed significantly improved AOFAS-HMI scores after surgery (PECA group: 61.8 to 88.9, SA group: 57.3 to 84.1, P = .560) with comparable final scores. HVA and IMA also presented similar outcomes at final follow-up ( P = .520 and P = .270, respectively). However, the PECA group showed significantly lower pain level (VAS) in the early postoperative phase (postoperative day 1 to postoperative week 6, P < .001 and P = .004, respectively). No serious complications were observed in either group. Conclusion: Both groups showed comparable good to excellent clinical and radiologic outcomes at final follow-up. However, the PECA group had significantly less pain in the first 6 weeks following surgery. Level of Evidence Level II, prospective comparative study. </jats:sec

The Author Book
Plakáty a pohlednice využívají především motivu prolínání fotografií.
ObhájenoThe topic of my diploma thesis is Author book. In this work I describe story of my hometown Most which was almost completely destroyed during the last century because of brown coal mining. The main reason I chose this topic is that though I spent most of my life in this city I had very limited knowledge how the original old city looked like.
The book is divided into three parts. First part is focused on the history of town which goes to the 12th century. It describes mostly the second half of the 20th century and the city's evolution by primary sources as author's texts and photos. It shows old, dilapidated city after The World War II, its demolition, coal mining and the construction of the new modernistic city carrying the same name just few kilometers away. The second part of the book consists of historical and current photos of important buildings, places and institutions (the main square, the train station, the court, etc.). Third part is an interview with my grandmother who lived through this whole story.
The most important graphic element is the photos intermingling. It symbolizes the mutual connection on the first sight two completely different cities. I connect them into one picture and create an intransigent comparison of history and present.
The book is replenished by other things like posters and postcards which repeat the motive of intermingling of history and presence. I also created another book which consists solely of quotations of period articles that criticized the demolition of the city. My intention was not to create a comprehensive encyclopedia of the city Most but to create a book for people like myself for citizens of Most who know a little about their hometown history but they are seeking to learn more. This thesis is actually a record of my own seeking
Multi-Wavelength Study of a Proto-BCG at z = 1.7
In this work we performed a spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis in the opti-cal/infrared band of the host galaxy of a proto-brightest bluster galaxy (BCG, NVSS J103023 + 052426) in a proto-cluster at z = 1.7. We found that it features a vigorous star formation rate (SFR) of ∼570 M⊙ /yr and a stellar mass of M∗ ∼ 3.7 × 1011 M⊙; the high corresponding specific SFR = 1.5 ± 0.5 Gyr−1 classifies this object as a starburst galaxy that will deplete its molecular gas reservoir in ∼3.5 × 108 yr. Thus, this system represents a rare example of a proto-BCG caught during the short phase of its major stellar mass assembly. Moreover, we investigated the nature of the host galaxy emission at 3.3 mm. We found that it originates from the cold dust in the interstellar medium, even though a minor non-thermal AGN contribution cannot be completely ruled out. Finally, we studied the polarized emission of the lobes at 1.4 GHz. We unveiled a patchy structure where the polarization fraction increases in the regions in which the total intensity shows a bending morphology; in addition, the magnetic field orientation follows the direction of the bendings. We interpret these features as possible indications of an interaction with the intracluster medium. This strengthens the hypothesis of positive AGN feedback, as inferred in previous studies of this object on the basis of X-ray/mm/radio analysis. In this scenario, the proto-BCG heats the surrounding medium and possibly enhances the SFR in nearby galaxies
Plasma homocysteine and folate are related to arterial blood pressure in type 2 diabetes mellitus
The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between homocysteine (tHcy), folate and vitamin B12levels, urinary albumin excretion, and arterial blood pressure in patients with noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Our study was carried out in 33 NIDDM patients (16 men, 17 women) and 16 healthy volunteers as controls (seven men, nine women). Fasting and postmethionine load plasma tHcy levels were assessed, together with folate, vitamin B12, and urinary albumin excretion levels. In NIDDM patients, there were correlations between folate and mean arterial pressure (r = -0.352, P = .046), folate and systolic blood pressure (r = -0.437, P = .013), folate and vitamin B12(r = 0.499, P = .004), tHcy and vitamin B12(r = -0.348, P = .04), In tHcy and In folate (r = -0.404, P = .01), and, lastly, between tHcy, either fasting or postload, and urinary albumin excretion. Patients with elevated tHcy levels had significantly higher diastolic blood pressure (P = .04) and mean arterial pressure (P = .03). Otherwise, higher folate values were associated with lower systolic blood pressure (P = .004) and mean arterial pressure (P = .02). In addition, NIDDM patients with complications presented higher tHcy basal values than the group without complications (P = .003). A particular propensity of such patients towards endothelial dysfunction could explain the presence of correlations between these metabolic parameters and arterial blood pressure
Prognostic and survival-related factors in patients with well-differentiated oligodendrogliomas.
Oligodendrogliomas are brain tumors with unpredictable biological and clinical behavior. Prognostic factors related to survival are still controversial. The present study reviews 50 patients with well-differentiated (WHO grade II) oligodendrogliomas, located in the cerebral hemispheres and operated upon between 1980 and 1998. Prognostic factors studied include patient's age and sex, tumor location and extent, preoperative KPS, and extent of the surgical resection. The Ki-67 and the proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) levels were studied in all patients and some growth factors (GFs), including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and tenascine were examined in 20 patients. The long-term outcome and survival are not significantly correlated with the patient's age and sex, tumor location and extent, preoperative KPS and procedure for resection. Patients with lower Ki-67 and PCNA showed a significantly longer survival time (p < 0.001 and p < 0.019, respectively). Between 45 and 70 \% of the tumors stained positive for one or more growth factors. Interestingly, cases with late recurrences (more than 4 years after surgery) and longer survival are significantly associated to negative GF expression or slight positivity, as compared with the variable and more often moderate immunoreactivity of cases with early anaplastic recurrences and shorter survival time. The presented data suggest that low proliferation indices and negative GF expression are associated with longer survival in well-differentiated oligodendrogliomas
