Gérard-Parizeau.Mr. Gérard Parizeau founded the review Assurances and served as its director for
more than fifty years. In this article, the author pays tribute to Mr. Gérard
Parizeau, his father. He starts by first characterizing him as an exceptionally
open-minded and cultivated man and then goes on to describe the main stages of
his three-pronged career as a professor, insurer, and historian. All of Gérard
Parizeau's writings are passed in review as well as the marks of distinction he has
received from York University, Université Laval, Université de Montréal, the French
Republic, and the Québec government. In conclusion, attention is drawn to the
foundation Gérard-Parizeau
L’assurance dans la tourmente
At the 35th annual meeting of the Association des
November, Mr. Robert Parizeau gave a general overview of the
profound changes that have been affecting the insurance
industry since 1980. The first part of his speech focused on
government reforms, the global market and the emergence of
new conglomerates. In the second part, the author looks at the
immediate future: the arrival of banks in the insurance industry
and the new challenges for intermediaries, such as direct
marketing, new technology, employee training, target market
strategies and new methods of distributing products and
services. Mr. Parizeau states that the near future will not only
bring much change for insurance intermediaries, but also new
opportunities
We proposed to Mr. Gérard Parizeau, founder of our journal, to publish an article on earthquakes which appeared in Assurances in 1966. He was happy to grant us our wish, but did ask that we warn the
readers that many aspects covered in the article have changed considerably
since then, and also that reinsurance will present serious problems
as long as the tax authorities do not agree to set up reserves, spread over the desired number of years, to face the risks in question. We thank Mr. Parizeau, as we are convinced that the subject matter is still current, at least in general. Here are some extracts taken from two articles by the author and which were published in Assurances
The Canadian Market: A Period of Change and Major Reassessment
L’auteur a laissé à
The author first examines the property & casualty insurance
market in 1990 and the economic role of property & casualty
insurance in the context of the deregulation of financial institutions,
compared with the banking system. He then provides a summary of the
industry's view on employment, capitalization, revenues and the role
played by foreign companies. Mr. Parizeau goes on to identify the position of Sodarcan inc.,
which, through a group of professional autonomous subsidiaries,
operates in four specialized sectors: insurance brokerage, actuarial
services and employee benefits, reinsurance brokerage and
reinsurance underwriting.
He concludes with a close examination of a number of issues that
are shaping Sodarcan's business environment
Les défis de l’assurance I.A.R.D.
Discussing the challenges of the Property and Casualty insurance
industry in 1986 is in itself a challenge. Indeed, the insurance industry
is currently undergoint major changes. Whether a broker or an insurer, it is difficult for anyone to give an accurate prediction of the
market's evolution in Canada over the next few years.
In an attempt to pinpoint some of the major problems which we
may face in the future, the author has provided a brief retrospective of
our industry. Mr. Parizeau examines the insurer and insurance
broker concentration and the evolution of the reinsurance market; he
concludes with a look at some aspects of the relationship between the
industry and Government authorities
Electronic processing is a new and complex art. The computer
has become a very valuable working tool with great possibilities. In
the following article, the author deals not only with the extraordinary
services rendered by the computer but also with certain weaknesses
that even the cleverest technicians have been unable to correct.
Mr. Parizeau acquaints us with the numerous studies which
have been presented by specialists associated with the Sodarcan
Group and others who have been instrumental in simultaneously
aiding us to demystify computer systems and to demonstrate to us
the economic import thereof

Reinsurance in Canada: The Decisive Years Ahead
