Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Effect of 17b-estradiol and testosterone treatment on sex steroid binding proteins in the female of the reproductive cycle of the green frog Rana esculenta. Zoological Science 17: 797-803.
In this paper we report the effect of gonadectomy and/or long-term sex steroid (17β-estradiol and testosterone) treatment on binding activity of 17β-estradiol and testosterone binding proteins (EBP and TBP, respectively) in the plasma of the female of the green frog Rana esculenta. Experiments were carried out during different periods of the reproductive cycle when circulating levels of 17β-estradiol and androgens were : 1) low, 2) medium; 3) medium-high; 4) high. This study shows that EBP, but not TBP activity were affected by 17β-estradiol and testosterone treatment. The effect of the hormonal treatment changed according to the period of the reproductive cycle when it was carried out. Both 17β-estradiol and testosterone were ineffective when the circulating levels of 17β-estradiol and androgens were medium-high and high. On the contrary, the maximum effect was registered when circulating 17β-estradiol and androgens were at their minimum levels. Thus, our data indicate that binding activity of EBP apparent changes in response to 17β- estradiol and testosterone treatment varied according to the period of the reproductive cycle, an indication that studies on sex steroid binding proteins regulation should take into consideration the internal endocrine condition before drawing any final conclusion especially in species with a seasonal mode of reproduction
Energy recovery from wastes blends using a two-stage reactor: economic evaluations
This paper convenience power from examines the economic of producing electric some selected wastes by means of a two stage gasification-power generation system with a waste flowrate of 49 t/h. A comparison among RDF, RDF blended with waste oil, MSW from high income countries, bagasse and switchgrass shows that the last two give equivalent results, while the feeding, based on RDF, shows the worst results. As a consequence the sensitivity analysis is carried out by considering bagasse and MSW only. The analyses indicates that a variation of 60 Euro/t for investment cost, 0.04 Euro/ m(3)(STP) for oxygen gas and 7 Euro/t for the manpower cost influences only a little on the performance reached by the wastes. A depreciation value of 8% that ROI calculation indicates possible, allows at accumulating fresh capital for new investment. These data allow at concluding that the use of plants including the proposed two-stage reactor for producing electric power by using as a fuel wastes is promising and convenient

Effect of testosterone and 17b-estradiol treatment on sex steroid binding proteins in the male of the green frog Rana esculenta.
In this paper we report the effect of gonadectomy and/or long-term sex steroid (testosterone and estradiol-17b) treatment and prolonged captivity (two months) on testosterone and estradiol-17b binding proteins (TBP and EBP, respectively) in the plasma of the male of the green frog Rana esculenta. Experiments were carried out during different periods of the reproductive cycle. Gonadectomy and prolonged captivity were carried out in winter, when the spermatogenic activity slowed down and the concentration of circulating androgens was high. Both gonadectomy and prolonged captivity resulted in a significant decrease in TBP binding activity, which could not be restored by the hormonal treatment. On the contrary, when the hormonal treatment was carried out in the early summer, when the spermatogenesis was active but the concentration of circulating androgens was low, a significant increase in TBP binding activity was observed. Neither gonadectomy, nor the prolonged captivity, nor the hormonal treatment affected EBP levels. Our data indicate that TBP apparent changes in response to testosterone and estradiol-17 b treatment varied according to the period of the reproductive cycle, an indication that studies on sex steroid binding proteins regulation should take into consideration the internal endocrine condition before drawing any final conclusion especially in species with a seasonal mode of reproduction
Heavy metals behaviour in a gasification reactor
Sludge coming from cleaning processes of waste-water, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) can be exploited for producing energy because of their heating value. Cleaning the produced syngas is important because of environmental troubles, which are possible if the concentration of noxious compounds is higher than that fixed by law. Besides, noxious compounds erode the turbine in producing electric energy and both temperature and injected gas speed make this erosion heavier. A two-stage gasifier is resulted able to produce a clean syngas in spite of the presence of PVC or other organic compounds containing sulphur or chlorine in the feeding blend, directly. The thermodynamic analysis could be an useful tool for indicating the best way for optimising the performance of the two-stage gasifier with respect on the heavy metals residues into the produced syngas, taking the presence of a Ni catalyst into account. The main results indicate that preheating is not efficient because not all the heavy metals evaporate during this process because the temperature can not exceed 300 °C to prevent any premature cracking of the feeding blend
