Does equipartition hold in HFPs?
Equipartition of energy between relativistic particles and magnetic field is known to be consistent with observations in most of the large size (hundreds of kpc) radio galaxies. Here we discuss whether such a property holds in the smallest and youngest radio sources, the High Frequency Peakers (HFPs). A few sources have small components with a turnover frequency occurring at a few GHz and therefore a direct measure of the magnetic field intensity can be derived from the spectral peak assuming the spectral turnover is originated by synchrotron self-absorption. The field strengths computed in this way are generally in excellent agreement with the equipartition fields. However, a few exceptions have been found, in sources with an extra deficit of photons in the optically thick part of the spectrum as a consequence of free-free absorption (FFA)
Are young radio sources in equipartition?
The knowledge of physical conditions in young radio sources is important for defining the framework of models describing radio source evolution. We investigate whether young radio sources are in equipartition (i.e. minimum energy) conditions by comparing the equipartition magnetic fields of 5 High Frequency Peakers (HFP) with values directly inferred from the spectral peak assumed to be produced by synchrotron self absorption. Multi-frequency VLBA observations of 5 HFPs were carried out in both the optically thick and thin part of the spectrum to determine the spectral shape and angular size of the components for which individual radio spectra were obtained.
We find that the magnetic fields measured using observations agree well with those obtained by assuming equipartition, which implies that these sources are in minimum energy condition and the turnover in their spectra is due probably to SSA. In two source components, we found that the peak of the spectrum is caused by absorption of a thermal plasma instead of being due to SSA. The magnetic fields found in the various components range from 10 to 100 mG. In the presence of such high magnetic fields, electron populations with rather low γ emit in the GHz-regime. In one source, we detect low-surface brightness extended emission at low frequency located ~30 mas (~50 pc) from the main source. This feature may be related to either an earlier episode of radio activity or a discontinuous start of the radio activity (sputtering). By comparing our data with previous VLBA observations, we estimate the hotspot advance speed to be in the range 0.1-0.7c and kinematic ages of a few hundred years
Radio spectrum evolution and magnetic field in extreme GPS radio sources. The case of RXJ1459+3337
Aims.The knowledge of the properties of the youngest radio sources is very important in order to trace the earliest phase of the evolution of the radio emission. RXJ1459+3337, with its high turnover frequency (~25 GHz) provides a unique opportunity to study this class of extreme objects. Methods: High-sensitivity multi-frequency VLA observations have been carried out to measure the flux-density with high accuracy, while multi-frequency VLBA observations were performed, aimed at determining the pc-scale structure. Archival ROSAT data have been used to infer the X-ray luminosity. Results: The comparison between our new VLA data and those available in the literature shows a steady increment of the flux-density in the optically-thick part of the spectrum and a decrement of the turnover frequency. In the optically-thin regime, the source flux density has already started to decrease. Such a variability can be explained in terms of an adiabatically-expanding homogeneous radio component. The frequency range spanned by our VLBA observations, together with the resolution achieved, allows us to determine the source size and the turnover frequency, and then to derive the magnetic field directly from these observable quantities. The value obtained in this way is in good agreement with that computed assuming equipartition condition. A similar value is also obtained by comparing the radio and X-ray luminosities
High Frequency Peakers: The faint sample
We present a sample of sources with convex radio spectra peaking at frequencies above a few GHz, known as ``High Frequency Peakers" (HFPs). A ``bright" sample with a flux density limit of 300 mJy at 5 GHz has been presented by Dallacasa et al. (2000). Here we present the ``faint" sample with flux density between 50 and 300 mJy at 5 GHz, restricted to the area around the North Galactic Cap, where the FIRST catalogue is available. The candidates have been observed with the VLA at several frequencies ranging from 1.4 to 22 GHz, in order to derive a simultaneous radio spectrum. The final list of confirmed HFP sources consists of 61 objects
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
