Once Again About the Troublesome Etymology o f the Nome łochynia
In the present paper the author puts forward a new proposal of the etymology of the botanic name tochynia 'vaccinium uliginosum'. Thus she enters a discussion with what has been settled so far in this matter: by F. Sławski, namely that (w)łochynia owes its name to young twigs which are shaggy (hairy) (SISE V 132), 2. by A. Bańkowski who claims that (w)łochynia means Gypsy’s (wołoska in Polish) berry, since Gypsies fed on the fruit of this plant (JP 1986 pp. 306-313), 3. by A. Steffen who says that (w)łochynia is a borrowing from the Ukrainian hluchyńa and means 'drunkard' (JP 1968 pp. 136-138), by B. Matuszczyk who proves that łochynia (regarding włochynia as a secondary name) means as much as 'boggy', because we mean here a plant which grows in peat bogs and in boggy forests. The morpheme łoch- which we come across in such toponymie names as Łochyńsko, Łochynia, Łochówek, Łochnica denoting water tanks or sites situated nearby water (cf. Middle-High German lache 'pool, boggy area'), and the suffix -ynja, present in this name, served most often to create the names of plants
A Novel Approach for Non-Invasive Continuous In-Line Control of Perfusion Cell Cultivations by Raman Spectroscopy
Continuous manufacturing is becoming more important in the biopharmaceutical industry. This processing strategy is favorable, as it is more efficient, flexible, and has the potential to produce higher and more consistent product quality. At the same time, it faces some challenges, especially in cell culture. As a steady state has to be maintained over a prolonged time, it is unavoidable to implement advanced process analytical technologies to control the relevant process parameters in a fast and precise manner. One such analytical technology is Raman spectroscopy, which has proven its advantages for process monitoring and control mostly in (fed-) batch cultivations. In this study, an in-line flow cell for Raman spectroscopy is included in the cell-free harvest stream of a perfusion process. Quantitative models for glucose and lactate were generated based on five cultivations originating from varying bioreactor scales. After successfully validating the glucose model (Root Mean Square Error of Prediction (RMSEP) of ∼0.2 g/L), it was employed for control of an external glucose feed in cultivation with a glucose-free perfusion medium. The generated model was successfully applied to perform process control at 4 g/L and 1.5 g/L glucose over several days, respectively, with variability of ±0.4 g/L. The results demonstrate the high potential of Raman spectroscopy for advanced process monitoring and control of a perfusion process with a bioreactor and scale-independent measurement method
Media image of Martyna Wojciechowska based on the example of Woman at the end of the world TV programme
The article is mainly concerned with the issue of autopresentation. The author explains the fundamental character of creating a media image by Martyna Wojciechowska. The author achieves this aim by analyzing selected episodes of Woman at the end of the world (Kobieta na krańcu świata), a Polish television programme, which is carried by Martyna Wojciechowska. Accumulated data enable to state, that Wojciechowska takes a three different roles: a traveller, journalist and a woman. In the programme, the traveller describes the main characters (another women) in a positive way as a strong and courageous. Created image of another women bears a resemblance to presented image of Wojciechowska. Traveller creates thereby her media image, because she uses the similarity strategy
THE STUDY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MARKET SQUARE AT ŻELECHÓW
The study of the development of the market square at Żelechów
offers an example how to develop a market square in a small town
with a town-hall situated in the centre.
Żelechów is a town in Siedlce voivodship. The first mentions o f
Żelechów date back to the 13th century. A baroque church from
1741 and a clasicist palace built in 1762—1790 have preserved
their original form until to-day.
The centre o f Żelechów’s layout is a market square o f 110 x 110 m.
Four main streets come out from the centres of market frontages
and at the intersection of their axes there stands a clasicist town-hall
from the turn o f the 18th and 19th centuries. The view of the
town-hall has the form of a quadrangle with a square courtyard.
The ground floor held originally 4 vestibules corresponding to four
streets in the middle of the frontages and a number of vaulted
quarters which used to be market stalls. Huge enscarpments flanking
the eastern elevation were added in ca 1914. Market frontages
are made of wooden and bricked houses from different periods:
one can find there 19th-century buildings of historic merit, buildings
which represent examples of traditional construction, contemporary
buildings which play either commercial or living-in functions
as well as dwelling and other houses with no major historic
values. All houses are one- or two-storeyed. The market square
is stone paved. There is not much high verdure there.
The aims of the market’s development scheme are as follows:
— to restore to the market its old function by arranging the market
and its partial roofing,
— to add buildings which will have a similar character and scale
as the existing ones, '
— to make a parking lot for cars and to choose the most convenient
place for long-distance buses (the so-called PKS buses);
at present the bus station is situated in the town-hall; correspondigly,
to assign one part of the market for cars,
— to plant more trees inside of building blocks surrounding the
market square and also to plant rather big but extensive flower-
beds (15 x 15 m) on the market square,
— to use different kinds of material to pave the market. The market’s
floor might be made of three materials: flag stones, granite
cobbles and road clinker. Road clinker should be arranged in
belts square with market frontages running from the corners
of the town-hall’s walls and emphasizing the axiality of the
market demarkated by streets.
Part o f the market assigned for a parking lot is planned to be
made of granite, while its recreational part — o f flag stones.
The final result of the works is shown on the drawing ,,The Market’s
Region — a Design Study”, which, according to the author,
shows the best functional and compositional development of the
market
“Witaj w świecie sprytnych pomysłów!” Poradnik Ikei jako sposób na autopromocję
The company catalogue is a tool intended for the promotion of this company and the building
of relationships with consumers. The author of this article discusses Ikea’s company catalogues in
detail. The publications that were explored are not only a “well-arranged list of products” but they
also contain textual realisations of selected journalistic genres. These notes and commentaries
inform the recipient about their company itself and their purpose is to create a positive image
of the company in the minds of Ikea’s consumers. Catalogues are also a realization of the model
of the genre of a guide. The sender gives advice to the reader and engages in a kind of dialogue
with him or her. By creating a handbook Ikea promotes itself as a master and an expert in the
field of interior design
Grammatical Information in S. B. Linde's Dictionary
The subject of the article is a description of the grammatical information in Edition I of S. B. Linde's Dictionary (1807-1815) that is a contribution to a characteristics of the lexicographic methods used by the author of the Dictionary. The information here has a grammatical-semantic character; hence many of its elements do not belong to a formal description of the language. An example of subordinating grammatical information to semantics is Linde's introduction of the Greek category of medium for a description of Polish verbs. In the article attention is also paid to the bilingual (Latin-Polish) grammatical terminology, the syntax of information and lack of uniformity in abbreviations and spelling
„Biblia Paulińska” (2008) wobec tradycji polskich (katolickich) przekładów Pisma świętego
The aim of the paper is to illustrate translators’ strategies adopted for rendering in Polish the so-called Pauline Bible, the latest (2008) Catholic version of the original Script. This translation is a response to the challenges posed by contemporary culture; it is meant to convey Biblical ideas in language appealing to the cntemporary recipient. At the same time, the translators and editors engaged in this task had to take into account the deeply rooted in the Polish culture traditions of translating the Bible and rendering its message: 1) the tradition of faithful philological translation, 2) the tradition of the Polish Biblical translation style (established by the Rev. Jakub Wujek), 3) the tradition of the Millennium Bible (1965). The author uses selected samples to illustrate how the Pauline Bible, departing from the method of literal translation, manifested in, e.g., reflecting Semitisms, does not abandon the principle of fidelity and remains consitent with the idiosyncrasies of the Polish Biblical style. This is in accordance with the overall intention to reconcile fidelity with comprehensibility. The paper is an introduction to further research into issues involved in the said translation
