Giant condyloma of Buschke-Loewenstein in association with erythroderma

    No full text
The Buschke-Loewenstein tumour is regarded as a type of verrucous carcinoma occurring on anogenital mucosal surfaces. The tumour is locally invasive but displays a benign cytology and rarely metastasizes. It is associated with human papillomavirus types 6 and 11. We describe a case of Buschke-Loewenstein tumour occurring in a 61-year-old man which behaved in a locally aggressive manner and was associated with human papillomavirus type 16 and erythroderma which proved resistant to treatment. The patient refused surgery and therapy with interferon alpha was ineffective. Chemotherapy with systemic cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil produced a partial response before the patient succumbed from gram-negative septicaemia

Loathsome Jews and engulfing women metaphors of projection in the works of Wyndham Lewis, Charles Williams and Graham Greene

Biases held by artists have been a constant source of controversy in appraisals of their works, most recently in critiques of such authors as H. L. Mencken and Paul de Man. Should the belief systems of these thinkers be taken into account in assessing the value of the works which they made public? Andrea Freud Loewenstein here undertakes to address this crucial issue. At the heart of her study is an examination of the figures of Jew and woman in the works of three British male authors written between 1929 and 1945. While instances of misogyny and anti-Semitism were not uncommon in the literature of the period, Loewenstein argues that a hatred and fear of women was often the dominating preoccupation of their work, from which stemmed the intertwined and closely related loathing of Jews. Basing her interpretations on biographical information and on the close analysis of a large body of fiction by each author, Loewenstein reconstructs the psychological system through which each one envisions the world, showing how Jews and women function in their texts, and in each individual psychopathology, as a representation of the Other. Ranging far beyond a narrow study of three authors, Loewenstein situates the works studied in the context of the history of Jews in Britain, concentrating on recent historical scholarship on Britain and the Jews in the 1930s. She questions the widespread belief that the British government was a friend to the Jews and shows, as evident in the double-talk and hypocrisy behind some British governmental policies, that Britain instead actively collaborated in the Jews' destruction. To provide a greater context for her argument, Loewenstein presents a timeline of the history of the Jews in Britain. Firmly grounded in a range of disciplines, Loathsome Jews and Engulfing Women is a masterful blend of history, psychology, and literary criticism

Tumor de Burschke-Loewenstein na região Perianal – Um Caso Clínico

The Burschke-Loewenstein tumor, also called Giant condyloma acuminata or verrucous carcinoma of the anogenital region, is a papillomatous proliferation, which predominates in the glans and foreskin of uncircumcised men. Also, can affect the urethra, vulva and perianal region. In its pathogenesis has a role, the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The Buschke-Loewenstein tumor is a rare low-grade malignancy, derived from squamous cells. Tends to appear in men with more or less 30-50 years of age, presenting itself as a local mass. Its transformation into invasive carcinoma is approximately 1 / 3 of cases documented. This is an anogenital verrucous carcinoma, associated with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), especially, among these, the serotype 6 and 113. It is postulated that the HPV oncoprotein E6 and E7 act by inactivation of cell cycle regulators, is the first step toward malignancy. The treatment is surgical. We present a case of a male patient, with 50 years of age, with a vegetative lesion of 11cmx4cm size, located in the perianal zone.

Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment to Evaluate People with Addictions

    No full text
Background. The LOTCA (Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment) battery is a cognitive screening test which is widely used in occupational health. However, no work has been found that explores its use in addiction treatment. Objectives of Study. To explore the convergent validity of LOTCA with neuropsychological tests that assess related cerebral functional areas. Methods. The LOTCA, along with a battery of neuropsychological tests, was administered to a sample of 48 subjects who start a treatment by substance or gambling addictions. Findings. A correlational pattern was observed of a considerable magnitude between the effects of the LOTCA scales and those of some neuropsychological tests, but not with others. There is barely any convergence in measures with memory and executive function tests. Relevance to Clinical Practice. There is a lack of research applying test of occupational assessment to populations of patients treated by addictive behaviors. The LOTCA seems to be a reliable and valid test for preliminary screening of function in certain cognitive areas, easy, and quick to use (around 30 minutes). However, it must be supplemented with other tests for a full and ecological assessment of patients. Limitations. An incident, small-size sample. Recommendations for Further Research. New studies are needed to explore the applicability, diagnostic validity, and whole psychometric quality of the test in addiction-related treatment

To mark the eightieth birthday of Professor Bedřich Loewenstein (on 20 June 1929) a workshop was held in Prague on 8 June 2009, on the topic ‘The History of Faith in Progress’. At the workshop, Loewenstein’s most recent large book, Víra v pokrok: Dějiny jedné evropské ideje (Faith in Progress: A History of One European Idea, Prague 2009; originally published as Der Fortschrittsglaube: Geschichte einer europaischen Idee, Gottingen 2008), was comprehensively discussed, with the author in attendance. In addition to Loewenstein’s autobiographical contribution, the following eight articles are reflections on Loewenstein’s book and his life’s work as an historian
