New perspectives on Web search engine research
No full textPurpose–The purpose of this chapter is to give an overview of the context of Web search and search engine-related research, as well as to introduce the reader to the sections and chapters of the book. Methodology/approach–We review literature dealing with various aspects of search engines, with special emphasis on emerging areas of Web searching, search engine evaluation going beyond traditional methods, and new perspectives on Webs earching. Findings–The approaches to studying Web search engines are manifold. Given the importance of Web search engines for knowledge acquisition, research from different perspectives needs to be integrated into a more cohesive perspective. Researchlimitations/implications–The chapter suggests a basis for research in the field and also introduces further research directions. Originality/valueofpaper–The chapter gives a concise overview of the topics dealt with in the book and also shows directions for researchers interested in Web search engines

No full textCelem artykułu jest analiza polskiej polityki zagranicznej realizowanej w ramach ONZ w okresie zimnej wojny. Jako case study posłużył rok 1960, kiedy Polska była członkiem Rady Bezpieczeństwa ONZ. Reprezentowana była wówczas przez ambasadora Bohdana Lewandowskiego, którego rolę również przybliżono w niniejszym artykule. W tym okresie Polska starała się wspierać nowo powstałe państwa i ich niezależność, co uwarunkowane było nie tylko ogólną polityką obozu socjalistycznego, ale przede wszystkim historycznymi doświadczeniami kraju. Tak też było, kiedy niepodległość uzyskało Kongo. Przedstawiono, jak reprezentant Polski, ambasador Bohdan Lewandowski, w swoich działaniach w Radzie Bezpieczeństwa starał się wspierać rząd w Kongu. W artykule ukazano także rolę, jaką odegrał Dag Hammarskjoeld, sekretarz generalny ONZ, oraz kontrowersje związane z ONUC - Operacją Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych w Kongu, tj. misją pokojową wysłaną do Konga na prośbę kongijskiego rządu. Przeanalizowano pokrótce politykę i postawę innych państw Rady, mających wpływ na przebieg i zakończenie samego kryzysu oraz misji, która miała go zażegnać. Artykuł przybliża problem podziału w Radzie Bezpieczeństwa, kluczowość stanowiska sekretarza generalnego, ale przede wszystkim polskie starania na rzecz Konga i utrzymania przez to państwo niepodległości i niezależności.(abstrakt oryginalny)The purpose of the article is to analyse the Polish foreign policy in the UN during the Cold War. The author has chosen the year 1960 for her case study, as at that time Poland was a member of the UN Security Council and was represented by Ambassador Bohdan Lewandowski. Furthermore, the article shall elaborate on the role played by Ambassador Lewandowski. In the period in question, Poland strived to support newly emerging countries and their independence, which was not only determined by the overall policy of the socialist camp but even more so by Poland's entire historical experience. This was also the case when Congo gained independence. The author shall present the significant role played in the Security Council by Polish Ambassador Bohdan Lewandowski, who sought to support Congo through his activity. The article shall also elaborate on the role played by UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjoeld and on the controversies surrounding ONUC, the UN peacekeeping mission deployed to the Congo upon the request of the local government. Furthermore, the author shall analyse the policies and positions of the other countries sitting in the Council that influenced the course and conclusion of the crisis and the mission that was to address it. The article focuses on the problem of divisions in the Security Council, the key importance of the Secretary-General's position, but most importantly it presents Poland's efforts to support Congo and help it maintain independence and sovereignty.(original abstract
