Reply to "Comment on 'Correlation between configurational entropy and structural relaxation time in glass-forming liquids' "
In this Reply we show that contrary to the statements of Goldstein, the empirical function we proposed [D. Prevosto, M. Lucchesi, S. Capaccioli, R. Casalini, and P. A. Rolla, Phys. Rev. B 67, 174202 (2003)] for the pressure and temperature dependencies of the configurational entropy is mathematically and physically valid. Specifically we demonstrate that the condition of equal second derivatives, necessary for the configurational entropy to be a function of state, has physically reasonable solutions without the necessity of imposing implausible constraints
Evidences of macromolecular chains confinement of ethylene-propylene copolymer in organophilic montmorillonite nanocomposites
A random ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPM) functionalized with grafted diethylsuccinate groups was melt blended with increasing amount (to 20 wt%) of organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) to prepare nanocomposites with different morphologies as evidenced by XRD and TEM analysis. All the nanocomposites were treated with boiling toluene that did not extract a significant amount of EPM. The increase of not-extracted EPM with the increasing quantity of OMMT suggested strong interactions of the polymer chains with the inorganic substrate. The DSC measurements of nanocomposites and the corresponding insoluble residues revealed a higher T, values with larger amount of inorganic particles. The dielectric relaxation analysis confirmed the evidence of strong interactions among montmorillonite and the polar diethylsuccinate groups for the macromolecules trapped due to the presence of the inorganic layers. The results were discussed with reference to their relevance as an evidence of nanoconfinement at polymer clay interface and correlated with the clay basal distance variation due to the intercalation process.
On A Conjecture Of Lovász Concerning Bricks. Ii. Bricks Of Finite Characteristic
In (M. H. de Carvalho, C. L. Lucchesi, and U. S. R. Murty, 2002, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 85, 94-136) we established the validity of the main theorem (1.1) for solid bricks. Here, we establish the existence of suitable separating cuts in nonsolid bricks and prove the theorem by applying induction to cut-contractions with respect to such cuts. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).851137180de Carvalho, M.H., Lucchesi, C.L., Murty, U.S.R., On a conjecture of Lovász concerning bricks, I. Energy dissipation of a thin elastoplastic tube under torsion and compression
An analytical computation is performed of the energy dissipated by a thin tube made of a work-hardening material, subjected to both a static compressive load and a dynamic torsional load
