Europe: its culture and constitutional unity. History of Europe and its modernity in the thought of Werner Sombart

    No full text
“Unity of culture and constitution in Europe” is a collection of three essays of Werner Sombart which consist of three sketches explaining the story of European cultural unity from medieval period to the twentieth century. He composed these essays probably through dictation in the autumn of 1940 just few years before his death. They remained unpublished until 2005, his son Nicolaus then took lead to publish them for the first time in original German language and therefore they are availabile to read and Pierangelo pitched in for the Italian edition which was published by Bibliopolis (Sombart, 2005). We are therefore dealing with reflections (Iannone in Antonini, 2006) which are relatively less known (Sombart, 1978) (Barbieri, Bertolino, Caroselli, Luzzato, 1964) (Bertolino, 1944) in comparison to the other publications of the author but nonetheless are equally important. In fact, they offer critical insights about the undoubted actuality of Europe which go beyond any specific contents. The key to the proposed readings is based on the analysis of Schiera, revisited in the light of further critical considerations

Proposal of a multi-method decision support system for the fashion retail industry

Fashion and Apparel (F&A) market, characterized by fast changes in trends and demand, by short product life-cycles and by broad assortments, requires a responsive/demand driven Supply Chain (SC) focused on products availability, real- time information sharing and speed in matching customers requests (Iannone et al. 2013). In this context, the presented paper shows the results of a three-year research project by firstly analysing the overall structure and characteristics of a traditional SC in this sector Iannone et al. (2015) in order to identify the most critical aspects and processes. From a risk analysis it emerged that the correct Time Management, intended as the ability of being responsive to market fluctuation, is the most criti- cal target for fashion business. In this context, the presented work proposes a refer- ence framework for the definition and subsequent optimisation of the physical and informative flows, which is based on a deviation analysis of demand and an adjust- ing feedback loop. In last years, the wide spread of e-commerce and mobile pur- chasing is deeply changing the retailing industry leading companied to adopt a new integrated strategy, called Omni-Channel Retailing. The management of both phys- ical and mobile channels not simply means managing an additional on-line demand but requires the actual integration of all the processes of planning and execution in order to optimize performances. With these perspectives, the proposed framework has been revised and extended in order to represent a company implementing this new strategy and, after the definition of a suitable set of Key Performance Indica tors (KPIs), allowed us to evaluate how it may impact on the performances of a traditional SC. The integration of all these analysis and the correct evaluation of the defined set of KPIs may represent a useful system for supporting fashion companies in the strategic decision making process

Werner Sombart and the global society. Anticipations from a classic author of sociology

    No full text
The article examines the most salient works in which the sociologist Werner Sombart saw the dimension of globality as a social element, constitutive of mo- dernity and its future. The aim is to understand the role of globality, as an idea and a phenomenon, in the constitution in all aspects of society (economic, political, cultural, anthropological). The Works to which the article refers show a global society, one that goes from the time of Sombart to the present day, as the author had already envisioned in all their potentialities and criticalities

    Network Society. What is it?

    No full text
What is the network society? Roberta Iannone provides a complete and articulated definition of the concept of “network” that renders, in a clear and effective way, the descriptive content of the analysis, giving us at the same time a key to depict the contemporaneity. This perspective is enlarged and enriched by the interesting contributions of Cristina Marchetti, Laura Mariottini, Emanuele Ferreri and Manuela Ciprì.The key questions of the present volume are why and how to read society as a network. At the base of these interrogatives, there are at least three reasons: 1. First, the fact that the network has colonized the common use of the language and the collective imagination. Everyone talks about networks in different areas (politics, economics and health care, among others) and referring to different concerns (conformity, cooperation, multilingualism, social control and the crisis of the welfare state, to name but a few). In each situation, it assumes the most varied features: from a device that saves, to a mesh that traps. In these aspects, the role of the InterNet ‒ as the “network of networks” ‒ emerges. It becomes a metaphor and, at the same time, a support both for the Network Society and the contemporary societies even when creating new divisions – as exemplified by the concept and the phenomenon of the digital divide. 2. The second reason is that the study of the network is essential for the description of some of the processes through which we explain contemporary society since the late ‘70s: the postmodern and post‐industrial society; the fluid and flexible social processes; the organizations as cooperative and anti‐bureaucratic systems; the actors as results of multiple identities and as points of intersection of different social circles; the end of the fixed and immutable order of hierarchies and the advent of the governance; the birth of the “global village”; globalization; the mobility and transnationalism; the new forms of solidarity and horizontal communities; the transition from welfare state to the welfare society, etc. 3. The third reason is related to the implications the network society has in terms of linguistic practices and discursive production of space during the process of construction of both individual and collective identities. The movements of the individuals in the geographic space, resulting from the globalization processes of migration and mobility, generates a process of dislocation that involves the loss of the relationship between natural, socio‐cultural and geographical boundaries, while producing a partial relocation of old and new symbolic productions. Consequently, at the base of the postmodern processes of identity construction we cannot find the traditional relationship, related to socio‐territorial aspects, but a more complex net, that involves transnational and multilingual discursive practices. Therefore, to analyse society as a network means not only to respond to the “actual needs”, but also to highlight the “opportunities” and the “utilities”, and to investigate if society is really relational or only perceived as such – as exemplified by these processes and the related concepts

From high school to university: Impact of social networking sites on social capital in the transitions of emerging adults

    No full text
In recent years, the huge success of social network sites (SNSs) has principally been determined by their ability to link people and their respective relationships. These relationships allow people to access different resources, information, emotional and social support, entertainment, as well as providing them with the opportunity to extend personal social ties. This paper investigates the way in which SNSs are used by emerging adults, defined as young people in the transition from adolescence to adulthood, and particularly those in their last year of high school or at university. The study focuses on different types of social capital and on the use of SNSs by emerging adults during this transitional phase in maintaining and developing relationships. Data collected from a questionnaire administered to 927 emerging adults show, first of all, the relevance of different types of social capital (bridging, bonding and maintaining) based on the student’s position (high school, university first-year student or university student). Second, the data analysis indicates that SNSs can be conceived as part of functional organs that support emerging adults in their ability to connect and to be connected to a social network and to develop and maintain it over time
