The prototype opto-mechanical system for the Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes
Published: July 4, 2017The Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes is a proposed low-cost, large-area, next-generation experiment for the detection of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays via the atmospheric fluorescence technique. The proposed design involves the deployment of several hundred large field-of-view fluorescence telescopes on a regular grid of several thousand square kilometers in ground area. This paper describes the optical design of the prototype telescope, as well as its mechanical support structure.D. Mandat, M. Palatka, M. Pech, P. Schovanek, P. Travnicek, L. Nozka, M. Hrabovsky, P. Tunability effects in photonic band gap structures infiltrated with liquid crystals
Tunability effects in photonic band gap structures infiltrated with liquid crystals (LC) were discussed. A strong degree of tunability was obtained by acting on the optical anisotropy of the liquid crystal. The reflection and transmission parameters versus wavelength were also evaluated by varying the pretilt angle of the LC
First results from the full-scale prototype for the Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes
The Fluorescence detector Array of Single-pixel Telescopes (FAST) is a design concept for the next generation of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) observatories, addressing the require- ments for a large-area, low-cost detector suitable for measuring the properties of the highest en- ergy cosmic rays. In the FAST design, a large field of view is covered by a few pixels at the focal plane of a mirror or Fresnel lens. Motivated by the successful detection of UHECRs using a prototype comprised of a single 200 mm photomultiplier-tube and a 1 m2 Fresnel lens system [Astropart.Phys. 74 (2016) 64-72], we have developed a new full-scale prototype consisting of four 200 mm photomultiplier-tubes at the focus of a segmented mirror of 1.6 m in diameter. In October 2016 we installed the full-scale prototype at the Telescope Array site in central Utah, USA, and began steady data taking. We report on first results of the full-scale FAST prototype, including measurements of artificial light sources, distant ultraviolet lasers, and UHECRs.Toshihiro Fujii, Max Malacari, Justin Albury, Jose A. Divalent impurity ions in potassium tantalate studied by EPR
EPR results of potassium tantalate single crystals eloped by Co2+ ions as well as new results of our continuous studies of KTaO3. Cu single crystal have been submitted. Divalent impurity ions substitute for Ta5+ in the octahedron position in the KTO3 crystal and oxygen vacancies are required to compensate the extra charge of Ta5+. The Cu2+ ions associated with oxygen vacancies form only axial centres (included exchange coupled pair centre), the symmetry axes being along cubic directions. New axial centre of Co2+ in the crystal of KTaO3: Co have been studied

Thermal treatment and light illumination effects in EPR spectra of KtaO3:Cu
In order to understand the manner of incorporation of oxygen vacancies into perovskite structure oxides, KTaO3 crystals containing Cu2+ impurity ions were investigated following thermal treatments in atmosphere of H-2, air, and vacuum. The results of thermal treatments were controlled by EPR. The influence of light illumination on copper centres in these crystals was studied also. The thermal treatment and light illumination effects in EPR spectra of Cu impurity centres are studied for the incipient perovskite-like ferroelectric KTaO3 single crystals. It was found that thermal treatment at similar to 950 degrees C in hydrogen atmosphere and in vacuum strongly depresses EPR signal of both types of Cu2+(1) and Cu2+(2) axial centres substituting Ta5+ in the B-sublattice positions. Subsequent high-temperature treatment in air restores EPR signals of Cu2+ centres, but changes the ratio between Cu2+(1) and Cu2+(2) centres concentration. These effects, together with UV light illumination effects observed for T Cu+ thermal and photo-induced transformations of the Cu impurity centres
