No full textA petition from 1450 and a series of ducal letters and papal and archbishops’ acts provide us with information about a quarrel between some religious women living in the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria in Valle of Milan. At stake was the role of the abbess. Every avenue was pursued, violence, both psychological and physical, and diplomacy. The aim of this paper is to deepen the knowledge of the following points: ecclesiastical, of course, as the event shows the more or less canonical ways that led to obtaining a religious position; cultural, as the documentation asks us to think about the writings of religious women; social, as we understand relationship dynamics both inside and out of those osmotic places which were cloisters; political, as from the narrow corridors of a small monastery the stage opens on the large scene of the Sforza duchy

Get PDFAim of the paper is to offer a view on medieval solutions to foreigners’ needs taken in northern and central Italy. The paper dwells on timeless necessities: the need for the foreigner to find, in a temporarily or stable way, help and therefore places to sleep, eat, give birth, raise children, socialise, pray, and be buried. The variety of these solutions is emphasized: although the culture of assistance was shared in medieval society, not all places elaborated the same solutions. The paper tries to understand the reasons for it: helping the foreigner depended not only on the Christian practice of mercy, but also on economic policies and on the system of international relationships among political potentates. Different contexts are compared: Rome and Venice, first of all, as destination points of both economical and religious migratory flows; and then centres of Lombardy, Emilia, Veneto and Tuscany regions, also characterized by foreigners presences, both passing through and definitive. The comparison shows how the care planning for foreigners, implemented mainly through hospitals and confraternities, in some cases tended to favor coordination, especially from the 14th century (Siena, Florence, Milan); in other cases, however, the assistance for foreigners remained fragmented but not less effective (Rome, Venice)

Lettori di Albertano. Qualche spunto da un codice milanese del Trecento
Get PDFAlbertanus of Brescia (c. 1190s - c.1250s) is nowadays considered by international historiography as one of the key figures of the Middle Ages. Judge, politician, writer, preacher, he was the author of three moral-didactic treatises and five confraternity sermons that enjoyed great diffusion, both in their original Latin and in subsequent translations in many European languages. he’s been attributed the pedagogical and ethical project of building the medieval civis, member of the religious community and of the state as well. Through the lens of a codex of the Trivulziana Library, belonged in the late 14th century to two Milanese brothers, we’ll try to check the success of this project, deepening some aspects of the catchment area and of the transmission channels of his works. In particular, they will be taken into consideration social and political environments, persistence of Latin, women’s fruition.
