Application of Thermochromic Liquid Crystal to Rotating Surfaces
Encapsulated thermochromic liquid crystal (TLC) can be used to measure the surface temperature of stationary or rotating bodies. However, some research workers have reported a “rotational shift”: When the temperature of a rotating body is measured by thermocouples and TLC, there is a difference between the two sets of temperatures, and this difference increases with increasing rotational speed. Two research groups (Camci and Glezer in the USA, and Owen, Pilbrow, and Syson in the UK) have independently examined the effect of speed on TLC applied to the surfaces of rotating disks. The USA group used narrow-band TLC on a disk of 305 mm diameter rotating up to 7500 rpm measuring the surface temperature using an infrared (IR) sensor. The UK group used wide-band TLC on a disk of 580 mm diameter rotating up to 7000 rpm, measuring the temperature with an IR thermal imager. Both groups used the so-called hue technique to evaluate the temperature of the TLC and concluded that, even for centripetal accelerations in excess of 104 g, there is no significant effect of rotational speed on either narrow-band or wide-band TLC. It is suggested that the “rotational shift” observed by some researchers was probably caused by thermal-disturbance errors, which affected the thermocouples, rather than by changes in the TLC.</jats:p

Heparin Increases HLA-G Levels in Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome
Objectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the HLA-G serum levels in Primary Antiphospholipid Syndrome (PAPS) patients, its impact on clinical and laboratory findings, and heparin treatment. Methods. Forty-four PAPS patients were age and gender matched with 43 controls. HLA-G serum levels were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results. An increase in soluble HLA-G levels was found in patients compared to controls (3.35 (0–22.9) versus 1.1 (0–14), =0.017). There were no significant differences in HLA-G levels between patients with and without obstetric events, arterial thrombosis, venous thrombosis, or stroke. Sixty-six percent of patients were being treated with heparin. Interestingly, patients treated with heparin had higher HLA-G levels than ones who were not treated with this medication (5 (0–22.9) versus 1.8 (0–16) ng/mL, =0.038). Furthermore, patients on heparin who experienced obstetric events had a trend to increased HLA-G levels compared to patients who were not on heparin and did not have obstetric events (5.8 (0–22.9) versus 2 (0–15.2) ng/mL, =0.05). Conclusion. This is the first study to demonstrate that serum HLA-G levels are increased in APS patients. We also demonstrated that heparin increases HLA-G levels and may increase tolerance towards autoantigens

TRIMETAZIDINE MR EFFECTS ON THE PARAMETERS OF 24-HOUR ELECTROCARDIOGRAM MONITORING AND HEART RATE VARIABILITY
Aim. To assess the effects of the four-month trimetazidine MR therapy on the parameters of 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring and heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with stable coronary heart disease (CHD).Material and methods. This prospective, non-randomised study, with the inclusion of 66 consecutive patients who had stable CHD and stable stress test results, investigated the effects of trimetazidine MR therapy on the parameters of 24-hour ECG monitoring and HRV.Results. Trimetazidine MR did not markedly affect the 24-hour, daytime, or nighttime levels of heart rate. Trimetazidine MR therapy was not associated with any substantial changes in frequency and time-domain HRV parameters or in the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias. However, there was a significant reduction in the number of patients with ST segment depression (from 66,7% to 43,8%; p<0,001) and in the duration of ischemic episodes (from 10 (6,2;21) minutes to 7,42 (5;12,3) minutes (p=0,025)).Conclusion. Adding trimetazidine MR to the treatment of patients with stable CHD provides an additional beneficial antiischemic effect
TRIMETAZIDINE THERAPY INFLUENCE ON HEART RATE VARIABILITY IN PATIENTS WITH STABLE ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE
Aim. To study the influence of metabolic cytoprotector trimetazidine on the heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with stable ischemic heart disease (CHD).Material and methods. Into the simple, prospective, non-randomized trial totally 50 patients included with stable CHD, continuously showed positive stress test on treadmill. HRV was investigated on the short episodes of recording (the device and software of MEDASS, Russia) before and after 4-month therapy by trimetazidine 35 mg BID in supine position and during the 10-minute active ortostatic test. The temporal and frequency parameters of HRV were assessed.Results. HRV in CHD patients is decreased and the prominence of the decrease depends upon gender, age, diabetes mellitus and ejection fraction. After the shift from supine to upright position with normal reaction of heartrate there was decrease of RR-interval moda and normalized value in the area of high-frequency component, the vegetative balance index increased, as the centralization index, that shows on the decrease of parasympathetic influence. While being treated by trimetazidine the HRV parameters were increased in the temporal area – variational amplitude between maximal and minimal values, also there was decrease (improvement) of vegetative balance index and index of regulatory systems tension.Conclusion. Trimetazidine in patients with stable CHD increases the decreased at baseline HRV and normalizes the reaction on ortostatic test. Its effects can be explained by the decrease of ischemia, oxidative stress and improvement of nitric oxide bioavailability
The flow field around a rotor in axial descent
Measurements of the flow field around a model rotor descending axially into its own vortex wake have been performed using particle image velocimetry (PIV). At low descent rates, the expected cylindrical down-flow structure below the rotor is observed. At slightly higher descent rate, the flow enters the so-called vortex ring state (VRS) where the vorticity from the rotor accumulates into a toroidal structure near the rotor tips, and a large recirculation zone forms above the rotor disk. In the VRS, the flow below the rotor shows a significant upwards component, with a small up-flow zone penetrating right up to the rotor disk. Measurements show there to be a range of descent rates just before the onset of the VRS over which the flow may be interpreted to be in an incipient VRS condition. In this range, analyses of individual PIV measurements indicate that the flow near the rotor intermittently switches between the down-flow topology found at lower descent rates and the flow topology found in the fully developed VRS. The frequency of excursions of the flow into the VRS topology increases as the descent rate of the rotor is increased until, at high enough descent rate, the flow remains locked within its toroidal state
