This chapter provides the results of research based on archival resources, most of which unpublished, and a number of bibliographic resources, aimed at providing descriptions regarding the use of Piasentina stone, the Eocene breccia used throughout the area of eastern Friuli. Following an overview of the use of Piasentina stone from ancient times to the modern age, as indicated by the resources, an exhaustive framework is provided regarding the use of the stone in civil architecture, religious architecture, spontaneous architecture and urban social spaces. This chapter describes the processing operations of Piasentina stone, the Eocene breccia used throughout eastern Friuli, according to the methods currently in use. There are detailed descriptions of the phases of transport from the quarry to the processing facility, as well as the processing steps from storage to primary shaping, and from semi-finished to finished products. Precise references are made to the customary processing techniques used today, including those specific to this material, both manual and mechanized. The work is the result of an ongoing exchange of information with the clients

Il riferimento alle maestranze e al lavoro in cava e nei laboratori, precede la descrizione degli strumenti del mestiere e delle fasi della lavorazione, che vedono una ininterrotta continuità nei mezzi e nei modi dal Medioevo a metà ‘900. In this chapter, the topic is the traditional processing of Piasentina stone, the Eocene limestone used throughout the area of eastern Friuli, with a detailed description of the handworking techniques still used today in the workshops, based on skills handed down from generation to generation. A reference to the skilled trades and to the work in the quarries and the workshops is followed by a description of the tools of the trade and the processing stages, based on techniques which continued nearly unchanged in both means and method from the Middle Ages to the mid-1900s. The support of testimonies by the workers themselves, of studies by local scholars, and of bibliographic references on the material culture of this Alpine region has made it possible to define a framework that aims to be exhaustive on the subject

In questo caso viene descritto l’evolversi delle tecniche di estrazione della pietra piasentina, brecciola calcarea eocenica usata in tutta l’area del Friuli orientale, nella continuità del rapporto uomo–cava caratterizzante la vita della valle di Torreano, dove l’estrazione e la lavorazione della pietra piasentina è documentata dall'inizio del ‘700. Il quadro descritto prende avvio dalle caratteristiche dell’estrazione prima dell’avvento della meccanizzazione, secondo le tecniche tradizionali con cunei di legno, per poi procedere riferendo dell’introduzione degli esplosivi, a metà ‘800, fino ad arrivare alle caratteristiche di estrazione successive alla meccanizzazione, in particolare all'introduzione della tagliatrice a catena e del filo diamantato. This chapter explains the evolution of the extraction techniques of Piasentina stone, the Eocene breccia used throughout the area of eastern Friuli, characterizing a continuous way of life in the Torreano valley centered on its relationship with the quarries, where the extraction and processing of Piasentina stone has been documented since the 1700s. The chapter begins with the traditional techniques based on wooden wedges, used before the advent of mechanization, and continues with the introduction of explosives, in the mid-1800s, followed by the methods developed after mechanization, in particular cutting by means of chain saws and diamond wire saws. Continuous contact with the client helped to contextualize the research and created a valuable exchange of information and points of departure for further study

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
