RESISTIVE MODES AT A MAGNETIC X-POINT

    No full text
The characteristic time of (incompressible) resistive modes in the neighbourhood of an X-point in the absence of external forcing is found to scale, when normalized on the Alfven time, as (epsilon/\n epsilon\)(-1) with epsilon the ratio between the Alfven and the resistive time. In X-point configurations with oblique separatrices, the mode time-scale becomes faster as the angle between the separatrices decreases. When this angle becomes of the order of \ln epsilon1),the(epsilonlnϵ-1), the (epsilon \ln \epsilon(-1) scaling breaks down. Similar to the case of a resonant magnetic line configuration, resistive modes can be driven unstable by the inhomogeneity of the current density

    Debenedetti e «L’Unità»: la ‘Verticale’ 1946-47

    No full text
The article focuses on the literary notes ("Verticale") prepared by Giacomo Debenedetti for «L’Unità» in the years 1946-1947, examining them both from the philological side (to attest the degree of reliability of the published texts and to clarify their relationship, on the one hand with the specimens provided by Debenedetti, and on the other with the «manuscripts» from which, as revealed by the author, they were cut out), and from the historical and exegetical side (to attest the specific weight that the «notes» have in the critical path and in the author's intellectual biography)

    Rileggendo Debenedetti (Equicola, Colocci)

Computational investigation of structure, dynamics and nucleation kinetics of a family of modified Stillinger-Weber model fluids in bulk and free-standing thin films

In recent years, computer simulations have found increasingly widespread use as powerful tools for studying phase transitions in wide variety of systems. In the particular and very important case of aqueous systems, the commonly used force-fields tend to offer quite different predictions with respect to a wide range of thermodynamic and kinetic properties, including the ease of ice nucleation, the propensity to freeze at a vapor-liquid interface, and the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition. It is thus of fundamental and practical interest to understand how different features of a given water model affect its thermodynamic and kinetic properties. In this work, we use the forward-flux sampling technique to study the crystallization kinetics of a family of modified Stillinger-Weber (SW) potentials with energy (ε) and length (σ) scales taken from the monoatomic water (mW) model, but with different tetrahedrality parameters (λ). By increasing λ from 21 to 24, we observe the nucleation rate increases by 48 orders of magnitude at a supercooling of ζ = T/Tm = 0.845. Using classical nucleation theory, we are able to demonstrate that this change can largely be accounted for by the increase in Δμ, the thermodynamic driving force. We also perform rate calculations in freestanding thin films of the supercooled liquid, and observe a crossover from surface-enhanced crystallization at λ = 21 to bulk-dominated crystallization for λ ≥ 22.Fil: Gianetti, Melisa Mariel. Concentrazione plasmatica degli ormoni tiroidei, caratteristiche della fibra e attività dei follicoli piliferi in capretti angora: effetti della supplementazione con favino (Vicia faba minor)

SUMMARY - Angora goats from parturition and their kids after weaning, fed mixed hay ad libitum and grazing pasture, were supplemented (T) or not (C) with horse bean. T3 and T4 plasma concentrations resulted higher in T kids in comparison with C (9.36±2.05 vs 3.76±2.37 ng/mL for T3 and 14.55±1.83 vs 9.44±1.37 g/dl at 155 d age), and affected by treatment (P<0.05). The supplementation increased fibre length (T 5.82±0.13 cm, C 5.16±0.14 cm, P<0.001) and the ratio active: total secondary follicles (T 0.96±0.01, C 0.91±0.02, P<0.05), and decreased secondary fibre diameters (T 16.54±0.35 m, C 18.09±0.31 m, P<0.01)

Life Cycle Assessment of Coating Treatments for Automotive Magnesium Parts

    No full text
The use of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for materials/process/product design is becoming increasingly important in the coating treatments industrial, where the methodology may be used to supply management strategies with particular attention to the choice between alternative processes. Automotive is one of the sectors where the LCA methodology is extensively employed because of the problem of environmental impact reduction related to fuel consumption that has primarily to be solved; in the same sector it is also important the possibility of extending the useful life of components by means of proper coating processes. Following these main lines, this paper presents the preliminary activities performed for NANOMAG ("Development of Innovative Nanocomposite Coatings for Magnesium Casting Protection" - Growth Programme n. 40548), a research project sponsored by the European Commission whose aim is to develop innovative solutions with an environmental friendly life-cycle perspective
