    The European M&A industry: Trends, patterns and shortcomings

    No full text
    This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the process of European mergers and acquisitions. We characterize the main features of M&A activity in Europe in the period 2001-2007. We review the process of M&A regulatory integration and patterns of activity. Most European M&As still take place among domestic firms, although cross-border transactions are larger in value and have been slightly increasing, especially in regulated industries. Transactions are likely to be friendly, partially negotiated via public tender offers and private deals, and paid in cash, especially for smaller deals. Competing bids are still fairly rare and less likely to be completed. Target shareholders obtain an average premium of around 20% and this premium is slightly declining with deal size. Regulatory differences are large, particularly in the application of takeover regulations, and uncertainty persists in the predictability of the national regulatory agencies.European cross-border; domestic merger; acquisitions; M&A trends;

    Unemployment Duration Before and After New Deal

    A major active labour market policy - the New Deal for Young People (NDYP) - was introduced throughout the UK in 1998. We examine its effects on unemployment duration by estimating hazard functions for unemployment outflows before and after its introduction. We add value to existing evaluations in the following ways. First, we examine previously unused administrative data for Northern Ireland. Second, we examine NDYP effects at all unemployment durations. Third, we estimate separately by gender. Fourth, exits to employment, education and training and other benefits are identified separately. Since NDYP's introduction, young people are 25-50% less likely to experience year-long unemployment spells, with increased probabilities for all types of exit. NDYP is intended, however, to largely eradicate long term youth unemployment. We ask why this has not been the case in Northern Ireland.unemployment duration, new deal, hazard functions, young people

    The European Green Deal: New Opportunities for Port Cities?

    No full text
    With the European Green Deal made public last December, the new European Commission took the first steps to transforming Europe into the first climate neutral continent by 2050. The Green Deal offers a wide range of climate policies and measures that directly affect European cities and citizens. Whereas port cities are high polluters and important economic concentrations, they are not mentioned in the European Green Deal as such. However, to make the ‘’effective and fair transition’’ that the Commission aims for, port cities could make a difference as they concentrate key economic and industrial facilities and are key to the EU’s long-term economic competitiveness.History, Form & Aesthetic

    Atomic diffusion in solar-like stars with MESA

    No full text
    Context. The stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) is public and is widely used by the community. It includes the possibility of taking several non-standard processes such as atomic diffusion into account. Even if the effect of gravitational settling is considered a standard ingredient in stellar modelling today, this is not the case for radiative accelerations. The specific treatment of atomic diffusion along with the radiative accelerations has never been compared with other stellar evolution codes. Benchmarking these codes is important because improved accuracy is required in order to analyse data from present and future space missions, such as the Kepler, Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, and PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars missions. Aims. The aim of this paper is to compare MESA models including atomic diffusion (with radiative accelerations) with models computed with the Montreal/Montpellier stellar evolution code and with the Code d’Evolution Stellaire Adaptatif et Modulaire (CESTAM). Additionally, we assess the impact of some MESA options related to atomic diffusion. Methods. We calculated atomic diffusion, including radiative accelerations, following the abundance profiles of 14 elements with MESA models. This was then compared with 1.1 and 1.4 M⊙ models computed with the Montreal/Montpellier and CESTAM codes. Various tests of MESA options for atomic diffusion were also carried out by varying only one of them at a time. Results. We find that the abundance profiles of the considered elements in the MESA models compare rather well with the models computed with the two other codes when atomic diffusion options are carefully set. We also show that some options in MESA are crucial for a proper treatment of atomic diffusion

    Jacob Viner’s Reminiscences from the New Deal (February 11, 1953)

    This paper presents and reproduces an unpublished oral history interview given by Jacob Viner in 1953. The interview released by Viner for the Columbia Oral History Project gives us a valuable opportunity to throw light on his advisory activity during the New Deal Era. In our introduction we attempt to make a critical appraisal of Viner's reminiscences and to state the contribution they can provide to our general knowledge of the period. In addition, we also attempt to find out some biographical and interpretative elements useful to understand Viner’s own vision and his contribution to important economic policy processes during the New Deal.
