Geological outcrops are of good quality along the foreshore and cliffs in Crozon Peninsula allowing the study of Paleozoic series of the Armorican Massif. The sedimentary and faunal evolution of this area is part of the history of the Gondwana margin and records the opening of the Rhéic Ocean, eustatic variations and paleogeographic migration from high latitudes in the Ordovician to a sub-equatorial position in the Carboniferous. Geological outline of the Armorican Massif is briefly exposed and integrated in a climatic, eustatic and tectonic global framework. Afterwards, the second part deals with formations of the Crozon Peninsula since the Ordovician to Upper Devonian with their faunal and sedimentological characteristics. In the third part, the main outcrops visited during the fieldtrip of the Paleozoic French Group (GFP) during the Congress « Strati 2010 » are described; these outcrops illustrate some aspects of the armorican geological history

Insights into the geometry of the Crozon fold-and-thrust belt of Central Armorica (Brittany, France)

The extremely well preserved coastal sections of the Crozon peninsula, located in the westernmost part of the Armorican Massif of Brittany (France), display Palaeozoic sediments that rest unconformably on Late Proterozoic (Brioverian) sequences. These sediments are deformed during the Variscan orogeny by the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous contraction-dominated ‘Bretonian event’. We present a new line-drawing which was made of the 1800 m long Kerguillé – Lostmarch cross-section in the southern part of the Crozon peninsula, exposing the multilayered Plougastel Formation (quartzitic sandstones and phyllites). The section shows a generally steep architecture with five large-scale, rather symmetrical upright folds and three distinct zones with a high density of centimetre to multimetre-scale, disharmonic, chevron-type folds. These small-scale chevron folds show mostly a vertical geometry similar to the larger folds. However, also N-verging asymmetrical folds are present. In the northern part of the Crozon peninsula, the Pointe des Capucins – Ancien Fort de la Fraternité cross-section also exposes the Plougastel Formation. Darboux & Plusquellec (1981) describe large-scale, open, symmetric folds and centimetre to multimetre-scale, SE-verging, asymmetrical folds in this section. A new structural mapping in the northern continuation of this section, shows the presence of N-verging asymmetrical folds with an associated axial planar cleavage. We consider the presence of a local décollement between the section of Darboux & Plusquellec (1981) and its northern continuation, with N-verging folds below and SE-verging folds above the décollement. The structure of both the northern and southern cross-section is typical in a fold-and-thrust belt with décollement levels along rheologically weaker sedimentary layers. Our new observations question the direction of the thrusting episode during the Bretonian event which is considered to be SE-verging by Ballèvre et al. (2009).status: Publishe

First report of the mitrate Mitrocystella (Echinodermata, Stylophora) in the Middle Ordovician of the Crozon Peninsula, Brittany (France)

The mid-Ordovician mitrocystitid mitrate Mitrocystella incipiens was one of the most widespread stylophorans in the high latitude Mediterranean Province, with occurrences in the Armorican Massif (France), the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) and the Prague Basin (Czech Republic), all restricted so far to the late Darriwilian (Hustedograptus teretiusculus Zone). The description of this taxon in the Corréjou Member (Postolonnec Formation) of the Crozon Peninsula (western Brittany, France) not only extends its spatial distribution within the Armorican Massif, but also its stratigraphic range into the mid-Darriwilian (Didymograptus artusZone). The remarkable preservation of the new material and associated sedimentological evidence both suggest rapid burial by storm deposits
