From Ecology to Urbanism: Urban Metabolism Genealogies and Perspectives in Urbanism Theory and Practice

    No full text
As early as the ‘70s of the last century, the Belgian ecologist Paul Duvigneaud studied Brussels as an ecosystem. His original work combined ecosystem ecology with regionalist and urban planning tradition and it is considered one of the first metabolism studies of real cities. Afterwards, more specialised studies on urban metabolism, both in Brussels and abroad, flowed into industrial ecology, which focuses on the urban energyand material flows, narrowing the interest on the urban space and environment. Driven by the debate on sustainability, more recently, there has been a revival of the concept of urban metabolism in both urbanism theory and practice in Brussels. Nevertheless, it remains to better understand how and to which extent the discipline of urbanism can actually draw from and bring to ecology and urban metabolism studies. This essay/article, firstly, explores the origin, contribution, and legacy of the urban ecosystem and urban metabolism studies by Duvigneaud and the Brussels School. Secondly, it recalls the current resurgence of the concept in recent urbanism debate and highlights some current outstanding issues in Brussels. Finally, it proposes a comparison with the research in North America academic context, in particular around the ‘landscape urbanism’ discourse. Results show that, if the latter seems building on the original contribution of ‘ecology’ to urbanism – namely, the overcoming of traditional dichotomy between urban and rural, city and landscape, etc. – current urban metabolism applications in Brussels, focusing largely on urban flows and impacts, fall short in providing conceptual leap forward the understanding of their spatial organization andecology, and thus overlook the heritage of Duvigneaud and the Brussels School.iiTSEinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Genealogies of the Ecological Issues in the Italian Discourse on Città Diffusa. Territories and Debates

The concepts of metabolism, ecosystem, and circular economy are currently challenging the discipline of urbanism. As the shift from linear to circular production-consumption patterns seems to be ultimate for reducing the externalities of our urban environments and to meet stricter environmental targets, the search for sustainable territorial metabolism has become imperative for our metropolitan areas. This publication questions the discipline of urbanism in relation to the challenge of territorial metabolism and combines theoretical contributions with cutting edge design proposals for European metropolitan regions. It synthetizes two years of intensive research by design on Barcelona, Brussels, and Venice Metropolitan areas conducted jointly by the Laboratory on Urbanism, Infrastructure and Ecologies of the Faculty of Architecture of Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Università IUAV di Venezia and the Laboratori d’Urbanisme de Barcelona (ETSAB–UPC) in the framework of an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership

The region located between the Senegal and the Casamance rivers hasa long history of the presence of Western white men. Although thecharacters and situations modeled by the ‘White Ethnic Group’ overtime have been very varied, there are characteristics that are repeated, continuities associated with the ambiguity of social status, genderrelations or economic specializations, on the boundary between both local and global levels. The paper explores the durability of a culturalboundary, suggesting avenues of research from the figure of lançados. The analysis shows indications, repeated parallels between the effects ofvariations in boundary conditions on the collective ‘White’, swaying betweenmaintaining their identity and integrating into indigenous communities. The author believes that a long-term perspective would help understandthe current articulation of contingents of cooperation volunteerswho come to the region, an understanding that could be extrapolated toother areas on the continent

Revelations about the shape of the city

"Forma urbis: five cities under suspicion", by Josep Parcerisaoffers a retrospective on the recent urban history offive Spanish cities: Malaga, Granada, Tarragona, A Coruñaand Palma de Mallorca. Based on his findings in Trieste,Italy, the author reveals that the general configuration of acity is not necessarily the result of systemic discussions ora master plan. The urban shape is, on the contrary, determinedby the echo of smaller decisions, as specific as thecreation of a new street, a plaza or a building. A complete set of documents for each of these cities, includingan essential graphic support, gives us the keys fortheir modern construction. Moreover, the book theorizesthat forma urbis is no longer a simplistic interpretation ofan existing city. It has become though a design opportunityfor change, in which how to merge the existing city and thenew city remains the main question.Peer Reviewe
