The papers in this special issue of Quality & Quantity are mostly based on presentations from the international conference of the Italian Statistical Society (SIS): Statistics and Demography: the legacy of Corrado Gini, that was held in Treviso (Italy), on September 9–11, 2015, to remember the founder of the Italian school of statistics 50 years after his death

The Identification of regional convergence clusters: asymptotic versus bootstrap inference

    No full text
In a recent study Corrado, Martin and Weeks (2005) test for regional convergence across the European Union allowing for an endogenous selection of regional clusters using a multivariate test for stationarity. The number and composition of clusters is determined by the application of pairwise stationarity tests of regional differences in the logarithm of per capita Gross Added Value (GVA). Given that the time series are relatively short, there are potential problems in basing inference on asymptotic results for stationarity tests. To circumvent this problem we bootstrap the stationarity test and explore the robustness of the cluster outcomes. In general our results show that the size distortion which afflicts the asymptotic tests, and resulting in a bias towards finding less convergence, is resolved when we apply the bootstrap generated critical values

Abstract. In this paper we give a combinatorial characterization of the Corrado Segre variety of type {n,m} in terms of its incidence structure of points and lines

Diagnostic and genetic aspects of the Brugada and other inherited arrhythmias syndromes

    No full text
Doctor Wilde, presenting on behalf of himself and Dr Eckardt, discussed the role of invasive and noninvasive tests for risk stratification of Brugada syndrome. Doctor Hiraoka, presenting on behalf of Y. Yokoyama, M. Takagi, N. Aihara, K. Aonuma, and the Japan Idiopathic Ventricular Fibrillation Study Investigators, further discussed the diagnostic criteria for the Brugada syndrome. Doctor Antzelevitch examined the hypothesis that amplification of spatial dispersion of repolarization in the form of transmural dispersion of repolarization underlies the development of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias associated with inherited ion channelopathies including the long QT, short QT, and Brugada syndromes. Doctor Corrado discussed the relationship between channelopathies and heart muscle diseases. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserve
