Seed production of a subalpineFestuca nigrescens-Agrostis capillaris semi-natural grassland in the eastern Italian Alps
Studying the seed production of semi-natural grasslands helps to understand their regeneration processes and to evaluate the
possibility of collecting seed useful for ecological restoration. In a subalpine Festuca nigrescens – Agrostis capillaris meadow,
the development of the main grasses’ seed production and the standing seed yield at meadow maturity were studied.
The inflorescence size was in the lower part of the variation range reported in previous studies. The seed viability was average to
high and durable. The biological floret site utilization was mostly above 50%. With 458 fertile stems m22, the seeds produced
(all seeds produced up to the time of the meadow maturity) by the main grasses were 21,000m22, of which 77% were of
A. capillaris and 81% were viable. On a 3-year average, the standing seed yield (seeds present on the plants, i.e. produced minus
shed seeds) at meadow maturity was 6953 seedsm22. Amount and composition of the produced seeds were affected mainly by
the variability among years of the fertile stems density of the perennial grasses and the annual hemiparasite Rhinanthus freynii.
The percentage of produced seeds which formed the standing seed yield was affected mainly by the collecting date
Dealing with organizational legacies of irresponsibility
Organizations are increasingly confronted with critical questions and concerns posed to their legacies of irresponsibility, in other words, the decisions and actions taken by past generations of managers deemed unethical and immoral and with enduring negative social and environmental consequences in the present. However, there is limited guidance for organizations and their managers on how to deal with such legacies. The purpose of this paper is to offer directions on how organizations can approach their troubled pasts. We draw from the literature on transitional justice to develop an approach that organizations can use to deal with their legacies of irresponsibility. This paper contributes to the literature on historic corporate social (ir)responsibility and provides practical guidance for organizations to address the sins of previous generations of managers.<br/
The interaction of syringomycin stuctural analogues with biological and model membranes
The haemolytic activity and pore forming activity on artificial membranes was evaluted for syringomycin SR, its deschloro analogue SRH and its linear form (obtained by hydrolysis of the lactone macrocyle). The deschloro derivative showed a considerable decrease in the activity, while the linear form was inactive
Repairing ontological security: the collective sensemaking of affective stakeholders in online communities
Our study investigates how affective stakeholders – emotionally invested but organizationally powerless individuals – collectively make sense of unexpected organizational events in online environments. Drawing on a netnographic analysis of a National Hockey League fan forum, we examine how Edmonton Oilers supporters responded to the unexpected trade request of star player Chris Pronger. We find that the disruption of fans’ ideal, expected future triggered intense ontological insecurity, which they attempted to repair through collective temporal sensemaking. Fans cycled through three phases – rumour, confirmation and trade – each marked by distinctive uses of past, present and future narratives to reconstruct meaning and regain a sense of control. Our findings contribute to stakeholder theory by theorizing affective stakeholders as unique actors in organizational life. We also expand temporal sensemaking theory by showing how multitemporal narratives function as coping mechanisms in virtual communities. Finally, we emphasize the empirical value of studying collective sensemaking in digital spaces, where discursive interactions unfold in real time.</p
History and the micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities
Research SummaryThe capacity to manage history is an important but undertheorized component of dynamic capabilities. We argue that the capacity to manage the interpretation of the past, in the present for the future, is a critical ability that informs a firm's ability to successfully enact changes needed to adapt to disruptive technology. We identify and elaborate three specific cognitive interpretations of history—history as objective fact, history as interpretive rhetoric, and history as imaginative future-perfect thinking—and demonstrate how these different views of history can be mobilized by managers to sense, seize, and reconfigure around opportunities made available by understanding the invisible thread of technology.Managerial SummaryHistory is typically understood to be a constraint on a manager's ability to effect change. A firm's past is assumed to create inertia in routines and structures that compromise a firm's ability to change. We show how acquiring a broader understanding of the role of history can improve a manager's ability to enact organizational change. Studying the evolution of technology over time and across products allows managers to sense opportunities created by technological change. Using different narrations of the past as continuous or disruptive can improve a manager's ability to motivate or resist change. Using the past to construct convincing scenarios of the future, managers can enroll key stakeholders in the industry to support a strategic direction that advances the firm's strategic goals
Structure-activity studies of syringomycin
The presence of chlorine in the C-terminal amino acid in the lipodepsipeptide syringomycin, as well as as the integrity of the lactone macrocycle, were shown to be important for the for the antifungal activity
The interaction of syringomycin structural analogues with biological and model membranes
Syringomycin (SR) structural analogues, deschloro- syringomycin (SRH) and its linear form, SRL, obtained by hydrolysis of the lactone ring, were compared in the membrane permeabilization activity. SRH was less active than the chlorinated SR in haemolytic activity assay and on liposomes. In the latter case, the influence of the presence of sterols was also observed. The lactone ring opening caused the complete loss of the membrane activity
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
