Why Vitamin C Could Be an Excellent Complementary Remedy to Conventional Therapies for Breast Cancer
The most frequent cancer in women is breast cancer, which is a major cause of death. Currently, there are many pharmacological therapies that have made possible the cure and resolution of this tumor. However, these therapies are accompanied by numerous collateral effects that influence the quality of life (QoL) of the patients to varying degrees. For this reason, attention is turning to the use of complementary medicine to improve QoL. In particular, there are increased trials of intravenous injection of vitamin C at high doses to enhance the antitumor activity of drugs and/or decrease their side effects. This review intends to underline the anticancer mechanisms of vitamin C that could explain its efficacy for treating breast cancer, and why the use of vitamin C at high doses could help patients with breast cancer to enhance the efficacy of pharmacological therapies and/or decrease their side effects

Cholesterol and sphingolipid enriched lipid rafts as therapeutic targets in cancer
Lipid rafts are critical cell membrane lipid platforms enriched in sphingolipid and cholesterol content involved in diverse cellular processes. They have been proposed to influence membrane properties and to accommodate receptors within themselves by facilitating their interaction with ligands. Over the past decade, technical advances have improved our understanding of lipid rafts as bioactive structures. In this review, we will cover the more recent findings about cholesterol, sphin-golipids and lipid rafts located in cellular and nuclear membranes in cancer. Collectively, the data provide insights on the role of lipid rafts as biomolecular targets in cancer with good perspectives for the development of innovative therapeutic strategies
Why not promote promotion for green consumption? The controversial role of Regulatory Focus
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to empirically test the effects of regulatory focus (RF) orientation (promotion/prevention) on decisions to purchase green products. The two experimental studies conducted aimed to test whether individuals in a prevention (promotion) state were more (or less) inclined to buy green products.
Design/methodology/approach
To test the effect of RF on green and non-green consumption, the authors carried out two experimental studies (one considering a service
car sharing the other a physical product a laundry detergent). The studies are 2 (RF: prevention vs promotion) 2 (product type: green vs non-green) between factorial design involving 196 and 92 participants, respectively.
Findings
Promotion-focus has a powerful influence on green consumption. In both studies, individuals with a promotion focus seemed to be more inclined to buy green products as opposed to individuals in a prevention state.
Research limitations/implications
The main limitations of this study first relate to the results of the two experiments. Even though both studies showed that promotion-focused rather than prevention-focused individuals are more inclined to buy green products, the differences between the two orientations in green
condition are not statistically significant. As a result, the studies cannot determine whether to reject or accept the two main hypothesis.
Social implications
This paper provides some preliminary indications that could be useful to encourage consumers to adopt “green” styles of consumption. Focusing on an individual’s RF is a useful strategy to induce them to change their consumption choices abruptly. Relying more on a “promotion” rather than a “prevention” focus, individuals would be compelled to take immediate responsible behavior.
Originality/value
This paper aims to fill the gap on the role of RF in green consumption. Contrary to the accepted idea that a prevention state is more compatible with consumer ethics than promotion state, the studies showed the controversial role assumed by a prevention state in green consumption
Being green: from attitude to actual consumption
Interest in issues associated with environmental sustainability is continuously growing and sustainable consumption is now a mainstream topic at the top of the international public administration agenda. However, the many studies about the general inconsistency between green consumer attitudes and green consumption have not considered two individual differences that seem to be interesting in order to explain the ethical consumer attitude–intention gap: regulatory focus and time horizon. Regulatory focus, being the strategic orientation individuals use to pursue their goals, might enhance consumers’ sense of duty towards environmental issues. Time horizon represents the consumers’ perceived time lag between their decision and its outcome, and can induce them to immediately engage in a specific behaviour. With this goal in mind, the present work illustrates the results of three experimental studies that focus on individual differences (regulatory focus and time horizon) that might influence consumers to comply with green consumption. Results show that prevention-focused individuals demonstrate a higher compliance with green behaviour, both in the short-term and in the long-term outcome horizons
Time Horizon and Green Consumption
This study investigates the effect of time horizon in patterns of green consumption. Previous studies have shown that consumer behavior is influenced by an individual’s willingness to delay or expedite receiving gains and losses (i.e., take a time horizon orientation). This paper describes the effect of short-term or long-term conditions in complying with green and non-green consumption. The paper also reports the results of an experimental study showing that time horizon plays an important role in driving consumer behavior, especially when green consumption is expected
Striving to Promote Green Consumption: the Impact of Regulatory Focus and Time Horizon
Increasing attention is devoted, nowadays, to environmental and sustainable issues that seriously threaten
human life (Bandura, 2007; Fitzsimmons 2008). Many
scholars (Tanner and Kast 2003) agree that it is important to attract consumers’ attention on these problems
and induce them to adapt their behaviors and life style
accordingly. However, consumers seem not to be fully
conscious of the urgency of adopting a set of different
behaviors (Kronrod 2012). It is necessary, though, to
stress the need and the importance of their actions and
to induce them to act immediately without procrastinating their decisions. With this goal in mind, the present
work illustrates the results of 3 experimental studies that focus on individual differences that might influence consumers to comply with green consumption: regulatory
focus and time horizon. The former, being the strategic
orientation individuals use to pursue their goals, might
enhance the sense of duty that consumers experience
towards environmental issues. The latter represents the
time a consumer believes will elapse before he can experience the outcomes caused by his eventual choice
(Wright et al 1977), can induce consumers to immediately engage into a behavior. Results show that prevention
focused individuals show higher compliance with green
behaviors both in the short term and in the long term
outcome horizon. Hence, the belief is that the present
study aims to provide further insights about green behavior approach and some useful implications on how
to promote green consumption that companies may use
in their advertising campaigns
Inclusive political community: the challenge of liberal polities
The argument this Chapter develops is twofold. If they wish to comply with the requirements imposed by the ideal of democracy, modern liberal polities have to reconsider the popular basis upon which they are based. International mobility and a growing number of immigrants settling on their land call for a widening of the population entitled to take part in the democratic process. Should they fail to do so, their qualification as democracies may well be in peril. Western democracies have shown endeavours in this direction but they tend to confuse the logic of state with the logic of nation, the former being applied for the admission in their territory, the latter being at the core of the concept of citizenship. Such confusion casts doubts on the ability of modern democracies to respect individual liberties
