This study is aimed at examining a corpus composed of 76 addresses delivered by the last 16 Presidents of the Confederation of Italian Industries (Confindustria) in the period 1945-2012. The study raises questions that can be answered thanks to the statistical methods implemented in the text analysis framework and other procedures which may be used to identify the characteristics of texts (and their authors) and compare texts (and subcorpora). The study discusses strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the approach and highlights its connections to qualitative approaches
The hidden key. A content analysis to evidence the incommensurable differences in end-of-life decisions between Laic and Catholic bioethics. Analysis of the paradigmatic Italian situation.
Objectives: We consider the End-Of-Life (EOL) management between Laic bioethics (LB) and/or religious
[Catholic] bioethics (CB) showing their irreducible differences to underline the impossibility to mediate their
principles. Mediation attempts may be used to maintain the supremacy of religious position. To better understand the
difficulties in EOL decisions deriving from negation of such differences, we highlight the problem of “ambiguity”,
which is considered as a form of contradiction affirming/denying the same sense. The term “irreducible”
corresponds to the logic perspective of “tertium non datur”. Texts And Main Outcome Measures: Using this new
methodology in the analysis of bioethical problems, we underline the entity of the contraposition. We surveyed the
logical structure of the LB and CB principles through quantitative computerized analysis of content on texts that are particularly significant in the two different areas: Catholic vs. Laic positions. Results: The adopted analysis shows
what concepts are irreducible in the LB / CB arguments. The method of arguing (deductive in CB vs. inductive in LB
texts) is the mainstay of all differences: theonomy vs. automony. The textual analysis confirms our hypothesis,
showing the presence of two “irreducible” meaning in the representation of freedom in EOL decisions
Evaluation: Language, History and Geography
To assess the impact of the evaluation activities in Italian Universities and understand to what extent such institutions succeed in learning from their evaluation practices, this study exploited the annual Reports drafted by Evaluation Teams (Nuclei di Valutazione) and guidelines provided by the universities in their Charters (Statuti). The official documents of 33 Italian universities were collected in a large corpus including 57 Reports and 66 Charters with reference to two periods (pre/post D.M. 270/2004 for Reports and pre/post L. 240/2010 for Charters).
Despite a general monotonous character of these texts and a forseeable similarity between documents drafted by the same institution, the analyses of textual data shed light on spatial variability (i.e., northern vs. southern universities), often stronger than time effects. Moreover, location showed interesting interactions with other variables, such as dimension (number of students) and complexity (number of faculties and courses).
Results highlighted some universities that do not perform the evaluative commitment with the desirable belief but also a slow learning-process of a new awareness in evaluation subjects that is surprisingly well visible in the lexicon of these documents

Moved deeply I am. Autistic language in texts produced with FC
Using texts produced through Facilitated Communication (FC), this work is aimed at identifying the characteristic
features of the language used by autistic subjects and understanding when these distinctive elements may
distinguish it from the language of facilitators. Preliminary results shows that autistic subjects actually use a
special style of writing; this finding supports the hypothesis that texts are the fruit of individual production of
autistic subjects, not inevitably influenced by facilitators. This first work, based on a restricted sample which is
not necessarily representative, is important because it has permitted to better specify criteria by which subjects,
texts, analyses to carry out and software to be employed will be chosen in future studies. Such a protocol may be
later applied to a broader interdisciplinary project involving linguistics, statistics, computer science, pedagogy,
neurology, psychology, social sciences and ethical-philosophy. This new project, named “EASIEST” (Autistic
Expression: Interdisciplinary Study with Statistic-Textual data processing) is based on the idea that in the specific
case of autism, each form of communication represents a resource to be evaluated even if this seems atypical
and controversial

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
