Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Digital breast tomosynthesis: A state of the art review
Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) is an X-ray mammography technique where multiple low-dose projection images of the breast are reconstructed in multiple tomographic images creating a semi-3D mammogram. This enables the visualization of a sequential set of thin sections of the breast, overcoming the masking effect of overlying fibroglandular breast tissue, then improving carcinoma detection and reducing false-positive cases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Applicazione delle metodiche di segmentazione 3D su immagini TAC all’analisi morfologica e metrica dei seni frontali per scopi chirurgici
OBIETTIVO: La variabilità di forme e dimensioni costituisce una proprietà fondamentale dei seni frontali e ha un enorme rilievo in diversi ambiti chirurgici, soprattutto in endoscopia. La diffusione delle metodiche di segmentazione di immagini TC può fornire un fondamentale approccio per lo studio dettagliato della morfologia di queste strutture attraverso la loro visualizzazione tridimensionale. Lo scopo di questo studio è la valutazione della forma e del volume dei seni frontali tramite analisi dei rispettivi modelli tridimensionali segmentati da esami TC.
METODI: Venti soggetti (10 maschi e 10 femmine) sottoposti a scansione TC del capo sono stati selezionati da un database ospedaliero. I seni frontali di destra e di sinistra appartenenti allo stesso paziente sono stati segmentati tramite programma ITK-SNAP e i modelli ottenuti sono stati automaticamente sovrapposti su quelli degli altri soggetti in base alla minore distanza punto-su-punto fra le due superfici, per un totale di 110 sovrapposizioni (equamente suddivise fra maschi e femmine). È stato calcolato il volume del seno frontale di destra e di sinistra di ogni soggetto. I valori RMS (root mean square) delle distanze punto-su-punto e i volumi calcolati sono stati confrontati tramite test ANOVA a due vie per valutare l’eventuale influenza di sesso e lato (P<0.05).
RISULTATI: Nel caso dei maschi, il valore medio di RMS era pari a 2,64±1,19 mm a destra, 2,52±1,43 mm a sinistra, nelle femmine 2.25±1.27 mm a destra, 2,55±1,54 mm a sinistra. Il volume medio del seno frontale destro e sinistro è risultato pari a 3,016±2,101 cm3 e 3,963±1,952 cm3, rispettivamente, mentre nelle donne gli stessi valori erano pari a 2,954±1,108 cm3 e 3,622±2,266 cm3. Né per i valori di RMS né per i volumi sono state evidenziate differenze statisticamente significative rispetto a sesso o lato (P>0,05).
CONCLUSIONI: Lo studio ha descritto uno strumento per la valutazione morfologica e quantitativa dei seni frontali in ambito chirurgico.BACKGROUND: The variability of shapes and sizes constitutes a fundamental property of the frontal sinuses and
has an enormous importance in different surgical fields, especially in endoscopy. The diffusion of the methods of
segmentation from CT images can provide a fundamental approach for the detailed study of the morphology of
these structures through their three-dimensional visualization. The aim of this study is to evaluate the shape and volume
of the frontal sinuses by analyzing the respective three-dimensional models segmented by CT examinations.
METHODS: Twenty subjects (10 males and 10 females) undergoing CT scan of the head were selected from a
hospital database. The right and left frontal sinuses belonging to the same patient were segmented by ITK-SNAP
program and the obtained models were automatically overlapped on those of the other subjects based on the smaller
point-on-point distance between the two surfaces, for a total of 110 overlays (equally divided between males
and females). The volume of the right and left frontal sinus of each subject was calculated. The root mean square
(RMS) values of the point-to-point distances and the calculated volumes were compared by two-way ANOVA tests
to evaluate the possible influence of sex and side (P<0,05).
RESULTS: In male subjects, the mean RMS value was 2,64±1,19 mm on the right, 2,52±1,43 mm on the left,
females 2,25±1,27 mm on the right, 2,55±1,54 mm on the left. The mean volume of the right and left frontal sinus
was equal to 3,016±2,101 cm3 and 3,963±1,952 cm3, respectively, while in women the same values were equal to
2,954±1,108 cm3 and 3,622±2,266 cm3. Neither the RMS values nor the volumes showed statistically significant
differences with respect to sex or side (P>0,05).
CONCLUSIONS: This study describes a means of morphological and quantitative assessment of the frontal sinuses
in the surgical field
