    [Transfusion-associated LAV/HTLV-III infections in Switzerland. Report of 2 cases]

    Two patients developed signs of LAV/HTLV-III infection one and two years respectively after a blood transfusion. The leading symptom in one patient was generalized lymphadenopathy, while the other patient presented with Candida stomatitis. In both cases, blood transfusions administered in 1983 were found to be the only possible source of infection; one blood donor of each patient was anti-LAV/HTLV-III positive. Family members and sexual partners of the two were negative for antibodies against LAV/HTLV-III. Our findings document the first two cases of LAV/HTLV-III associated disease most probably related to blood transfusions in Switzerland

    Supporting Agricultural Extension: Could Farmers Contribute?

    Is extension an effective tool for increasing social welfare? The objective of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of farmer financial participation in extension as an alternative to increase its efficiency. While extension costs have been high, the impact at farmers' welfare has not yielded the expected results. Rice production in Nigeria and Benin is used as a study case. Rice is an important food crop and cash crops and both countries have conditions to produce it locally. Two concepts are used to evaluate private participation: farmers' capability to pay (CTP) and requirement to pay (RTP) for extension. Farmers' capability to pay is evaluated from the expected increase benefit due to extension work. Requirement to pay is deducted from extension costs. Results show that rice farmers could initially contribute with 25% of the extension costs in Nigeria and 10% in Benin. While financial participation from farmers is a possibility, the role of the government is still needed to guarantee social welfare.Teaching/Communication/Extension/Profession, Q16, O3,

    A Xenopus laevis creatine kinase isozyme (CK-III/III) expressed preferentially in larval striated muscle: cDNA sequence, developmental expression and subcellular immunolocalization

    A cDNA containing the nearly complete coding sequence of CK-III subunit of X. laevis was isolated, sequenced and further identified by comparing the tissue distribution of CK-III/III isozyme with that of its messenger. Comparison of CK-III deduced amino acid sequence with other CK sequences published reveals its close homology to M-CK subunits. Results using both cDNA probes and monoclonal antibodies specific for CK-III subunits indicate that the appearance and the accumulation of CK-III occur in parallel with myoblast differentiation. Moreover, subcellular immuno-histolocalization shows that CK-III/III isozyme is especially concentrated on larval myofibres at the level of A-band

    Anthropometric and training variables related to half-marathon running performance in recreational female runners

    The relationship between skin-fold thickness and running has been investigated in distances ranging from 100 m to the marathon distance (42.195 km), with the exclusion of the half-marathon distance (21.0975 km). We investigated the association between anthropometric variables, prerace experience, and training variables with race time in 42 recreational, nonprofessional, female half-marathon runners using bi- and multivariate analysis. Body weight (r, 0.60); body mass index (r, 0.48); body fat percentage (r, 0.56); pectoral (r, 0.61), mid-axilla (r, 0.69), triceps (r, 0.49), subscapular (r, 0.61), abdominal (r, 0.59), suprailiac (r, 0.55), and medial calf (r, 0.53) skin-fold thickness; mean speed of the training sessions (r, -0.68); and personal best time in a half-marathon (r, 0.69) correlated with race time after bivariate analysis. Body weight (P = 0.0054), pectoral skin-fold thickness (P = 0.0068), and mean speed of the training sessions (P = 0.0041) remained significant after multivariate analysis. Mean running speed during training was related to mid-axilla (r, -0.31), subscapular (r, -0.38), abdominal (r, -0.44), and suprailiac (r, -0.41) skin-fold thickness, the sum of 8 skin-fold thicknesses (r, -0.36); and percent body fat (r, -0.31). It was determined that variables of both anthropometry and training were related to half-marathon race time, and that skin-fold thicknesses were associated with running speed during training. For practical applications, high running speed during training (as opposed to extensive training) may both reduce upper-body skin-fold thicknesses and improve race performance in recreational female half-marathon runners
