Glacial history of the Kuznetsky Alatay Mountains
Field investigations showed that the leeward slopes across the Kuznetsky Alatay Mountains (also the windward slopes in the Tigertysh ridge) are intensively eroded by glaciers and represent the classical type of “alpine-type landscape”. Accumulative glacial landforms are developed in all types of glacial valleys. Study of five valleys (the Karatas, the Lower and the Upper Tayzhasu, Perekhodnya, the right source of the Small Kazyr Rivers) showed that four stadial moraine complexes can be identified. These moraines are very different by their morphology. They indicate the change of glaciation from large ancient valley glaciers to modern small cirque and slope glaciers. In this article, the first data are assessed about evolution of glaciers and climate in the Kuznetsky Alatay Mountains from the Last Glacial Maximum of Late Pleistocene (between 26,500 and 19,000–20,000 years BP) to nowadays on the basis of studies of glacial landforms, sedimentology, and biostratigraphy. In the Glacier inventory complied in 1970s-early 1980s, 91 glaciers were recorded in the Kuznetsky Alatay; however, some were erroneously identified as glaciers. The review of the current changes of modern glaciation of the Kuznetsky Alatay is made on the basis of repeated photographs and direct field measurements of 30 glaciers. 18 out of the 30 studied glaciers melted away completely, their area decreased from 1.4 to 0.5–0.3 km2. Not all glaciers strongly degraded. Large cirque glaciers have not changed significantly. Over the past 110 years, the area of perennial snowfields in the Kuznetsky Alatay Mountains had reduced by 90 %. Over the century, the timberline has risen by about 50 m and is currently located at 1220–1200 m a.s.l

Internal pressure measurements in microchannels of different shapes
This paper was presented at the 3rd Micro and Nano Flows Conference (MNF2011), which was held at the Makedonia Palace Hotel, Thessaloniki in Greece. The conference was organised by Brunel University and supported by the Italian Union of Thermofluiddynamics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Thessaly, IPEM, the Process Intensification Network, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Heat Transfer Society, HEXAG - the Heat Exchange Action Group, and the Energy Institute. This paper presents the experimental results of determining friction factors for two microchannels with circular cross-sections: rectilinear and curvilinear. The inner diameter of the channels is 68.9 and 70.3 μm. The Reynolds numbers ranged from 320 to 3215. Pressure measurements are carried out simultaneously in 16 locations along the straight microchannel and in 12 locations for the curved microchannel. The friction factor for the straight microchannel is in good agreement with the theoretical value for the round smooth tubes. For the curved microchannel, the friction factor value of the curved section is less than the reference value for smoothly curved tubes. The Reynolds number for the laminar-turbulent transition in a straight microchannel is 2300–2600. In the curved microchannel the transition is not observed. The length of the developing region was identified, and the inlet minor loss coefficient is calculated. This work was supported by the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (integration project of SB RAS no. 110)
Bariatric Surgery to Target Obesity in the Renal Transplant Population: Preliminary Experience in a Single Center
During the last century, obesity has become a global epidemic. The effect of obesity on renal transplantation may occur in perioperative complications and impairment of organ function. Obese patients have metabolic derangements that can be exacerbated after transplantation and obesity directly impacts most transplantation outcomes. These recipients are more likely to develop adverse graft events, such as delayed graft function and early graft loss. Furthermore, obesity is synergic to some immunosuppressive agents in triggering diabetes and hypertension. As behavioral weight loss programs show disappointing results in these patients, bariatric surgery has been considered as a means to achieve rapid and long-term weight loss. Up-to-date literature shows laparoscopic bariatric surgery is feasible and safe in transplantation candidates and increases the rate of transplantation eligibility in obese patients with end-stage organ disease. There is no evidence that restrictive procedures modify the absorption of immunosuppressive medications. From 2013 to 2016 we performed six bariatric procedures (sleeve gastrectomy) on obese patients with renal transplantation; mean preoperative body mass index (BMI) was 39.8 kg/m2. No postoperative complication was observed and no change in the immunosuppressive medications regimen was needed. Mean observed estimated weight loss was 27.6%, 44.1%, 74.2%, and 75.9% at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months follow-up, respectively. Our recommendation is to consider patients with BMI >30 kg/m2 as temporarily ineligible for transplantation and as candidates to bariatric surgery if BMI >35 kg/m2. We consider laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy as a feasible, first-choice procedure in this specific population
