Summary The proposed approach aims to estimate the flood extent and soil wetness using AMSR-E passive microwave data. The approach is applied over the Peace Athabasca Delta at the Mackenzie River Basin, which is situated in northwestern Canada. The methodology is based on the Polarization Ratio index (PR), which is computed using AMSR-E 37 GHz, vertically and horizontally polarized brightness temperature values. The Water Surface Fraction (WSF), which represents the fraction of flooded soil, was derived on a pixel-per-pixel basis. The fractional vegetation cover was added to the WSF calculation in order to take into account the temporal variation of the vegetation shading effect. The WSF derived from AMSR-E data, WSF(AMSR-E), was compared to that derived from the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Terra instrument (MODIS-Terra) images (250 m), WSF(MODIS). A rating curve relationship was developed between the observed discharge and WSF(MODIS). It was noted that the WSF obtained from AMSR-E images systematically exceed those from MODIS, as they are formed from a combination of different contributions, including open water surface, flooded area and wetlands, which are abundant in the northern climates. Therefore, a wetness index was defined based on the difference between passive microwave and visible image responses. This index was able to qualitatively describe the temporal evolution of the wetness over a part of the Mackenzie River Basin. The availability of discharge observations and passive microwave data leads to the definition of a consistent wetness index and soil moisture monitoring over the region of the Mackenzie River Basin. The extrapolation of the developed algorithm to the entire Mackenzie River Basin should consider the dependency of the rating curve relationship on the site features. A satisfactory agreement was noted between the wetness index, the precipitation, and the temperature values. The wetness index agrees well with the measured soil moisture.

A multi-temporal analysis of AMSR-E data for flood and discharge monitoring during the 2008 flood in Iowa
The objective of this work is to demonstrate the potential of using passive microwave data to monitor flood and discharge
conditions and to infer watershed hydraulic and hydrologic parameters. The case study is the major flood in Iowa in summer
2008. A new Polarisation Ratio Variation Index (PRVI) was developed based on a multi-temporal analysis of 37 GHz satellite
imagery from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) to calculate and detect anomalies in soil moisture
and/or inundated areas. The Robust Satellite Technique (RST) which is a change detection approach based on the analysis of
historical satellite records was adopted. A rating curve has been developed to assess the relationship between PRVI values
and discharge observations downstream. A time-lag term has been introduced and adjusted to account for the changing delay
between PRVI and streamflow. Moreover, the Kalman filter has been used to update the rating curve parameters in near real
time. The temporal variability of the b exponent in the rating curve formula shows that it converges toward a constant value.
A consistent 21-day time lag, very close to an estimate of the time of concentration, was obtained. The agreement between
observed discharge downstream and estimated discharge with and without parameters adjustment was 65 and 95%, respectively.
This demonstrates the interesting role that passive microwave can play in monitoring flooding and wetness conditions and
estimating key hydrologic parameters
A global passive microwave based wetness index for the monitoring of soil moisture and inundation
The objective of study is to implement an automated
microwave based index to detect and monitor extreme soil
wetness and flooding conditions on global scale. The
proposed index is based on the Polarization Ratio (PR) that
is determined from brightness temperature measures from
the AMSR-E sensor. The Robust Satellite Technique (RST)
is then applied to the PR to determine a Polarization Ratio
Variational Index (PRVI) which is sensitive to extreme
hydrological conditions in term of wetness but also drought
conditions. The PRVI was determined at different
frequencies ranging from the 37 GHz to the 6.9 GHz. The
index was tested during extreme flooding events in Asia and
Europe as well as in Northern America. The index was
implemented globally using observation from passive
microwave instruments. The analysis of the results on global
scale shows that the index was sensitive to extreme
hydrological event and that false alarms were mostly issued
over northern snow covered regions only. This implies that
the proposed index can be used to assess and delineate
flooding conditions
Monitoring of soil moisture using a microwave based variational wetness index
Satellite data have been largely used to detect and monitor flooding events. In particular, data acquired by passive radiometers were recognized as the most adequate to this aim, thanks to their suitable trade-off between temporal and spatial resolution. In this work, nine years of data acquired by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) aboard Earth Observing System (EOS) Aqua, have been investigated by means of the Robust Satellite Techniques (RST) approach, implementing a robust indicator of soil moisture variation, the Polarization Ratio Variation Index (PRVI). Such an index has been applied to analyze the flood which hit Pakistan during summer 2010. Preliminary results shown in this study demonstrated the potential of such an index in providing reliable information about the presence of extremely wet soils, especially when low frequency AMSR-E channels are used

Architecture and The Built EnvironmentArchitectureExplore La
