CHO microRNA engineering is growing up : recent successes and future challenges
No full textmicroRNAs with their ability to regulate complex pathways that control cellular behavior and phenotype have been proposed as potential targets for cell engineering in the context of optimization of biopharmaceutical production cell lines, specifically of Chinese Hamster Ovary cells. However, until recently, research was limited by a lack of genomic sequence information on this industrially important cell line. With the publication of the genomic sequence and other relevant data sets for CHO cells since 2011, the doors have been opened for an improved understanding of CHO cell physiology and for the development of the necessary tools for novel engineering strategies. In the present review we discuss both knowledge on the regulatory mechanisms of microRNAs obtained from other biological models and proof of concepts already performed on CHO cells, thus providing an outlook of potential applications of microRNA engineering in production cell lines
Unimodality of Betti numbers for Hamiltonian circle actions with index-increasing moment Maps
No full textThe unimodality conjecture posed by Tolman in [L. Jeffrey, T. Holm, Y. Karshon, E. Lerman and E. Meinrenken, Moment maps in various geometries, http://www.birs.ca/workshops/2005/05w5072/report05w5072.pdf] states that if (M,ω) is a 2n-dimensional smooth compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian circle action with only isolated fixed points, then the sequence of Betti numbers {b0(M),b2(M),...,b2n(M)} is unimodal, i.e. bi(M) ≤ bi+2(M) for every i < n. Recently, the author and Kim [Y. Cho and M. Kim, Unimodality of the Betti numbers for Hamiltonian circle action with isolated fixed points, Math. Res. Lett. 21(4) (2014) 691-696] proved that the unimodality holds in eight-dimensional case by using equivariant cohomology theory. In this paper, we generalize the idea in [Y. Cho and M. Kim, Unimodality of the Betti numbers for Hamiltonian circle action with isolated fixed points, Math. Res. Lett. 21(4) (2014) 691-696] to an arbitrary dimensional case. We prove the conjecture in arbitrary dimension under the assumption that the moment map H : M → R is index-increasing, which means that ind(p) < ind(q) implies H(p) < H(q) for every pair of critical points p and q of H, where ind(p) is the Morse index of p with respect to H. © World Scientific Publishing Company1111sciescopu

Assessing User Attitudes Toward Mobile Commerce In The U.S. Vs. Korea: Implications For M-Commerce CRM
No full textMobile Commerce (m-commerce) relies on “customer or user interactions” via a mobile device and telecommunications infrastructure for the purpose of interacting, advertising, promoting, and selling products and services. The author of this study explored user attitudes and behavior toward m-commerce in the U.S. vs. Korea. In this paper, the author investigated comparison analysis for the U.S. vs. Korea for the following issues: 1) the factors affecting user attitudes toward mobile phone business; 2) how those factors affect perceived ease of use (EOU) and usefulness (U); 3) the effects of perceived ease of use (EOU) and usefulness (U) on overall attitudes toward the mobile phone business; and 4) how overall attitudes toward mobile phone business affect user/customer satisfaction. Surveys were conducted in two countries and the results reveal the different aspects affecting mobile phone usage in the U.S. vs. Korea. This study also found that user attitudes toward the mobile phone business significantly impact the level of m-satisfaction. Furthermore, this study provides managerial implications and offers suggestions to m-businesses.1
The antihypertensive effects of the Jamaican Cho-Cho (Sechium edule)
No full textThe experiments reported in this study constitute a preliminary investigation into the possible hypotensive effect of the Jamaican Cho-Cho (Sechium edule). Experiments were conducted in a random and blind fashion on two sub species of Sechium edule. Both the pulp and the peel were examined for hypotensive activity. Water-soluble extracts were prepared from these components of the fruit and injected into anaesthetised rats. Various cardiovascular parameters were measured including heart rate, mean arterial pressure (MAP) and several ECG intervals. We report that all extracts tested produced a fall in blood pressure with little change in ECG intervals. Extract B produced the least change in heart rate with a fall in MAP of approximately 23 mmHg. Changes in heart rate with all extracts appeared to be minimal as an ED25 value could only be determined for extract A, and ED10 values could not be evaluated for extracts C and D. The mechanism(s) by which these extracts produce their hypotensive effects could not be determined in these preliminary experiments. However, it appears not to involve direct effects on cardiac tissue. This conclusion is based on the finding that it took a minimum of 10 to 15 seconds for the hypotensive action to manifest post bolus. No full textIn a healthcare environment, it is essential to manage the emergency room process since its connectivity to the quality of care. In managing clinical operations, quantitative process performance analysis is typically performed with process mining, and there have been several approaches to utilize process mining in emergency room process analysis. These research provide a comprehensive methodology to analyze the emergency room processes using process mining; however, performance indicators for directly assessing the emergency room processes are lacking. To overcome the limitation, this paper proposes a framework of process performance indicators utilized in emergency rooms. The proposed framework starts with the devil’s quadrangle, i.e., time, cost, quality, and flexibility. Based on four perspectives, we suggest specific process performance indicators with a formal explanation. To validate the applicability of this research, we present a case study result with the real-life clinical data collected from a tertiary hospital in Korea.1
