The Re-identification Challenge
For making sense of the vast quantity of visual data generated by the
rapid expansion of large-scale distributed multi-camera systems, automated person re-identification is essential. However, it poses a significant challenge to computer vision systems. Fundamentally, person re-identification requires to solve two difficult problems of ‘finding needles in haystacks’ and ‘connecting the dots’ by identifying instances and associating the whereabouts of targeted people travelling across large distributed space–time locations in often crowded environments. This capability would enable the discovery of, and reasoning about, individual-specific long-term structured activities and behaviours.Whilst solving the person re-identification problem is inherently challenging, it also promises enormous potential for a wide range of practical applications, ranging from security and surveillance to retail and health care. As a result, the field has drawn growing and wide interest from academic researchers and industrial developers. This chapter introduces the re-identification problem, highlights the difficulties in building person re-identification systems, and presents an overview of recent progress and the state-of-the-art approaches to solving some of the fundamental challenges in person re-identification, benefiting from research in computer vision, pattern recognition and machine learning, and drawing insights from video analytics system design considerations for engineering practical solutions. It also provides an introduction to the contributing chapters of this book
HIV-1 gp120 induces the activation of both c-fos and c-jun immediate- early genes in HEL megakaryocytic cells
We have previously demonstrated that the addition in culture of recombinant HIV-1 IIIB envelope gp120 affects the survival/growth of pluripotent haemopoietic progenitors, and, in particular, of those committed towards the megakaryocytic lineage. To characterize some of the molecular mechanisms involved in this phenomenon, we investigated the expression of members of the activating protein-1 (AP-1) complex in the HEL megakaryoblastic cell line. Following the treatment of HEL cells with recombinant IIIB envelope gp120, we noticed: (i) increased levels of endogenous c-fos and c-jun mRNA and proteins, (ii) activation of both c-fos and c-jun promoters, and (iii) a very rapid stimulation of a MAPK/ERK pathway
NLO QCD+NLO EW corrections to diboson production matched to parton shower
We present the matching of NLO QCD and NLO EW corrections to parton showers for vector-boson pair production at the LHC. We consider leptonic final states, including resonant and non-resonant diagrams, spin correlations and off-shell effects. Our results are obtained interfacing the Recola2-Collier one-loop provider with the POWHEG-BOX-RES framework. We discuss our implementation, we validate it at fixed order, and we show our final results matched to parton shower. A by-product of our work is also a general interface between Recola2-Collier and POWHEG-BOX-RES. This is the first time that EW and QCD corrections to diboson production are consistently matched to parton showers
IlLEGAL USE OF GROWTII PROMOTING AGENTS AND ALTERATIONS IN BOVINE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
Introduction·
The P1-agonist clenbuterol is a drug that finds wide application in. veterinary medicine as
. bronchodilator and tocolytic agent. In recent years, ìt has been more and more utiIized as repartitioning agent to improve the performance of meat animals. In faci. clenbuterol long-term administration improves growth rate, reduce fat deposition and increase protein accretion in cattle, pigs and poultry. From this point of view, clenbuterol treatment should fulfil producers and consumers demands (1). Thus, in Italy, veal calves are reasonably suspected to be systematically treated with P-agonists in order to stimulate growth. Nevertheless, a field study carried out on

regularly slaughtered veal calves. revealed a ratber constant involvement of the female genital tract consisting in anatomical and histopathological changes associated with biochemicallesions (23). The alterations present in the female reproductive system of veal calve s, sequestrated by the Judicial Authority for illegal treatment with clenbuterol, were investigated. In the urine of six male belonging to the same herd, clenbuterol were found in not allowed amounts.
Materials and methods The histological investigations were performed on the uteri, ovaries and major vestibolar glands of 15 crossbred veal calves, 2-4 months old. Tissue samples were fIxed in buffered formalin (10%) and tben paraffIn-wax embedded sections were stained by routine methods (Haematoxilin-eosin, Van Gieson, Azan, Pas-reaction). Major vestibolar glands were processed using more specifIc techniques (Alcian-Pas pH 2.6 and Alcian pH 1). Just after slaughtering, tissue samples (about 1 g) were dissected from the vagina (A), the body (B), and the uterine horns (C) and then frozen at -80"C in order to assay cytosolic estrogen and progesterone receptor concentrations using a modified dextrancoated charcoal method (3). The results obtained by the Scatchard analysis, are expressed as femtomoles of specifIcally bound hormone per mg of protein (mean values±S.E.M.). The hormonal status, was evaluated on serom samples obtained from clotted blood drawn from the jugular vein of each animaI. Estradiol and progesterone serom level were measured using RIA techniques (Estradiol Double Antibodl and Progesterone Coat-A-CountO DPC Los Angeles, USA).

Diseussion The histological pictures, reveal a morphological and physiological status incompatible with the immature age of the animals. On the other hand, these findings suggest a condition of exogenous stimulation by growth-promoting or anabolic agents. Moreover, the high concentrations of estrogen and progesterone receptors at uterine level, when compared with normal values (4), also indicate an abnormal disposition of the receptorial status. It is well established that estrogenic treatments induce steroid receptors syntesis, but recently, clenbuterol treatment has been related with uterine estrogen and progesterone receptors increase in rat and pigs (5), without affecting or at least inhibiting hormonal serum levels.

Long-Term Techno-Economic Performance Monitoring to Promote Built Environment Decarbonisation and Digital Transformation—A Case Study
Buildings’ long-term techno-economic performance monitoring is critical for benchmarking in order to reduce costs and environmental impact while providing adequate services. Reliable building stock performance data provide a fundamental knowledge foundation for evidence-based energy efficiency interventions and decarbonisation strategies. Simply put, an adequate understanding of building performance is required to reduce energy consumption, as well as associated costs and emissions. In this framework, Variable-base degree-days-based methods have been widely used for weather normalisation of energy statistics and energy monitoring for Measurement and Verification (M & V) purposes. The base temperature used to calculate degree-days is determined by building thermal characteristics, operation strategies, and occupant behaviour, and thus varies from building to building. In this paper, we develop a variable-base degrees days regression model, typically used for energy monitoring and M & V, using a “proxy” variable, the cost of energy services. The study’s goal is to assess the applicability of this type of model as a screening tool to analyse the impact of efficiency measures, as well as to understand the evolution of performance over time, and we test it on nine public schools in the Northern Italian city of Seregno. While not as accurate as M & V techniques, this regression-based approach can be a low-cost tool for tracking performance over time using cost data typically available in digital format and can work reasonably well with limited resolution, such as monthly data. The modelling methodology is simple, scalable and can be automated further, contributing to long-term techno-economic performance monitoring of building stock in the context of incremental built environment digitalization
Multiple Re-C bonds at the [{MeC(CH2PPh2)3}Re(CO)2]+ auxiliary
After displacement of the η2-H2 ligand from [(triphos)Re(CO)2(η2-H2)]BF4 (2), ethyne and various 1-alkynes, HC≡CR, are tautomerized at the Re(I) center to vinylidene ligands (R = H, Ph, p-tolyl, COOEt, n-C6H13, SiMe3). A kinetic π-alkyne adduct is intercepted at low temperature during the reaction between 2 and ethyne. The primary vinylidene complex [(triphos)Re(CO)2(C=CH2)]BF4 (7-BF4) can also be obtained by reaction of the (trimethylsilyl)-vinylidene complex [(triphos)Re(CO)2{C=C(H)SiMe3}]BF4 with stoichiometric water. Unprecedented examples of addition of either water or alcohols to Re-vinylidene moieties to give hydroxycarbene or alkoxycarbene complexes are presented. In particular, an excess of water transforms 7-BF4 into the secondary hydroxycarbene complex [(triphos)Re(CO)2{C(OH)-CH3}]BF4 (11), which can be isolated in the solid state. Upon thermolysis in refluxing tetrahydrofuran, 11 selectively converts to the tricarbonyl complex [(triphos)Re(CO)3]BF4 and methane. Deprotonation of 11 by mild bases gives the acetyl derivative (triphos)Re(CO)2(COCH3), which regenerates the hydroxycarbene precursor by protonation with strong acids. The ethoxycarbene complexes [(triphos)Re(CO)2{C(OEt)CH2R}]BPh4 (R = H, COOEt) are prepared by nucleophilic addition of ethanol across the C=C double bond of the corresponding vinylidene derivatives. Neutral σ-alkynyl complexes of the general formula (triphos)Re(CO)2(C≡CR) (R = Ph, p-tolyl, COOEt, n-C6H13, H) are obtained by reaction of the vinylidene derivatives with strong bases. The reaction of the σ-alkynyl complexes with various methylating agents affords disubstituted vinylidene derivatives, herein exemplified by [(triphos)Re(CO)2{C=C(Me)Ph}](OSO2CF3). The structural identities in the solid state of the phenylvinylidene complex [(triphos)Re(CO)2{C=C(H)Ph}]BF4 and of the ethoxycarbene complex [(triphos)Re(CO)2{C(OEt)CH3}]BPh4 have been determined by X-ray diffraction analyses. In both complexes the metal center is octahedrally coordinated by a fac triphos ligand, by two mutually cis terminal carbonyls, and by the organyl ligand
