Returning culture to peacebuilding : contesting the liberal peace in Sierra Leone
This thesis investigates the advantages and limitations of applying culture to the analysis of violent conflict and peacebuilding, with a particular focus on liberal peacebuilding in Sierra Leone. While fully aware of the critique of the concept of culture in terms of its uses for the production of difference and ‘otherness,’ it also seeks to respond to the critique of liberal peacebuilding on the account of its low sensitivity towards local culture, which allegedly undermines the peace effort. After a careful examination of the terms of discussion about culture enabled by theoretical approaches to conflict in Chapter 2, the thesis presents a theoretical framework for the analysis of cultural aspects of conflict and peace based on the processes and effects of meaning-generation (Chapter 3), developing the conceptual apparatus and vocabulary for the subsequent empirical study. Instead of bracketing out the recursive nature of cultural theorising, the developed approach embraces the recursive dynamics which arise as a result of cultural ‘embeddedness’ of the analyst and the processes which s/he seeks to elucidate, mirroring similar dynamics in the cultural production of meaning and knowledge. The framework of ‘embedded cultural enquiry’ is then used to analyse the practices of liberal peacebuilding as a particular culture, which shapes the interaction of the liberal peace with its ‘subjects’ and critics as well as framing its reception of the cultural problematic generally (Chapter 4). The application of the analytical framework to the case study investigates the interaction between the liberal peace and ‘local culture,’ offering an alternative reading of the conflict and peace process in Sierra Leone (Chapter 5). The study concludes that a greater attention to cultural meaning-making offers a largely untapped potential for peacebuilding, although any decisions with regard to its deployment will inevitably be made from within an inherently biased cultural perspective
T-minima on convex sets and Mosco-convergence
Half century ago, Umberto Mosco was the ``relatore di tesi (tesi about the Mosco- convergence) di laurea'' of the first author; a quart of century ago, the first author was the ``relatore di tesi di laurea'' of the second author. The roots of this paper are the Mosco-convergence of convex sets and the minimization of integral functionals of the Calculus of Variations. We consider integral functionals of the type J(v)=∫Ω j(x,Dv)-∫Ω f(x)v(x). We study the existence of T-minima (infinite energy minima) on convex sets of the Sobolev space W01,p(Ω) and the stability of the T-minima under the Mosco-convergence of the convex sets
Parrasio allo Studium Urbis: la praefatio alle silvae di Stazio
In this article the author provides a critical edition, with commentary, of the praefatio
to Publius Papinius Statius’ silvae composed by the humanist Aulus Ianus Parrhasius.
The text, which is preserved in ms. V D 15 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III,
Naples, dates from the period of Parrhasius’s second stay in Rome (1514-1518). It provides
information about the scholars connected with Pomponius Letus and illuminates
both Statius’ reception in the Renaissance and teaching practices in the first half of the
16th century
La dea e la Bilancia. Elementi di datazione per la Ciris pseudovirgiliana
The paper deals with the complex problem of the datation of the Ciris attributed to Virgil.
After a short presentation of the text, the analysis focuses on the astronomical similitude at the
end of the poem (vv. 533-537), followed by the struggle between the ciris and the sea-eagle (vv.
538-541=Verg. georg. 1.406-409). A circumstantial reading of the similitude in its astronomical
details gives important clues for dating the poem. The author, in fact, does not speak only of the
apparent sunset of Scorpion and Orion constellations, but he also mentions at v. 534 a double
constellation (duplici... sidere), that is the constellation of Scorpion and of Libra. This
constellation was ‘created’ at Rome in the first century AD, as the astronomical and literary
sources clearly show. The connection established between the Libra and the horoscope of
Augustus made the constellation the seat of Princeps’ catasterism, as already alluded by Virgil
(Georg. I 32-35) and showed by a series of literary and iconographic sources. The author of the
Ciris clearly knows this tradition: we can therefore assume as terminus post quem for his poem
the 31 BC (the same as for the prologue of Georgics). In addition to that, the analysis of verses
87-88 may offer a further clue. The adjective Palaepahia indicates precisely ‘ancient Paphos’:
perhaps we have here another encomiastic allusion, since Augustus restored Aphrodite’s temple
after the earthquake of 15 BC. As a result, we could not assign in any case the Ciris to the young

Maternal caesarean section infection (MACSI) in Sierra Leone: a case-control study
Sierra Leone is the country with highest maternal mortality and infections are the underlying cause in 11% of maternal deaths, but the real burden remains unknown. This study aims to determine the incidence and risk factors of surgical site infection (SSI) post-caesarean section (CS) in women admitted to Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) in Freetown, Sierra Leone. A prospective case-control (1:3 ratio) study was implemented from 1 May 2018 to 30 April 2019 and 11 women presenting with suspected or confirmed infection post-CS were screened for inclusion as a case. For each case, three patients undergoing CS on the same day and admitted to the same ward, but not presenting with SSI, were selected as controls. The post-CS infection rate was 10.9%. Two hundred and fifty-four clinically confirmed cases were enrolled and matched with 762 control patients. By multivariable analysis, the risk factors for SSI were: being single (odds ratio (OR) 1.48, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.36-1.66), low education level (OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.55-1.84), previous CS (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.10-1.52), presenting with premature membranes rupture (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.18-1.88), a long decision-incision time (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.74-2.24) and a high missing post-CS antibiotic doses rate (OR 2.52, 95% CI 2.10-2.85). The Film Music of Ennio Morricone and its Dramaturgical Role in Spaghetti Western Movies of Sergio Leone
This thesis focuses on the dramaturgy of the film music of Ennio Morricone in the Spaghetti Western movies directed by Sergio Leone, specifically A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West and Duck, You Sucker. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and a research part. The theoretical part deals with the life and work of Ennio Morricone and his relationship with Sergio Leone, and sets the definition of Spaghetti Western movies. The research part analyses and compares the individual movies in terms of the dramaturgical role of Morricone’s music. The theoretical part uses as its sources primarily printed biographies of Morricone, a television documentary and various internet sources. On the contrary, the research part is based more on the findings of the thesis author and his subjective interpretation of the dramaturgical intentions. The terminology of Ivo Bláha is used. The thesis is accompanied by sheet music as well as by audio and audiovisual materials
SÓLIDO LÍQUIDO LÍTICO: A river garden for Bogotá
A river garden punctuated by 9 pavilions along the River Arzobispo, in Teusaquillo - Bogotá. The design proposal involves 3 levels of intervention : - the urban/ecological scale for the re-naturalisation of the currently polluted river Arzobispo; - landscape design for the articulation of the river bed and the zoning of the garden; - architectural design for the creation of the pavilions and the infrastructure which allow the interaction with the re-naturalised landscape. The architecture of the river garden allows to reconstruct, along with the physical archaeology of the place, through the exposure of raw and unapparent elements, also a human archaeology in the enclosed gardens of people's memory. The notion of "Sólido.Líquido.Lítico" derives exactly from the temporal dimension through which solid and liquid elements come into contact. The extended stratification of solid ground and the repeated shaping action of water produce the physical state of 'lithos', stone. Metaphorically, the lithic state can be considered as one of the physical states of this architecture, where the mass of the built encounters the ephemerality of time and use, giving birth to a state of reduction to its elemental state, a dissolvement to the essence and a permanence in the memory of the people who lived within it. Connection and memory triggers an effect of belonging. Through belonging, individual care enters into action and stimulates a collective behaviour of responsibility, which is likely to produce a change of attitude towards taking care of the river. This process of addressing at once the natural environment as well as the human environment can produce durable positive effects. First, the re-naturalisation of the river Arzobispo can be a model to be applied to many other watercourses in the wider area of Bogotá. Secondly, it allows to envision a public space which resonates with the history and culture of the Bogotan society and that is likely to be embraced as a positive platform for public life, outside of the dynamics of power, fear and violence.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science
A scoping review of retracted publications in anesthesiology
Context: Fraudulent publication is a scourge of scientific research. Objectives: This scoping review was aimed at characterizing retracted publications for fraud or plagiarism in the field of anesthesia. Does the reputation of the journal (Quartile and Impact Factor, IF) protect the reader from the risk of having the manuscript he read withdrawn for fraud/plagiarism? Methods/Design: This scoping review was planned following the Joanna Briggs Institute recommendations. Data sources: PubMed and the Retraction Watch Database (http://retractiondatabase.org/RetractionSearch.aspx?). Study selection: All types of publications retracted. Data extraction: Year, first author nationality, journal name, journal category, IF, Quartile, H index. Data analysis: The association with Quartile and IF was investigated. Results: No significant association between retraction of papers published in no-Quartile journals and retractions published in journals placed in the highest quartile. Conclusions: The quality of the surveillance in paper submission is not higher in journals of the first Quartile than in journals not placed in other Quartiles.
